How to Hold a Bearded Dragon
Did you see the movie "Holes"? It pictures these strange and frightening creatures that puff up and attack! Those scary looking lizards are called Bearded Dragons. However, don't let the movie, or their unique looks, scare you. They are really gentle, friendly and easy to hold.
Steps
  • Approach the lizard slowly until you are able to gently pet its head. When the Bearded Dragon has blinked or closed its eyes, it is calm enough to pick up. Gently put your hand under its body. You might want to use your thumb and forefinger to support the front arms while the body rests in the palm of your hand. Pick up the dragon and place it on your arm, chest or lap and they will most likely stay there comfortably while you pet it.

CARE OF THE AUSTRALIAN BEARDED DRAGON
Pogina vitticeps The inland Bearded Dragon, Pogina Vitticeps, is becoming increasingly popular as a pet lizard in the U.S. Bearded dragons are among the tamest of all lizards. Most bearded dragons adapt easily to handling and are calm enough to perch on their owner’s shoulder, or be placed on a countertop, or enjoy the view from a windowsill.
Bearded dragons are omnivorous, and feed on a variety of insects, small animals, flowers, greenery, and fruits. In lean times, they have the ability to go dormant and live off the fat of their bodies. Captive bearded dragons will sometimes hide in a sheltered spot in the cage and go dormant for a few weeks, then appear one day and start eating and behaving quite normally again. Dragons should be sprayed with water every day, both on the cage and on their heads. They often lap water as it is sprayed on them. Keep a fine mist of spray directed on their heads as long as they keep lapping. This simulates the natural way bearded dragons get water of licking up drops of dew they find on plants in the morning. Dragons require a dry cage, but need to get a lot of water from daily sprayings and from the fresh vegetables in their diet. Don’t expect bearded dragons to drink from a water dish, but some may learn to drink that way. Dragons like to run through very shallow pans of water in their cage. This water must be kept clean. Polluted water can be a source of parasite and diseases.

They have great personalities and easily adapt to living in captivity. Bearded Dragons originate from Australia, inhabiting the drier, central part of the country. Their diet should be varied and may consist of crickets, madagascan hissing roaches, king mealworms (zophobas) and newborn mice. Vegetables and fruits should be offered twice weekly. The vegetables and fruits should be chopped up and mixed together as a salad. Fruits and vegetables may include kale, collards, carrots, mustard greens, apples and bananas. Vitamin and mineral supplements should be added to the salad mixture. All prey animals should be dusted with a high calcium supplement. Avoid feeding Bearded Dragons fireflies, they are deadly! Dragons can reach a size of about 26 inches in length for the males and around 18 inches for the females; babies are born at around three inches. The spines on a bearded dragon’s body are utilized for defense, making it very difficult to be swallowed by a predator. These lizards are very tame and will generally stand still allowing their owners to pet them or carry them around, they are very responsive and will learn to eat even when held. It is possible to keep one male and several females in the same enclosure.

The circus. The place where people show off their physical talents. But has anyone thought about what a lizard circus would be like? The perfect species for this would be the Australian Bearded Dragons. Although not every Bearded Dragon of the eight different species actually have beards, when they do have beards, the females have beards as well as the males. Therefore, you already have your bearded lady. Also, their bellies can be gray, brown, or brick red, so instead of a red clown nose, they have red bellies. As for fire eaters, the Dragons' body when basking heats higher than 100 degrees F! So, these wonderful lizards are amazing, and they also make great pets.
    The Lovable Lizards
is included in their diet. It consists of grey crickets, giant mealworms, mealworms, waxworms, pinkie mice, and roaches. Although protien is without question the main course on the Bearded Dragons' menu, finely chopped vegetables are necessary as well. They consist of mustard greens, collard greens, beet greens, kale, bok choy, thawed mixed veggies, fancy dark lettuce, sprouts, green beans, peas, nasturtium leaves and flowers, hibiscus leaves and flowers, and dandelion leaves and flowers. Although the bugs in their diet may seem, well, unpleasant, after the owner of a Bearded Dragon has gotten used to it, the large lizard will become a friend that will last for years.

The Inland Bearded Dragon, Pogona vitticeps , is becoming increasingly popular as a pet lizard in the U.S. Bearded dragons are among the tamest of all lizards, and their outgoing personalities, activity level, voracious appetites and interesting social behaviors make them a very captivating lizard to observe. They have a very rapid growth rate, so the 4" hatchlings can grow to their adult size within a year. Most bearded dragons adapt easily to handling and are calm enough to perch on their owner's shoulder, or be placed on a countertop, or enjoy the view from a windowsill.
    Care of hatchlings:
Young hatchlings can be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium, with a 30-60 watt spotlight at one end above a basking rock. The wattage of the spotlight needs to be adjusted to allow the dragons to reach a body temperature of 100 degrees after basking under the light for an hour, as they need to get very warm to digest their food. Arrange the rocks and branches to provide several basking levels. Watch the hatchlings so you can arrange basking areas that they like to use. Arrange branches and add shelters so the hatchlings can choose from a range of temperatures and heights to maintain their optimum body temperature. . Type Cold blooded reptile, in the lizard family. Diurnal (up during the day and sleeping at night) Temperament Bearded Dragons make excellent reptile pets. With one of the best temperaments of all lizards, they are generally docile, and many seem to actually enjoy being handled. They are diurnal (up during the day and sleeping at night), which means you can watch them during the day. They will watch your every move sometimes pacing their tank as if begging for attention and to be fed (they love to eat!). Their spikes make them look like dinosaurs, however, they are usually quite tame and easy to handle. They can even make good pets for children, if properly supervised, and their relatively small size makes them very manageable. Bearded dragons vary in their personality. Some are more personable and responsive then others. Some show more signs of intelligence than others. Size When first born baby bearded dragons are just under 4 inches in length and weigh about 1/10 of an ounce (2 1/2-3 grams). Adults typically are 19-23 inches and weight at least 3/4 of a pound (250 grams). The German giant morphn type can reach up to 26 inches in length.
