Basketball is played on a rectangular court, which has a hard surface (often sprung wood) and a clear height above of at least 7m. The court is marked with a centre circle, having a radius of 1.8m and two "keyhole" shaped zones at each end. The baskets are solid iron rings, 45cm in diameter, from which a net is suspended and behind the rings are mounted blackboards. The ball is pressurised synthetic or leather, weighing a maximum of 650g and with a circumference of 78cm.
The Rules
At the Olympic Games Basketball is played under the International Basketball Federation rules. There are five players per team. Games last 40 minutes, consisting of two 20 minute halves with a 15 minute interval at half time.
Play begins with a "jump ball" where the ball is tossed in the air and two opposing players must leap up in an attempt to tap it to their team. All goals score two points, except for those taken from the free throw line after a foul. These score one point. A long distance throw (outside the key) scores three points. When a goal is scored, the opposition are given a throw-in from the endline for play to resume.

Olympic Sports,
Table of Contents
The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Dream Team antics no different from typical NBA game
Click here for more on this story Latest: Sunday October 01, 2000 04:35 AM SYDNEY, Australia As Kevin Garnett sauntered off the court with the American flag wrapped around his glistening dome as a headband, motioning for the crowd to cheer even louder for him and his teammates, and Vince Carter strutted about throwing punches in the air with Old Glory tucked in his shirt like a bib, one thing was obvious: Other countries may have closed the gap on the U.S. in basketball, but the rest of the world has miles to go before it can match the Americans in prancing, preening and general self-adoration. Team USA wrapped up the gold medal with an 85-75 victory over France on Sunday that was harder than it should have been, and the Americans did it in exactly the manner we have come to expect from them in these Olympics. They were alternately edgy and elegant, athletic and arrogant, sometimes exhilarating to watch and other times maddening to look at. They will be bashed in many quarters for their behavior, for their finger-pointing and trash-talking, for laying elbows in opponents' chests and pounding their own, but the truth the sad truth, if you like, but the truth nonetheless is that they did nothing in Sydney that you wouldn't see in a typical game in the NBA or anywhere else in America.

Carter, others drawing boos for fiery attitude
Click here for more on this story Latest: Friday September 29, 2000 12:42 PM SYDNEY, Australia Vince Carter is clearly more comfortable in the air than on water. The high-flying Dream Teamer took a boat ride around Sydney Harbour for a television interview last week and quickly found his stomach doing more flips than a Romanian gymnast. "I nearly lost my lunch," he said. "Twice." It wouldn't be surprising if USA Basketball officials have been similarly queasy while watching Carter's occasional flare-ups toward opponents. He had minor altercations with Australians Andrew Gaze and Shane Heal during a warmup game for the Olympics, exchanged elbows with a couple of Lithuanian players during a preliminary-round game and went nose-to-nose with Russian guard Yevgeny Pachutin as the teams left the floor at halftime of Thursday night's quarterfinal game, which was won by the U.S. 85-70.
