Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art
Sales Gallery
Tai Gallery / Textile Arts represents over 30 Japanese bamboo artists. Most of these artists belong to one of two professional associations although a few are independent. The Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) emphasizes art and sculptural beauty. The Nihon Kogeikai (Japan Craft Arts Association) emphasizes beauty in functional form and technical excellency. The Kogeikai works with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in the selection of craft artists to be named as Living National Treasures of Japan. Some established artists choose to not be associated with a professional association. Young artists who have not yet joined an association are also included in this group.
More information on the professional associations and many of the artists represented by Tai Gallery / Textile Arts can be found in Robert T. Coffland's book, Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Arts, available from Paragon Books and Amazon.com.

In addition, we are able to assist you in having something made to order. Click on our special order link to see some examples of items that have been special ordered.
This close working relationship with the artists ensures they receive a greater share of the proceeds from your purchase than is typically the case when you acquire a piece of their work in a store. In addition, this relationship also ensures you receive the highest quality of work available.
Again, welcome to our site and gallery. We hope you enjoy these unique, handmade original works of art.

While the Islanders are more self-sufficient than the citizens of many larger countries, there remains a pressing need for foreign exchange in order to purchase fuel, vehicles, some building supplies, radio and electronic equipment, and other foreign necessities. The production and sale of Island specialty items accounts for much of their income, with most sales going to the passengers of military and cruise ships and private yachts who detour from normal shipping lanes to stop by the island. For many years, additional sales have been made by mail, usually sparked by word-of-mouth, with very satisfied customers telling their friends of these truly unique gift items. Now, offshore

Unique gourd art created in Muskoka, Canada. Pine needle basketry, masks, bird houses, doll houses and musical instruments.
    http://www.geocities.com/gourdcollectibles/
Traditionally the gourd served many purposes, being used for bowls, utensils, ladels, rattles and musical instruments by peoples living in the tropics and North America. It has been a cultivated plant of both the old and new worlds for thousands of years. A rt P ieces P ine N eedle B asketry
Pine Needle Basketry is a coiling technique using the long leaf pine needles of North America. I have also incorporated pine needles from Muskoka. I have combined the pine needle basketry with the gourd as did the North American Indians many generations ago. The traditional binding was sinew. Also used in the coiling technique is raffia from palm trees of Madagascar. D rums

Masks constructed of gourds were often used in special ceremonies by primitive cultures worldwide. Gourd masks were usually part of an elaborate costume used to invoke or impersonate the spirits. The mask became a symbol of control when worn by a powerful member of a tribe, such as a shaman. Gourds were used as the foundation of the mask face or as an an element such as a beak, mouth, nose, ears or horns. The shaman would usually create the mask to be worn at a special ceremony, although in certain tribes a mask was created by a mask maker who would interpret the shamans dreams. The mask maker using his talents and imagination would then make the mask. D oll H ouses
The whimsical gourd dollhouses are handcrafted, stained, painted and fully furnished with windows and opening door.

  • Basketry From " What's Your Hobby " episode DWH-119 advertisement Pryor keeps baskets wet for more flexibility. Artisan Mary Pryor has modernized Native American basketry techniques. Pryor is so innovative in her use of natural materials, she now teaches basketry to the Agua Caliente tribe in Southern California. Pryor says the activity can be therapeutic, utilizing one's creativity while recycling natural materials into something beautiful:
    • Pryor has developed special tools to facilitate her work style.
    • Basket materials are all natural from plant materials that most crafters would overlook or discard. Pryor uses finished baskets to accentuate green plants and gives them as gifts, but she says the baskets have a variety of uses.
    • Beginners are advised to take a class to learn the fundamentals of basket weaving.
