Brown/Grizzly Bear Facts Building Fund Home Page Black Grizzly ... Search Taxonomy: While there has been much confusion about the taxonomy of brown bears ( Ursus arctos ), taxonomists agree there are at least two subspecies in North America the grizzly bear ( U. a. horribilis ) and the Kodiak bear ( U. a. middendorffi There is confusion about whether to consider others, like U. a. gyas and U. a. macfarlani , as separate subspecies. The Kodiak bear has lived separately on Kodiak, Afognak, and Shuyak Islands in southwestern Alaska for thousands of years with no interbreeding with other populations. However, there is no such geographic demarcation between the coastal U. a. gyas and the inland U. a. horribilis There is a continuum of difference between the larger coastal brown bears and the interior individuals that are generally called grizzly bears. Coastal brown bears have a greater amount of animal protein in their diet, achieve larger size, and have slight differences in coloration. At any point from the coast to the interior there is interbreeding between the populations (Jonkel 1987, p 456-473).

25. NWT Wildlife And Fisheries - Bear Attacks
Explains three methods of protecting yourself from aggressive black bears and grizzly bears.
http://www.nwtwildlife.rwed.gov.nt.ca/Publications/safetyinbearcountry/attacks.h
If a Bear Charges
A bear charges at high speed on all four legs. Many charges are bluffs. Bears often stop or veer to the side at the last minute. However, if contact appears unavoidable, you have three options: shoot to kill if you have a gun; play dead if you are attacked by a grizzly; or fight back if attacked by a black bear.
Shooting a Bear
The right moment to squeeze the trigger depends on your nerve, experience with a firearm, and how fast the bear is approaching. The decision can be made only by the person facing the bear, and must be made quickly. An accurate shot fired at close range has a greater chance of killing a bear than one fired from farther away. The first shot is the most important. If you must kill a bear, aim for the shoulder if the bear is broadside, or the back of the neck between the shoulders if the bear is facing you. Avoid head shots - they often do not kill a bear. Do not stop to check the results of your shot. Keep firing until the bear is still. Try to kill the bear cleanly and quickly - a wounded bear is very dangerous.
Playing Dead
Playing dead may prevent serious injury if you are attacked by a grizzly bear. Do not play dead during a black bear attack or if a grizzly bear is treating you as prey. Playing dead will help protect your vital areas, and the bear may leave if you appear harmless. There are two recommended positions:

Conservation strategy would dictate bear management following delisting.
By Rachel Odell, Jackson Hole News 3-21-00
Federal officials met in Jackson this week to discuss how to manage grizzly bears after they are removed from the endangered species list.
The meeting was one of several held throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The document to be reviewed, known as the conservation strategy, will establish guidelines to ensure the bears' permanent survival here. Federal officials released the plan earlier this month as part of a larger grizzly bear recovery plan. State and federal agencies must sign off on the recovery plan before the bear can be removed from the endangered species list, where its status is "threatened."
Document details
The draft strategy says that during six consecutive years there must be at least 15 female grizzlies with cubs within a 9,209-square-mile "primary conservation area," currently known as the recovery area. There is a 10-mile buffer zone outside of the PCA that totals 5,271 square miles that the plan says is also important grizzly habitat but that won't receive special protection.

- from Park County (Montana) Visitor's guide 2000
The beautiful Yellowstone landscape is also wild country - one of the last and largest undeveloped regions in the continental United States. Yellowstone Park lies at the heart of this wild land and is home to many black bears and grizzly bears that roam through the country side they claim for their own.
Both black and grizzly bears are frequently encountered in and around Yellowstone Park, and both species are unpredictable. Since it can be difficult to tell the two species apart, hikers are best advised to be wary of all bears.
As a rule, black bears are generally smaller, less aggressive animals and most have black or dark brown hair. However, some black bears grow to be quite large and it is not uncommon to see cinnamon-colored "black" bears that closely resemble a grizzly bear. Adult grizzlies, on the other hand, are quite large with lighter-colored hair that is usually highlighted by silver tips, giving the animal a distinctive sheen.
The only true distinction between the two species is their body shape, the shape of their muzzles and their claws. Grizzlies have a hump above their front shoulders, making it the highest point in their body. On black bears the highest point is the rump. In a profile, the grizzly's face has a distinctive brow that gives the bear a dish-shaped muzzle. The black bear has a straight muzzle and the face appears round when viewed from the front.

Hosted by KICS Bear Aware is a program of the British Columbia Conservation Foundation Bear Aware is an educational program designed to prevent and reduce conflicts between people and bears in our communities. While most of us enjoy beautiful BC's wildlife, we don't want bears in our backyards! Both people and bears would be better off if there were fewer bears in our towns. Because bears are simply animals seeking whatever food they can find, the onus is on us to prevent conflicts. If we all took more responsibility for our garbage, tree fruit and kitchen compost the bear "problem" would largely disappear, as it has in many jurisdictions. In the last decade, thousands of black bears and hundreds of grizzlies have been killed. Millions of tax dollars have been spent addressing the issue of bears that have become conditioned to feeding on food sources we provide. Relocating bears or killing them in unprecedented numbers has not reduced the problem.

Yellowstone grizzly bears may be delisted
November 20, 1998
Web posted at: 11:45 AM EST By Environmental News Network staff
(ENN) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is in the process of drafting a conservation strategy for the delisting of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone area and plans to have it ready for public comment by mid-December. The environmental community is on the offensive to ensure that the bears remain protected under the Endangered Species Act until they have improved habitat and are protected from all terrain vehicle use. Word of delisting the Yellowstone grizzly bears first surfaced last May when Wyoming Republican Senator Craig Thomas said he had gotten assurances from Fish and Wildlife Service Director Jamie Rappapport Clark that the agency would delist the bears within the next few years. According to environmentalists, although the Fish and Wildlife Service says the decision to delist is based on science, it appears that the agency is bending to political pressure from the oil and gas industry which wants to develop fields in the Bridger-Teton, Shoshone and Targhee National Forests.
