MINERAL RESOURCES

The importance of mineral deposits and their utilization is dependent upon their relative abundance and importance in commerce and industry. Deposits of rare or important industrial minerals require careful consideration before their availability is precluded by development. Mineral deposits that are common and readily available from nearby sources, for instance sand and gravel, pose less of supply threat if their mining locale is precluded. The nonrenewable character of mineral deposits requires their careful and efficient development to prevent unnecessary waste or exploitation. The excavation of mineral resources can also have significant environmental impacts that may only be marginally mitigated by surface mining, reclamation plans. Evidence of mining, particularly surface mining in desert areas, can remain for centuries if not properly reclaimed through extensive importing of fill, grading, and replanting. Locally Known Mineral Resources There are three types of deposits that can be found near Big Bear Lake: (1) stream deposits; (2) floodplain and terrace deposits; and (3) alluvial fans.

The main lakes, in order of the surface area located in Canada (many large lakes are traversed by the Canada-U.S. border), are Huron, Great Bear, Superior, Great Slave, Winnipeg, Erie and Ontario. The largest lake situated entirely in Canada is Great Bear Lake (31 328 km ) in the Northwest Territories. Great Slave is the deepest lake in Canada at 614 metres- 6 th deepest in the world. The highest major lake (over 100 square kilometres) in Canada is Chilko Lake, B.C. Its elevation is 1 171 metres and area is 158 square kilometres.

SYNOPSIS Power of Sign Surveys to Detect Bear Population Trends: Traditional studies entail intensive trapping with baiting, drugging, collaring, ear tagging, and frequent aerial radio tracking. Large numbers of grizzly bears are handled. Trapping requires closure of portions of the park to visitors. The presence of collared/marked bears and frequent overflights impinge on visitor wilderness and solitude experiences. Not only do these techniques disturb bears, but they are expensive to conduct and involve long-term (5-10+ years) commitments. Cost considerations, along with ethical and social concerns, prohibit their application to most grizzly bear populations. Ecological Applications (Kendall et al 1992) Using DNA to Monitor Grizzly Bear Population Trends: Recent advances in genetic technology allow identification of species, sex, and individuals from DNA extracted from bear hair and scats without handling bears. With proper survey design, identification of individuals and sex typing data can be used to determine (1) minimum population size, (2) population trends for both species, and (3) genetic diversity of the populations. Now that individual bears can be identified from hair and scats, sign surveys to monitor population trend will be more powerful than demonstrated by Kendall et al. (1992).
