History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith , was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

History
The hall of fame was established in 1983 by the U. S. Olympic Committee. At this point, it exists only on paper. A museum building had been planned, but construction has been held up for lack of funding. No elections were held from 1992 through 2003. With sponsorship from Coca-Cola, the USOC again began looking into the possibility of holding more elections and ultimately building a home for the hall. In 2004, a new class was inducted for the first time in twelve years, with Allstate as the presenting sponsor. The class of ten included eight athletes, one team, and one special contributor. OLYMPIC HISTORY From 1936 until 1972, basketball was about who could beat the United States - and no one did, in seven attempts. Then came the famous game between the US and the Soviet Union and the case of a British official, a US protest and a vault load of medals that some say still remain in a Munich bank to this day. The Soviet Union beat the US again in 1988 in the semi-finals before professionals were allowed in to the Games and the dream teams arrived to claim back supremacy for the US just as the Soviet Union faded into history. The stars of the National Basketball Association, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, were professionals among amateurs. In 1992 they were clearly taking sweets from the mouths of babes. For all their worth, however, the dream teams do not hold the title of most prolific Olympic scorer. That honour goes to Oscar Schmidt, of Brazil, who in 38 games in five Olympic Games has scored 1,093 points, an average of 28.8 points a game.
