Basketry
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1057

Suzye Ogawa embellishes her bronze sculptures with basketry techniques.
Ogawa uses traditional weaving, coiling and winding techniques to incorporate basketry into her work.
The Carol Duvall Show camera crew visits Suzye Ogawa in Santa Monica, Calif., to focus on how she uses basketry to augment her bronze sculptures. Using very traditional basketry materials and techniques to complete a design, Ogawa comes by her love of texture and detail naturally. She first began teaching herself sculpting and weaving techniques in her father's dentistry lab when she was a child, working with wax used to make dentures. Ogawa's process begins with choosing the type of wax she will use in sculpting her design. After sculpting the design, she sends it to a foundry for bronzing. She then uses a wax resist to give the piece an aged look. Once she achieves the desired color, she cleans off the wax. The next step is selecting the materials to be used in the weaving process. Ogawa uses natural basketry materials that many contemporary basket weavers use, such as pine needles, leaves and grass. She uses traditional techniques such as coiling, winding and weaving to incorporate the weaving into her sculptures.

Coiled Basketry
Sew Much More : Episode SMM-151

The Sew Much More cameras visit Tressa Sularz. Eleven years ago, Tressa Sularz realized her life's ambition when she left the corporate world to pursue her passion for making baskets. Although Tressa does make the traditional woven baskets, it's her coiled baskets that caught our eye.
Tressa uses a needle and thread to form intricate patterns around a core material, then stitches each layer together. She often embellishes the baskets further with beads. We will visit Tressa in the picturesque farmhouse she calls her studio to see her create her coiled baskets.

The bust head and shoulders sculpture defined with images of examples from throughout history, great quotations, and links to other resources.
http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/b/basket.html
b asket basketry , and basketwork - A basket is a woven container made of such tough and bendable materials as twigs or strips ( veneer ) of wood cane rattan reed ... wire , or plastic , often with a handle or handles; or something that resembles a basket, especially in shape or function . Baskets are usually light in weight . Among the most commonly used basketry techniques are plaiting, twining, coiling, and imbrication . Basketry is the art or craft of making baskets, or objects woven like baskets, and is one of the oldest and most universal of crafts, practised among even the most primitive of peoples. It may be that basketry preceded the development of both textiles and fired pottery . Many baskets produced in Europe have, by long tradition , been produced using the rod-like twigs, harvested from willow trees (osier). Much furniture employing basketry techniques has been made using cane, rattan and rush. Examples: Jan Brueghel the Younger (Flemish, 1601-1678), A Basket of Flowers oil on wood panel , 18 1/2 x 26 7/8 inches (47 x 68.3 cm), Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Wabanaki Basketry
A Local Legacy

The Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet tribes of Maine are known as the Wabanaki Indians, or "People of the Dawn." They are known for their baskets that they weave with the leaves of sweet grass and thin strips of an ash tree (splints). These Indian tribes share a common story that tells how their ancestors emerged from an ash tree when the Creator split it with an arrow. So, for thousands of years, they have used ash splints to make baskets for both personal and community use. Today, many people collect them as beautiful works of art. The baskets fall into two categories: work baskets, which are used for gathering, storing, and transporting goods, and fancy baskets, ones that are crafted for the public, with decorative designs. Intricate shapes and designs and bold colors are used to make woven handkerchief baskets, powder-puff holders, purses, vases, wastebaskets, thimble baskets, candy dishes, knitting baskets, cradles, and fans. Mary Mitchell Gabriel, a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe, has spent more than 60 years perfecting the art of basket making. She is working to preserve this important cultural tradition by teaching her two daughters how to make the baskets. She is also teaching others through the Maine Cooperative Extension Service and the Maine Basketmakers Alliance.

The "treads" or long, narrow leaf blades of this grass have been harvested by direct descendents of enslaved Africans of antebellum South Carolina and used as the principle foundation material for constructing African coiled basketry in the Southeast, especially near Charleston (McKissick Museum 1988). Originally, these graceful products provided useful, practical objects or "work baskets" for agricultural and household use on the plantations; today, they have evolved as souvenirs treasured by tourists, and elegant objets d'art ( Fig. 1

    " Neckline Basket"
19" x 18" x 12" My interests lie in the relationship between the mundane and the extraordinary. It is about the basic, yet phenomenal dialogue between technique and materials.
By obsessing over mundane objects like pistachio nut shells or steel washers, dedicating an unbelievable amount of time to each and every one, I am able to transform them from something ordinary into something extraordinary. The materials take on a new life. The viewer discovers their true nature only after close observation of the basket, making the finished pieces both elegant and curious.
