The university's participation in the Olympics dates back to 1904, when Emil Breitkreutz became the first USC student to compete in the Olympic Games and brought home a bronze medal in the 800 meters. Two Olympiads later, in 1912, the same year Los Angeles Times columnist Owen Bird nicknamed USC's athletic teams the Trojans, USC freshman Fred Kelly won the university's first gold medal, for the 110-meter high hurdles, and launched an unprecedented winning streak for USC. At least one USC athlete has come home with a gold medal in virtually every Olympiad since, and USC claims more Olympians than any other university in the country.

Baseball Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal. Click a link to

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

Crash that killed woman did not involve crimes
By GENE WARNER
Buffalo News Staff Reporter
Erie County sheriff's officials have ended their investigation into a crash that claimed the life of an Arcade mother of two, after charging the other driver with a traffic violation for failing to yield at a stop sign.
Sheriff's deputies said a vehicle driven by Travis Mayer, 23, of East Aurora, went through a stop sign on Hunters Creek Road on June 21 and struck the driver's door of a vehicle driven by Diane L. Hamblin.
Hamblin died in Erie County Medical Center, following the two-vehicle crash that afternoon in the Town of Wales.

Michael Jordan led the way in 1992 The United States have dominated Olympic basketball since the first tournament in 1936, winning 109 matches and losing only two.
That span of success bridges two eras with the event undertaking a massive overhaul in 1992. In April 1989 the decision was made to allow professionals to participate and, as a result, the American squad became a major draw at the Barcelona Olympics. Dubbed the "Dream Team", they featured some of the best-known athletes in world sport, including Larry Bird, 'Magic' Johnson and Michael Jordan - a gold medallist as an amateur in 1984. The USA duly won gold, cruising through the tournament without taking a time-out and winning their matches by an average of 44 points. Coach Chuck Daly described his all-star squad as "majestic".
