USA Olympic Basketball Team - The Guards
Many of the top NBA stars have turned down offers to play for the USA because they want to spend their time with their families, are defending themselves in court, are scared the Athens' Olympics will be the target of a terrorist attack or are more interested in spending the summer watching reruns of the Bernie Mac Show Jason Kidd Tracy McGrady Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett have all refused invitations to step on the court for the red, white and blue. The only two guards who have said for sure they'll play for the USA are Allen Iverson and NBA Rookie of the Year, Lebron James . The other guards you'll probably see playing for the US Basketball Team are Stephon Marbury of the New York Knicks Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks
USA Olympic Basketball Team - The Forwards
While several top NBA forwards Iverson and Jefferson have turned down offers to play for the USA at the Summer Olympics , the team's front court shouldn't have any problems dominating the rest of teams in the tournament.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OLYMPIC SPORT OF BASKETBALL STARTED AS YMCA GAME
Hoop contests at Sydney are legacy of James Naismith and his peach baskets CHICAGO
, Sept. 1 - As the world's top athletes come together once again in Olympic competition and the world focuses its attention on the Summer Games at Sydney, few contests will create more universal excitement than those on the basketball court. Basketball is a game that has riveted Americans and millions upon millions around the globe. It has lifted Michael Jordan and countless others to the celebrity stratosphere and inspired such terms as "March Madness," "Final Four" and America's "Dream Team" - and it all began with a YMCA and two peach baskets. In 1891, a YMCA program director named Luther Gulick asked James Naismith, a gym teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., to invent a new indoor sport. Gulick wanted an activity to keep Y staff fit and limber during the winter months. Naismith hung two peach baskets from the bottom of an elevated running track, posted a list of 13 simple rules, and basketball was born. The YMCA students loved the game so much, they couldn't wait for Christmas break and the opportunity to teach it to others in their hometowns. The game quickly gained popularity nationwide. The first official rules were published in January 1892, and the rest is hoop history.

    Farewell to Athens
Every Olympic Games provides us with defining moments. Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.
