Cane Basketry
A project to document the traditions of Choctaw split cane basketry was completed in 2002. This project was a joint effort by the Jena Band of Choctaw, the U. S. Forest Service, and the Regional Folklife Program. The project was designed to teach Jena Band members to identify, harvest, and process cane in order to pass the art of basketry on in the community. Tribal members registered for classes under the guidance of basket maker, Rose Fisher Blasingame . The project was documented both photographically and on videotape by the U.S. Forest Service and the Regional Folklife Program.

ExhibitsUSA No Boundaries: Contemporary Basketry Click image for slideshow Basketry is widely accepted as the oldest known form of craft. Since ancient times people have constructed baskets to fill specific needs: to collect, carry, display, or store. Through the centuries, the basket has remained an integral part of daily life in many cultures. Even in contemporary western society, awash in high-tech gadgetry, nothing has yet replaced the wastebasket, the picnic basket, and the shopping basket: low-tech but essential articles. For the past quarter-century, artists have been taking the simple basket form and pushing it in new and exciting directions, creating objects infused with content and meaning. Working within already broad traditions, the artists in No Boundaries: Contemporary Basketry are inventing new methods of construction, often using highly unconventional materials, and creating both utilitarian and nonutilitarian vessels, even abstract sculptures. In the process, they transform the everyday into the exotic. The work of some of the most innovative American basketry artists is on view in No Boundaries No Boundaries: Contemporary Basketry is organized by The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, the oldest nonprofit crafts organization in the country and a leader in the American crafts movement at the turn of the last century. The educational programming potential for this exhibition is virtually inexhaustible and could include hands-on activities that invite children and adults to explore the materials and techniques of basketry.

IN THE PITT RIVERS MUSEUM The Collection Browse through the online catalogue Search the online catalogue Notes on the database Notes on the fields Notes on the database This basketry database is aimed primarily at basketmakers and artists, but it is hoped that it will also be of interest to museum professionals, and to members of the public. The main purpose of the project is to identify the items in the Museum that have been made using basketry techniques, and to enhance the information about the methods of construction. In general, only those objects that can be easily seen are included, and 'string work' has not been included. However, sometimes these rules have been broken for a few 'not to be missed' items. There are also data on basketry tools and materials. It is hoped that sufficient information has been included so as to allow the basket or object to be seen as a real thing: made by someone and used by someone. It is intended that the view of the object in the display cabinet will enable a visitor to the Museum to find the object with ease. At the same time, it is intended that this view will give the web-user a good idea of the object within its museum setting. Further information on each object can be accessed by clicking on the Pitt Rivers Museum accession number (see below). Notes on the Fields Below are brief explanations of the fields used in this database. Please e-mail

Basketry
A common feature of most baskets, both ancient and modern, is that they are made from plant material that requires very little processing before being used. Grasses, reeds and palms need only to be dried before being woven into baskets or matting; willow stems are debarked and rattan (climbing palm) stems are cut into strips and dried. The main requirement for basketry fibres is that they should be flexible, strong and durable.
Baskets, or basketry products, fulfil a wide variety of uses in many cultures, particularly in Africa: baskets may serve as granaries or other food storage units, sieves, fish traps, bird cages, wall panels, items of furniture or even coffins. In more tropical parts of the world plants such as grasses, palms and rattans and members of the banana family are commonly used in basketry. In cooler, northern hemisphere countries, willows ( Salix spp. ) have been a major source of strong, flexible stems for basket making.

Basketry: The Oldest Craft By Patti McCormick In today's high-tech world, many people have taken great interest in learning about handmade items and the handicrafts of yesteryear. Of all the old crafts candlemaking, candymaking, spinning, etc., basketry is the only craft that cannot be easily automated. Therefore, all baskets, even now, are essentially "handmade." Basketry, of course, is centuries old and is thought by many to be the oldest craft. To me, it is also one of the most interesting, relaxing and useful crafts of all. I started making baskets about ten years ago, and have been addicted ever since. The sense of accomplishment over a finished basket is a wonderful feeling. I was so excited when I hooked up to the internet and found all the wonderful information just waiting there! The internet is a great tool for gathering information and learning new things. There are virtually hundreds of basketry sites on the web today. Below are a few of my favorite sites that I return to time after time. The sites I have chosen here are mainly on the history and instruction of basketmaking, but a few also deal with supplies and sales of completed baskets, kits or patterns.
