Tip: Bead Storage Container Options Bead storage can be made easy with the right bead container. Look for a bead storage container in small and medium sizes or in single or double configurations. A good bead storage container is clear and allows stacking of same-size caddies. They should come with labels for marking size, style, material or cost of the beads inside. Find a bead container where you can remove the cap and pour out beads from one section of the container while the other beads stay in their own compartments. You will only frustrate yourself and curb your creativity if you try digging beads out of a container with only one lid.
Tip: Shapes of Freshwater Pearls Natural freshwater pearls Tip: Bead Board A Bead board makes jewelry design and stringing much easier. The board's curved groove lets you arrange beads just like they'll appear around your neck. You can move them around until you are happy with the arrangement. The

134. Ancient Ways - Featuring Traditional Native American Arts
Shoshoneowned crafts store offers beadwork, pipes, and traditional Native American art from the Wind River reservation.
http://www.ancientwayswest.com/
Walking into the Ancient Ways' showroom is like stepping into a museum. The walls are hung with hand drums made on the premises from locally harvested and tanned deer or elk. There are beaded bags and moccasins lining the shelves, and Native American music plays softly on the stereo. Ancient Ways features authentic Indian artwork made by local artist on the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming. The Keenes purchase artwork from approximately 100 reservation families. Because so much of this work is produced nearby, the Keenes can tell visitors stories about each of the artists whose work they carry. When you buy a product at Ancient Ways,
the Keene family guarantee its authenticity. Ancient Ways, LLC

Beadwork in the Northwest Territories
Since before the time of European contact, embroidery has been the art form women used to add beauty to their clothing and to express individual creativity. Although porcupine quills have given way to beads and geometric designs have been replaced by floral ones, the cultural role of embroidery continues in the Northwest Territories today. History of Beading Brightly coloured seed beads first became available to the Great Slave Lake Region about the middle of the 19th century, from the Hudson’s Bay Company. About the same time, Metis introduced new designs to local women who were using porcupine quills to make European designs of zigzags, lines, repeated triangles and diamonds. The women welcomed and enjoyed the brightly coloured beads and new designs. Beads could be used far more freely and easily than the scarcer quills. Owning beads reflected increased social standing and wealth and wearing them advertised it. By the end of the 19th century, distinctive regional styles had developed reflecting the adaptability, creativity and innovation of the Dene and Metis beadworkers. Beading Techniques Various materials, such as moose and caribou hides, stroud, and coloured velvet, can be used as canvas for beading. Black velvet was a popular backing in the early 20th century. A flour and water paste is applied using a pointed instrument, to draw pattern outlines on velvet. Charcoal, lead pencil or ink are used on hide.

Sioux Beadwork
Western Sioux Beadwork - Designs and Colors
by Chuck Bousquet
originally published as CIHA Indian Craft Series No. 1020
The following information is a very, very brief resume on the Western Sioux beadwork designs and colors. It is assumed that Sioux-style hobbyists are already aware that the beadwork is done in lazy stitch directly on the item they are going to decorate (with a few exceptions such as shirt and legging strips which are beaded on separate pieces of leather and then the piece is sewn onto the particular item in the appropriate place). With this assumption, therefore, let’s get into the designs and colors with just a little background history first. Before glass beads were introduced to the Plains by traders, the Sioux had perfected the art of using porcupine quills to decorate their clothes and belongings. The quills were dyed red, bright yellow, weak blue, bright orange, weak green and purple. Vegetable dyes were used until about 1880 when the whites traded aniline dyes and the colors became brighter and more varied. This quill-work was done on pipebag fringe, kneebands, bustle ties and other large objects using the simple wrapping technique; the sewing and weaving methods were used for moccasins, pipes and feather decorations. By the late 1880’s to 1890’s, the Sioux had a style of beading using certain colors and designs that were different than any other tribe. There are many techniques involved in making beadwork look like the style of the tribe you desire to represent. Not only colors and designs, but the method of beading, are very important. The following are guidelines to help you make your finished beadwork look Sioux.
