    SARAGURO: COLLARES / BEADWORK NECKLACES
Bead necklaces are worn by Saraguro women both for daily wear and for special occasions. Beadworking is done mainly by Saraguro women, although a few men also do beadwork. The first necklace shown below (top left) is from the 1960s. Other necklaces from this period were woven with the same basic pattern, variations consisting primarily in numbers of rows and in color combinations. Since the 1980s (all the rest shown) there has been a continuous development of new patterns and styles of necklace beadwork. Also, more recently, Saraguros have been beading bracelets and "lizard" ( largato ) necklaces (shown on the fifth row), both of which are worn by men as well as by women.

The carvers use a rough, local stone called steatite. Daniel Alareak has been working as an artist since he was 12 years old. Daniel learned carving from his grandparents, Michael and Eva Aliktiluk, well known artists themselves. Daniel's carvings have been on display in British Columbia and Europe. He is well-known for his caribou antler carvings. Daniel started making jewelery in 1994, working with walrus tusk ivory. As an artist, he uses every part of the animal, creating lovely pieces. Melanie Tabvahtah makes sealskin windpants, kamiks, mitts, parkas, amauti and amautik. She also carves buttons from ivory and caribou. She can make any clothing to order.

leather (usually clothing, moccasins, or containers) and beaded strands (usually used for jewelry, but sometimes also as ornamental covering to wrap around a gourd or other ceremonial or art object) For beaded leather arts, Indian craftspeople sew each bead onto a leather backing (or cloth, today). A related craft, quillwork , involved softening and dying stiff porcupine quills and affixing them to leather, to birchbark, or to other crafts. Indian quillwork largely died out as an art form when seed beads became available to the northern and Plains tribes, but today some native artists are taking a renewed interest in quilling. As for beaded strands, Indian craftspeople stitch the beads together into strings or a mesh, using sinew, thread or wire. Beading strands and beading onto leather are both very complicated, time-consuming and delicate tasks which require many years of practice to do well.

We are... "All things must change to something new, to something strange."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Life changes. We change. We get older, put on a few pounds, get slower, get smarter. And through it all, there is change. This change requires a move. Mom and I are moving from Oklahoma to North Carolina. We plan to live on the coast - maybe not right at the beach but at least a couple of minutes from it. So far, I've come from Dallas Texas to Duncan Oklahoma and now I'm planning to move to the East Coast, all in the period of a little over a year. "The more things change, the more they remain... insane.
It is amazing how much stuff you find that you have accumulated when it comes down to deciding what to pack and what to part with. You start looking at all the junk that has found its way into drawers or the back of closets. Did I ever really wear these shoes? How long ago was it that I read that book? And what is this little do-dad and what does it do? As a nation, Americans must generate an enormous amount of junk. And I do believe that most of it is residing in my house. Why should I find it necessary to save ink pens that no longer work or books of matches when I don't smoke? How did I collect a ton of information written down on little yellow sticky notes? In fact, how did I ever survive without those little sticky notes? Moving from one town to another is hard enough, but when it involves different states that are half a continent away, it becomes a little more complicated. When I was younger, I seemed to think nothing of heading out with just a suitcase and a few boxes. Moving was easy - almost fun. However, with age comes inconvenience. And lots of junk. I've found a lot of junk that I obtained though the years but don't remember buying. Bits of paper, business cards, small plastic thingamabobs and whatchamacallits that reside in the back of desk drawers or boxes on the closet shelf.
