We are private breeders (a husband/wife team) of bearded dragons - specializing in the many different color morphs of bearded dragons ( Pogona Vitticeps ). We purchased our first bearded dragon many years ago as a hatchling and our collection has now grown to about 150 adults. Even though beardies look somewhat threatening, they are very personable lizards. Bearded Dragons are hardy lizards that attain a moderate adult size and you can care for them rather easily. Bearded dragons have become one of the most popular pet lizards because they make a great kids pet or first time herper pet.
Bearded Dragon ( Pogona Vitticeps) - We are currently working with many different blood-lines and color morphs of bearded dragons... which are divided into 3 seperate breeding cycles each year. All babies are approximately 6-7 inches long, unless otherwise noted and sexing of the hatchlings is available. Pet shops and wholesalers please inquire. Care sheets are provided.

This diurnal agamid continues to increase in popularity because it is easy to handle, care for, and breed in captivity. Unfortunately, little pictorial documentation is available regarding normal comparative clinical hematologic morphology of commonly seen reptiles, especially lizards. This section intends to review clinical morphology with intent to differentiate commonly seen white blood cells of the bearded dragon. Address (URL): http://www.arav.org/journals/JA015964.htm

Part 3: Adenoviruses Roger Klingenberg DVM, The Vivarium , August/September 1998, 9(6) In Parts 1 and 2 [in The Vivarium , 9(4) and 9(5)], I discussed the parasitic and nutritional diseases seen commonly in bearded dragons ("Pogona vitticeps). We discussed how bearded dragons are not always "bullet proof" lizards. As if these afflictions weren't enough, an adenovirus is now being diagnosed with increasing frequency. While this virus appears to primarily take advantage of the young and weak, all ages can be affected. Let's discuss some aspects of this viral disorder. Adenovirus disease in bearded dragons is poorly understood for the same reason many reptile disorders are not well delineated lack of funding for critical research. Here's what we know. Signs of Adenovirus Infection:
In bearded dragons that are sick with adenoviruses, there are unfortunately no specific signs to watch for. Most of the bearded dragons that have been diagnosed with adenoviruses have had a history of being poor doers, sometimes showing poor appetite, and sometimes exhibiting diarrhea. Sometimes, they die. The young, especially those four to 12 weeks of age, appear to be affected more often than older specimens.

Jackie and I have 3 children and 12 grandchildren. We keep and raise Bearded Dragons from Australia. We have for over six years now. We think that the Bearded Dragon (the Pogona vitticeps)is one of, if not the greatest of all reptile pets. We just love them! We have the Inland Bearded Dragons and the Lawsons or Rankins Dragons. We also have a few other types of lizards, we also have the Argentina Red Tegu and a few geckos. Following is a list of most of our herps. Everytime we go to a herp show we add to our collection. So it is almost impossible to keep this list current but I will try. (Updated 04/15/2003)

What is a Bearded Dragon? A bearded dragon is a medium-sized lizard native to Australia, which has become an enormously popular pet in the Americas and Europe due to their gentle nature and manageable size. Bearded dragons are one of the easier lizards to look after as a pet. Their docility ensures one rarely need worry about them biting or attacking visitors, though they may occasionally hiss at newcomers to their space. They can subsist primarily on readily available vegetable matter, supplemented with small amounts of insects. While some pet lizards (such as iguanas) require enormous enclosures and constant attention, bearded dragons are comfortable in much smaller areas. A tank for a bearded dragon should have a colder and hotter side. The hot region should be around 95F (35C) for adults and 110F (43C) for younger bearded dragons. Bearded dragons should never be subjected to temperatures lower than 65F (18C), and the cold side should be kept substantially higher, around 85F (29C). All members of the genus Pogona are bearded dragons, but the species most often found as pets is

Distribution
There are three types of bearded dragons commonly kept by enthusiasts in Australia; the Eastern Bearded Dragon ( Pogona Barbata), the Pygmy Bearded Dragon ( P. henrylawsoni) and the Central Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) - also known as the 'Centralian' (see pics above). The Eastern Bearded Dragon occurs along the length of the Great Dividing Range and is replaced in more arid areas by the Central Bearded Dragon. Pygmy Bearded Dragons are native to the black soil plains of Central Queensland. Bearded dragons are terrestrial, sun-loving species and it is not uncommon to see them basking on the road side, on fence posts or logs. Of all the reptiles commonly kept, bearded dragons are amongst the most popular, due to their availability and relative ease of care.
Appearance
Bearded dragons are named for the distinctive flap of skin which lies below their jaw. When threatened, these lizards assume a defensive posture, opening their mouths and pushing their throat skin forward to make this 'beard'. This, combined with the strong spikes which line the lizard's throat and the side of its body serve as a deterrent to would-be predators.

BellaOnline's Reptiles and Amphibians Editor Feeding your Bearded Dragon There are many things you can feed your bearded dragon. They enjoy eating moths, meal worms, wax worms, and crickets and super meal worms. Bearded dragons also eat greens such as alfalfa plant(crushed and moistened rabbit food), kale, dandylion, collard greens and other dark green leafy greens. Never feed your dragon a firefly or bee it will kill it within a matter of minutes. Avacado, spinach and rhubarb should also be avoided because they contain oxalic acid which can be toxic to your bearded dragons.
If you’re planning on feeding crickets to your lizard make sure you don’t feed it too many at once because crickets are known to get hungry and eat the lizard’s skin. Young bearded dragons should not be fed large crickets or beetles because they can have problems with their nerves and digestion when the food is too large.

Bearded Dragon (Pogona Vitticepts)
The Bearded Dragon is a moderate sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail). This lizard is native to South and Central Australia. They are active during the day and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the lights going off in the evening. When these lizards are out in the wild, they spend most of their time perched on logs, rocks, and tree trunks, alert for the approach of any potential food item. They store nutrients in huge abdominal fat bodies, then dig into the ground and hibernate for long periods during unfavorable times. Female bearded dragons lay clutches of 15-25 eggs. The hatchlings grow rapidly and are usually 5 inches long by the end of their first month. There is both coloration and size variation among different races of bearded dragons. Coloration varies from a uniform tan to chocolate brown, with different hues on the head, throat, back and tail. Males tend to develop much broader heads and a larger black beard. Both sexes engage in stereotypical arm waving behavior to appease more dominant animals. This animal is becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. One of the good qualities which makes bearded dragons such an appealing pet lizard is that with minimal training, they will sit calmly for moderate periods of time in your hand or on your shoulder. Dragons are very mellow lizards, but if provoked they will exhibit an open-mouthed threat display. If this display is ignored, a bite may follow.

    Explanation
    1) " Bearded" in the term Bearded Dragon Lizard
A full beard A beard is the hair that grows on a man's chin, cheeks, neck, and the area abovethe upper lip (the opposite is a clean-shaven face). In the course ofhistory, men with facial hair have been ascribed various and varyingattributes such as wisdom, sexual potency, or high status, but also lack of cleanliness and refinement or crankiness and aneccentric disposition. Beards also play an important role in some religions. Zeus and Poseidon are always portrayed with beards, Apollo never and Dionysus rarely. A bearded Hermes was replaced with the more familiar beardless youth in the 5th century. Amish and Hutterite men shave untilthey are married, then grow a beard and are never thereafter without one but it's a particular form of a beard (see Visual markers of marital status ). In Orthodox Christianity, beardsare worn by the priesthood, and at times have been required for all believers - see Old Believers. Sikhs do not remove a single hair from their body. Manydevout Muslims also grow their facial hair, ostensibly in emulation of the Prophet - see also life under Taliban rule. In urban circles of Western Europe and the Americas, beards were out of fashion after the early 17th century, returned to fashion after the Napoleonic Era, and were out of fashion again during thefirst part of the 20th century. Beards, together with long hair, werereintroduced to mainstream society in Western Europe and North America by the hippies in the mid-1960s. At thebeginning of the 21st century, the closely clipped Verdi beard, usually with an integrated moustache, also closely clipped, is relatively common, as is a stubble beard (especially on younger men). However, although Full beards are increasingly seen in these areas, they remain a fringe phenomenon.

These lizards can reach a snout to tail length of anywhere from 16-24 inches long. The life span for a dragon is 4-10 years. A healthy dragon should be able to live up to the age of 7. Out in the wild, bearded dragons can be found throughout eastern Australia with habitats including arid woodlands and arid rocky semi-deserts. The bearded dragon are expert climbers, and can be found on branches trees, or even fenceposts when near human inhabited areas. Small spikes can be seen on their bodies but these spikes are not sharp, just soft skin. They have long fingers with claws to help with climbing. Eyes are located on the side of the head and a dragon must turn its head sideways to see straight.
