Inland Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps Care in Captivity by Chris Jorden Introduction Bearded dragons are extremely popular at the moment, and are becoming even more increasingly so all the time. They have wonderful temperaments, and some even seem to enjoy being handled, the breed fairly easily and they display interesting social behaviour like courtship, threat and recognition. Bearded dragons grow to between 40 and 60 cm (16 - 24 inches) in length, although the males are usually bigger than females. Bearded dragons are a greyish brown in colour, although many colour types can be encountered, the prettier of these include lime phase, gold phase and sandfire red phase. Although these Australian lizards can be a great choice for beginners, their need for ultra-violet light, regular feeding and cleaning, and a very large vivarium can make them harder to keep than other smaller species such as leopard geckos and green anoles. Selecting A Bearded Dragon Before your decide to purchase one of these comical lizards, you must do a lot of research using books, web pages and by talking to experienced herpotologists or herpoculturists, and you must be sure you have the time and space for one of these quite demanding animals.

They have a good temperament and are easily tamed, enjoying time on your hand or shoulder. Bearded Dragons do show some recognition of owners and training. Their cost of upkeep is relatively low requiring inexpensive crickets and veggies as food. They are generally hardy not requiring many trips to the vet. A bearded dragons lifespan is an average of about 10 years. Essential Care Items: Aquarium Water Bowl Food Bowl Food Substrate Thermometer Decorations Under-tank heater Basking Lamp Full-Spectrum Lighting Vitamins/Calcium Powder Housing A water proof enclosure such as an aquarium or plastic terrarium work best. The minimum size of an aquarium should be about 40-50 gallons. Bearded dragons as adults, with a lifespan of around 10 years, can reach about 2 feet long and need ample room to move about their enclosure. Be sure to have an escape proof screen mesh for a cover on the aquarium. The bottom of the aquarium should be lined with a substrate consisting of sand or half sand and half bark. The sand should be about 2 inches deep. The substrate should be sifted through daily for potty material and completely changed as needed when dirty. Provide a water bowl for drinking, soaking and cooling off. You will need to change this daily if your lizard is an avid soaker. Shallow food bowls are necessary for holding food so your dragon does not ingest sand.

Small Dragon plus 75 Gallon tank
I have a very small dragon that is looking for a new home. She has a messed up leg from a fight when young so she has not grow big. Right now she is very skinny due to budget issues. She eats well and loves crickets. She is regular colorations nothing fancy. She is not hadled much but is use to being picked up. She does get mad if she has not ate in awhile. I am only asking for the money for the cage the dragon is free. Comes with a custon top that is hand made for proper ventelation. All that is required is the purchase of a light and may be some new gravel. The tank can not hold water due to a leak at the very top. This does come with the stand. WANTED: FEMALE BEARDED DRAGON
Me and my fiance have had bearded dragons for a while now and have finally come across a male in good health conditions and are wanting to get a female to breed. We have a Pastel German Giant female that I have had now for almost a year, she is basically a rescue because she was way to over bred by the people who last had her so breeding her is a huge NEGATIVE! We have been looking for a female of maybe 1 to 2 yrs old because our male is 2 1/2 yrs and by breeding standards its best to start breeding BD'S atleast at the age of one or two.To anyone interested in helping us out, if we was to purchase a female from anyone she would be taken the best care of. We are highly knowledgable of these reptiles and we take the best care of our "kids" a

Your Complete Guide to Caring for Your Pet at Every Stage of Life
by Liz Palika, Richard C. Paull (Editor)
My comments: This is the best book about Bearded Dragons that I have read. It covers just about everything. From proper care to "how to train your BD". If you'll only buy one book - buy this one! (=r/and the one below!) The Bearded Dragon Manual
by Philippe De Vosjoli, Robert Mailloux
My comments: I have to admit that I was a bit skeptic about buying this book at first - but it turned out to be one of the best books I have read about Bearded Dragons = Another favorite! Why I was skeptic? Because it is an updated, revised version of "The General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons". But I found it to be a *completely* new book. One of the best! You can find everything you want to know about dragons here. Even if you already got of "The General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons" you can buy this book, this new one is much more complete and totally different in my opinion. The book covers even the "small questions" that no other book brings up. So - I highly recommend this book! It is the most up-to-date and complete guide available for Bearded Dragons. Size: Length - 250mm. Identification: Large, robust bearded dragon with well developed beard. The inside of the mouthis usually bright yellow. This dragon is usually a shade of grey, although occasionally can be yellowish brown, brown to reddish brown. On juveniles there is a prominent pattern but on adults this is obscure or absent. There is sometimes dark or pale blotches on the body. Their belly is white to pale grey with short streaks running along the length of the body. The mature males develop a grey to black 'beard' and an obscure pale green to blue tinge on the forepart of their head. Call/Song:
Eastern Australia, from Cooktown (Qld) to south-eastern South Australia. Habitat: Woodlands and dry eucalypt forests (even in urban regions).
Feeding: Feeds on insects, small lizards and snakes. Breeding/Nesting: Clutches of 15-35 eggs are laid in shallow burrows. Occasionally 2 clutches are laid per season. Movement: Some lizards (especially the dominant males) regularly engage in a variety of display movements or sequences, particularly during courtship or defense of territory. Up to 75 different sequences have been observed, including head-bobbing, head-licking, push-ups, erecting beard, expanding body and changing colour.
If approached, the bearded dragon will tend to remain still, relying on its camouflaged colouration for protection. As a last resort, the dragon will take a defense posture (as seen in photograph).

ENCLOSURE

A 10 - 20 gallon aquarium is sufficient for juveniles. As the lizards grow, increase the size of the enclosure. Adults should have plenty of room to remain active. A floor area of 1.5 - 2 feet square or larger is recommended for each adult. Males should not be kept together unless a very large enclosure is used as they tend to fight in confined spaces
SUBSTRATE
Sand is your best choice. Avoid silica sand as it's fine dust is harmful to you and the lizards. You can obtain sanitized play sand at your local home center. Provide a layer of at least 2 inches. Keep the sand clean by sifting and removing any waste with a cat scooper used for cat boxes. Change the sand completely every 3 months, or sooner if needed. Decorate with Zoo Med REPTI-FLORA™, drift wood, grape vines or Zoo Med LIZARD LADDERS™.
Overall daytime temperatures should be 85ºf with a basking area of 90 - 95ºf aimed at a branch or large rock on one end of the enclosure. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 75ºf.

Bearded dragons are good to start with as they are quite good tempered useually. I would certainly not go with an iguana for a first one as they grow very large and I have heard some have problems with women at that time of the month (however i dont know if this is true or not)

Taking care of bearded dragons
This article is about a lizard called the bearded dragon and how to take care of it for those that are thinking about buying one and keeping it as a pet.
Bearded dragons are becoming one of the most popular lizards to have as a pet. Bearded dragons are from south, central Australia. They are drunal lizards (active during the day). With proper care these lizards can live ten years in captivity. All of these lizards that are available in the United States are captive bred from founder animals imported from Europe because of the wildlife laws in Australia. When housing your bearded dragon, you should use a bare enclosure, either a glass aquarium or a large plastic enclosure. Its also a good idea to have a screen cover on top of the enclosure to prevent the lizard from escaping and to prevent children or other pets from getting a hold of it. A ten gallon tank should be large enough for a new hatchling, but within six months or less, the lizard will need a bigger enclosure at least 24 inches or longer. When they become adults, a 50 gallon tank or larger should be used especially if you are going to put more than one lizard in the same tank. Adult bearded dragons love to climb branches and bask, so its a good idea to include branches for climbing and a basking site for basking. Another good idea is to have hiding spots especially if you are going to house females and males in the same enclosure. The bottom of the tank should either be bare, have paper toweling, newsprint, or sand.

100. Lizard Heaven - General Care Of Bearded Dragons
General Care of bearded Dragons, Pogona Vitticeps.
http://www.lizardheaven.com/bearded.htm
GENERAL
The Inland Bearded Dragon, Pogona vitticeps , is native to eastern continental Australia, but most of the beardies in pet stores are now captive bred. The name Bearded Dragon comes from the beard of adult males, and the Australian word for this type of lizard. Their color ranges from the "normal" sandy colored tans and beiges to Golds, Oranges, and Reds.
Bearded Dragons make excellent reptile pets. Prominent spikes make them look like dinosaurs, but they are usually quite tame and easy to handle. They can even make good pets for children, if properly supervised, and their relatively small size makes them very manageable. A full-grown Bearded Dragon, snout to vent, is less than twelve inches, or approximately 20-24 inches snout to tail.
Bearded Dragons have just about the best temperment of all lizards (although water dragon owners might disagree!), they are generally docile, and many seem to actually enjoy being handled. My two watch my every move around the room, often pacing their enclosures and practically "begging" for food and attention! And boy, can they eat!
HOUSING
Here are some things you need to remember when it comes to housing beardies. First, they are very active lizards and need room to roam. Mel and Sydney thoroughly investigate their environments on a daily basis. (Sydney still hasn't figured out that rocks and driftwood don't taste good, though.) Second, the bare-minimum size for an adult Dragon is a 40-gallon breeder aquarium (36" x 18" x 16"); for a pair, use at least a 100-gallon. Custom wood cages can be used and are a good idea if you plan to house several adults together, but can be difficult to clean due to the porous nature of the wood. This can be overcome by using a non-toxic polyurethane or epoxy coating on the wood. You can also find cages made from molded plastic. They can be expensive, but are lightweight, durable, and easy to clean.
