United States Sources Appendix 1. Introduction
In this paper, I want to analyse women basketball, its development, its role in today’s American society and its significance in the world of professional sports. At first, I will begin with a short summary of the history of basketball in general, from its original rules to its importance today, both on a recreational and a professional level, where basketball, especially the men’s National Basketball Association (NBA), has become a global sport. In the following chapter, I will show how women basketball came along and developed over the course of time. In the chapter concerning the women’s game it will be possible to show that the way women approached the game in its early days mirrored the way women were seen as a part of society in general, thus requiring a different game than the game played by their male counterparts. I will show in detail why the game played by women had to differ in its early days and what the educational importance of a team game such as basketball was in “correcting the female character”.

    Let the Games Begin
This year the Olympics take place in Sydney, Australia. As anyone with a
rudimentary knowledge of British colonial history knows, Australia began as
a penal colony for the British Empire. To make room for its outcasts,
Britain attempted to clear the land of its inhabitants, human and
otherwise. Just as the indigenous Americans were slaughtered and pushed
from their lands, so were the aboriginal peoples on the fifth continent.
Likewise, many of those who survived the various assaults on their lands and people were "resettled" and their children were stolen. Once stolen

by Kathryn Lee Kemp, Women's Institute on Sport and Education, and Melinda Shelton Let 1996 go down in Olympic history as the Year of the Female Athlete. For the first time in modern Olympic history, women dominated both in events and worldwide recognition. More than 65,000 spectators crammed the stands to see the U.S. women claim a soccer gold medal, while thousands more experienced history as the U.S. claimed the first gold medal ever awarded in softball. And the Georgia Dome rocked with more than 35,000 fans many wearing jerseys emblazoned with their favorite female athlete's name and number who witnessed spectacular basketball as the U.S. swept by Brazil to win the gold medal. The U.S. sent the largest contingent of female athletes 287 and the 3,779 women competitors (out of 10,440 total) represented a 26 percent increase from the previous summer games in Barcelona, Spain. In fact, women in this year's games comprised 34.4 percent of the competitors, compared to 20.6 percent in Montreal's 1976 games. While most people understand the spirit behind Olympic events breaking down barriers many people are unaware of a law that has done just that for this country's female athletes. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 states "no person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid."

Nancy Lieberman's athletic ability was nationally recognized as early as 1974. As a sophomore at Far Rockaway High School in Queens, N.Y. the young Nancy Lieberman was invited to participate in ABAUSA's national team trials for a chance to play on the United States' first ever Women's Olympic Basketball Team. At the tender age of 15, she established herself as one of the top women's basketball players in the country by earning one of only 12 slots on the USA's National Team. One year later Lieberman was named to the USA Team designated to play in the World Championships and Pan American Games where she brought home a gold medal in 1975 and a silver medal in 1979 At age 17, Lieberman was named to the 1976 USA Women's Olympic Basketball Team, which she would compete at the Montreal Games in the first-ever Women's Olympic Basketball Team Competition. Shortly after turning 18, Lieberman became the youngest basketball player in Olympic history to win a medal as the United States captured the Silver Medal under the direction of women's basketball coaching legend Billie Moore.

The Birth of the Basketball Hall of Fame
The inspiration, dedication and courage of its pioneers have been rewarded by a Hall of Fame worthy of a 30-year wait.
Webster's dictionary doesn't have a definition for Hall of Fame. In fact the Hall of Fame means different things to different people. Above all, a Hall of Fame exists to acknowledge and honor the men and women who have risen to the top of their profession.
While it's true that a Hall of Fame can become a state of mind, a Hall of Fame is really a physical structure and a shrine to the people who are fortunate enough to earn induction. The world's only Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Mass., is one of the most technically advanced and architecturally distinctive museums in the world. But the $11.5 million dollar, three-level shrine dedicated to the game's inventor didn't happen by accident. The Basketball Hall of Fame took 30 years to become a reality.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was born on February 17, 1968, on the campus of Springfield College. It was a significant milestone in the world of sports. Never before had basketball had a home to house the greats of the game. When the doors to the Hall of Fame opened on that wintry morning in Springfield, a shrine dedicated to the elite of the game of basketball had become a reality.

PUERTO RICO HERALD Puerto Rico's Accomplishments In Sports By Gabrielle Paese
    August 12, 2005
Shortly after I wrote a column praising Puerto Rico's victory over a U.S. team of NBA players in the first round of the 2004 Olympics, I received the following letter from Herald reader Christopher Young. "Your article perpetuates a willingness to settle for less here on the island of enchantment. The US fielded one of the weakest teams in its Olympic history, and in fact this team performed poorly throughout the games. To hold this up as some great victory for Puerto Rico undercuts the struggle for excellence that Puerto Rico needs to pursue if it is to succeed in this competitive world." Part of what Young says is true. I once sat down to interview a Cuban athlete who had won just about every medal and set every record he could set in his sport. As we talked, we watched two athletes, one representing Puerto Rico, one from the United States, compete against each other. The Cuban, who had no formal education beyond the special sports high school he attended in Havana, said to me: "Do you know why the Puerto Rican lost the match? It's because he doesn't believe he can win. Cubans expect to win, but the Puerto Rican will be happy with third or fourth place." The Cuban went on to say that the athletes of his country and those of the United States are similar because they grow up believing they are champions.
