Description:
Common name: American Black Bear
Scientific name: Ursus Americanus American Black Bears are only black in the east side of North America. In the west, they can be brown, beige, cinnamon, or even a blue-white color. Bears have curved claws used for climbing trees. Blacks Bears are 140 to 180 inches tall. They weigh 125 to 600 pounds. The bears eat plants, nuts, honey, rotting bodies, fish, and other small animals. They become mature for breeding at three to five years of age. In warm climates, breeding season is in May or June. In colder climates, breeding season is in July or August. The females breed every other year. The females can have one to four cubs per litter.
Environment:
American Black Bears generally live in large forests or big meadows. They live anywhere from the Arctic Circle to the Mexican border. They don't live only in places where a lot of forest destruction has taken place.
Problems:
There are a few reasons that American Black Bears are endangered. The main reason is because few cubs survive childhood. They sometimes starve, become sick, or are eaten by predators. Also, many of the few that survive are legally hunted.

Polar bears, the largest of all bear species worldwide, live only in the Arctic and are found only in areas where sea ice occurs for a significant portion of the year. Polar bears are classified as marine mammals and feed primarily on ringed seals ( Phoca hispida The 154 page Petition, which contains a review of the best available scientific information, as well a supplemental letter submitted today, cites global warming as the primary threat to polar bears, in addition to other threats such as oil and gas development in the Arctic, high levels of contaminants such as PCBs in polar bear tissues, and overhunting of some populations in Canada, Greenland, and Russia.

Current Status:
Habitat loss, fragmentation, or degradation within and surrounding grizzly bear ecosystems constitute the major threat to the grizzly bear. The cumulative impacts of timber harvest, recreation, oil and gas activity, and associated road construction alter habitat and increase the opportunities for human/grizzly encounters. Quality low elevation habitat, including essential spring range, is often located on private lands with high potential for conflicts.
Achievements:
Human-caused mortality of grizzly bears in the Yellowstone Grizzly Bear Ecosystem has decreased over the past decade due to interagency enforcement of sanitation regulations (e.g., closing of trash dumps), public education, habitat management, and nuisance bear control. The apparently stable population now numbers more than 200 in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. Responding to habitat management within the recovery zones, bears are reestablishing or increasing their use of habitat on Forest Service lands south of Yellowstone National Park. An estimate of several thousand section 7 consultations with Federal agencies have occurred since 1990, most of them informal and resulting in slight modifications to some projects. The following agencies and projects have been involved: Forest Service (road building, logging, access permits, recreation, powerline construction, mining, oil and gas leasing, range programs); National Park Service (road building and maintenance, facility construction and maintenance, visitor use); Bureau of Land Management (mining, timber sales, special use permits, recreation management, noxious weed and insect control, animal damage control, land exchanges); and Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (animal damage control).

Introduction
The Natural Resources DNA Profiling and Forensics Centre (NRDPFC) at Trent University currently conducts studies on Canadian and international animals considered to be at risk. This may include species designated as extirpated, endangered, threatened, or of special concern, and includes diverse animals such as frogs, wolves, bears, and whales. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Species in Canada (COSEWIC) is responsible for determining the national status of wild Canadian species. The Species at Risk program of the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) , which is responsible for federal wildlife issues, is currently proposing legislation (Bill C-5) that will protect species designated as "at risk" by COSEWIC. Bears Have Roared Back Since the 1970s By Juliet Eilperin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, May 30, 2004; Page A03 GARDINER, Mont. For 23 years, Chris Servheen has devoted himself to saving the grizzly bear from dying out in the American West. Now, he's ready to declare victory. Servheen, a hardy outdoorsman with a handlebar mustache and drawn features, is the coordinator of grizzly bear recovery for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. And he, with other federal officials, is making plans to take bears off the endangered species list, where they have been listed as threatened since 1975. By that year, the number of grizzlies in the lower 48 states had plummeted to between 200 and 250. As the bears were pressured by hunters and they lost their habitat to ranching and development, their numbers had dropped precipitously from the early 19th century, when as many as 50,000 roamed the West, ranging as far south as Mexico. Since they came under strict federal protection, the number of grizzlies in the lower 48 states has bounced back to between 1,200 and 1,400, along with 35,000 in Alaska, where the grizzly has never been listed as threatened. The largest concentration 550 to 600 is in Yellowstone National Park, with the remainder scattered across northern Montana, northern Idaho and northern Washington.
