PLEASE NOTE - All information in this FAQ/caresheet has come from our personal experience and/or research. We're working on adding links to useful information and places for further research - so please be patient with me. :) Many 'opinions', in many areas of care, vary from one person to another and can be controversial.... Please remember though, these are all opinions... and contained here are ours. Sources we found extremely useful when beginning our collection in Bearded dragons are - "The General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons", written by Phillippe de Vosjoli and Robert Mailloux 1993.... and many, many knowledgable people willing to share their personal experiences.
General Description -
General Care - Bearded Dragons need little care, beyond daily maintenance, once they are established in/acclimated to their new environment. Care should certainly be taken to emulate their natural setting to reduce stress to the animal... As should a schedule be developed for lighting and feeding for the same purposes.

Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0442 Twenty-four juvenile bearded dragon lizards, Pogona vitticeps, were divided into four groups of six lizards each for a preliminary feeding study. Groups 1-3 were fed vegetables and crickets ad lib for 90 days, with or without dietary supplements (Tetra Vitalife and Reed's MVP). Group 4 lizards were fed an experimental dry lizard diet only for 90 days. Growth of lizards was followed by monitoring body weight and length, and was not significantly changed by any diet. However, the Vitolife and MVP supplements resulted in significantly increased serum levels of vitamin E and the experimental dry diet resulted in significantly decreased serum vitamin E compared to the lizards fed unsupplemented vegetables and crickets. Thiamin (vitamin B1) was significantly increased in lizards receiving the MVP supplement or the dry diet, compared to the unsupplemented lizards. Additional diet-related differences were observed and are presented. [author abstract]

Sexing and Characteristics: Males have two hemipenes just past the vent. These are visible by gently lifting the tail up with the dragon in the palm of your hand, facing away from you. If you see two bumps (one on each side) and a dimple in the middle, you are looking at a male. Males also tend to have larger heads, larger fat deposits behind the head, and thicker tails at the base. They also tend to be larger in general.
Females are harder to sex, as sometimes you think you are looking at a female (again, dragon in the palm of your hand, lift tail up) and she will appear to have one or no bumps. Sometimes this may be an immature male whose sex organs have not developed yet. Females heads also tend to not be as large, and their beards while they will turn black, generally do not turn as black as the males. Their tails also may not be quite as thick at the base as the male.

Bearded Dragon
The Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is a type of agamid lizard found in the desert regions of Australia. Of the several species of the Pogona genus, P. vitticeps is the most commonly seen in pet stores Bearded dragons are omnivores and consume a wide variety of foods. In captivity, dragons will consume crickets, mealworms, and other commercially and wild collected insects as well as vegetable material such as collard greens, turnip greens, and other leafy green vegetables. The animal should also be given vitamin supplements, most importantly calcium. The bearded dragon is a medium sized lizard. As a desert species, bearded dragons prefer a basking site in their cage that reaches at least 90 degrees fahrenheit during the day. A dragon cage should have a warm side and a cool side with overall cage temperature never below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Explanation
    1) " Bearded" in the term Bearded Dragon Lizards
A full beard A beard is the hair that grows on a man's chin, cheeks, neck, and the area abovethe upper lip (the opposite is a clean-shaven face). In the course ofhistory, men with facial hair have been ascribed various and varyingattributes such as wisdom, sexual potency, or high status, but also lack of cleanliness and refinement or crankiness and aneccentric disposition. Beards also play an important role in some religions. Zeus and Poseidon are always portrayed with beards, Apollo never and Dionysus rarely. A bearded Hermes was replaced with the more familiar beardless youth in the 5th century. Amish and Hutterite men shave untilthey are married, then grow a beard and are never thereafter without one but it's a particular form of a beard (see Visual markers of marital status ). In Orthodox Christianity, beardsare worn by the priesthood, and at times have been required for all believers - see Old Believers. Sikhs do not remove a single hair from their body. Manydevout Muslims also grow their facial hair, ostensibly in emulation of the Prophet - see also life under Taliban rule. In urban circles of Western Europe and the Americas, beards were out of fashion after the early 17th century, returned to fashion after the Napoleonic Era, and were out of fashion again during thefirst part of the 20th century. Beards, together with long hair, werereintroduced to mainstream society in Western Europe and North America by the hippies in the mid-1960s. At thebeginning of the 21st century, the closely clipped Verdi beard, usually with an integrated moustache, also closely clipped, is relatively common, as is a stubble beard (especially on younger men). However, although Full beards are increasingly seen in these areas, they remain a fringe phenomenon.

    General:
The inland or central bearded dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) is rapidly becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. A moderate-sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail), it has a melow dispostion and seems to enjoy interacting with humans. A native to south, central Australia (see range map at right) Pogona viticeps can be found in arid, rocky, semi-desert regions and arid open woodlands. They are diurnal (active during the day) and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the light going off in the evening. With proper care bearded dragons have lived for 10 years in captivity. Because of very restrictive wildlife export laws in Australia, all individuals available in the United States are captive bred from founder animals imported from Europe.
Housing: Initially a relatively bare enclosure is preferred, either glass aquarium or large plastic enclosure. A screen cover is recommended, primarily to protect the lizard from children and / or other pets. Within the first year the dragon will grow to almost its full length, so while a 10 gallon aquarium may be suitable for a new hatchling, within 6 months or less the animal will require an enclosure 24 inches long (e.g., a 20 gallon long aquarium). As adults, a 50 gal tank (or larger) is preferable, especially if two or more animals are to be housed together. As adults bearded dragons love to climb branches and bask, be sure if several animals are housed in one large enclosure to provide multiple basking sites. They also benefit from having hiding spots. Females especially appreciate having a safe place to escape from the male's attentions during breeding season.
