Donations to the Library and Museum
The IISOH is seeking donations to the Library and Museum on the subject of BASKETBALL
The IISOH is a Pennsylvania non-profit educational, literary and research corporation
under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue code.
Donations are tax deductable of course.

The goal is to obtain a $1 million (one million Dollar) donation from a benefactor in order to establish an endowment for the sport of BASKETBALL. This is a naming opportunity for the benefactor to have perpetual identification with the sport of Basketball and the Institute's educational mission. The endowment would be named by the benefactor with the approval of the IISOH Board of Directors. The Basketball endowment is a permanent trust fund the principal funds are invested by the Institute with only the quarterly earned interest used in the development of the Basketball collections in both the Library and Museum.

BUILDING PLANS
International Institute for Sport
and Olympic History
Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

Born 02/16/1958. Only two Olympians have ever competed in five Olympic games and Oscar Schmidt is one of them. He was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984, but the Nets could not convince him to join their team. He was the top scorer in three of those games, scoring a total of 1,093 points in the five Olympic games (he is the all-time scoring Olympian). He scored more points in his basketball career than any other player, totaling 48,161 (the second leading scorer is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387 points). Schmidt led the Brazilian National Team to an historic upset over the US National Team with David Robinson and Danny Manning in Indianapolis, 1987. Puerto Rico caused a huge shock with a superb 92-73 victory over the USA in the Olympic men's basketball event.
The winners, who were led by 24 points from Carlos Arroyo, outplayed the three-time gold medallists throughout. Elsewhere, Spain's NBA star Pau Gasol hit 21 points as he helped his side to a 83-58 victory over China. Puerto Rico's win lit up the tournament and places a question mark on the USA's ability to claim a fourth title in a row, although they need only finish in the top four of their six-team group to reach the quarter-finals. It was only the third defeat for the Americans in Olympic history after losses to the Soviet Union in 1972 and 1988. Academy: Take the dribbling challenge "No one's in awe," said US forward Lamar Odom. "Everyone wants to come out and play their best game against us. That's the spirit of the Olympics.

    History
Basketball was first played in 1891, at Springfield College, Massachusetts. Its purpose was to keep the students busy during winter months. The story has it that a Canadian physical education teacher, Dr James Naismith, got the idea for Basketball from throwing a scrunched-up ball of paper into a basket. It is said that the first Basketball game in history was played with fruit baskets. The sport developed quickly. Precise rules were formulated and the equipment was improved. Consequently, Basketball won over fans in the USA, and soon after it was attracting attention internationally. It spread and became more popular around the world, leading to the creation, in the year 1932, of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). A Swiss, Leon Bouffard, served as the first president of the newly-founded Federation, with a Welshman, William Jones, as the general secretary. Meanwhile, Basketball was sweeping the world. In 1935, the first European Basketball Championship was organised in Geneva, on outdoor courts. The World Basketball Championships were first held in Buenos Aires in 1950. 1939 ended with Oregon winning the first American college Basketball championships (NCAA). In 1949 the American National Basketball Association – the NBA - was founded. The N.B.A. is considered the premier Basketball players throughout the globe.
