The trophy dates back to 1922 when it was donated by the Student's Council of McGill University. Until 1970, the Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union(WIAU) in Quebec and Ontario awarded the Bronze baby to their conference championship basketball team. In 1971, the WIAU was dissolved as a conference and the trophy was retired and returned to the donor, McGill University. McGill students then offered "her" to the Canadian Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union in June of 1972. 84. Basketball History
The first women s basketball team was started just a few weeks later when teachers from HISTORY OF BASKETBALL SUBMIT YOUR SPORTS POETRY! WHAT YOU SAID
http://www.girltech.com/pages/sports/basketballHistory.cfm
Basketball invented in 1891! Dr. James Naismith was a teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. One day, while trying to find a way to interest his bored gym students, he made up the game basketball. In his version, players used a soccer ball (of course they couldn't use a basketball because it hadn't been invented yet). For hoops they used peach baskets nailed to the lower rail of the gym balcony. There were nine players per team instead of five. Oh yeah and they were all male. It didn't take women long to catch on. The first women's basketball team was started just a few weeks later when teachers from a nearby school saw Dr. Naismith's students playing and thought it looked like fun. The next year Smith College in Northhampton Massachusetts started the first women's college team. Basketball was incredibly popular among women in the early 1900s. Women's and men's games were often played together in "double headers." But in 1923 the first lady, Mrs. Herbert Hoover caught wind of the double headers and created a national committee to check it out. The committee was SHOCKED by what they found. Young women athletes playing in front of male audiences!! SCANDALOUS! The practice was stopped. Soon after states began to close women's sports programs. It was believed that women were too dainty for vigorous physical activity. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!!

History Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith a teacher at the YMCA International training school in Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith wanted to relive the boredom of his students during winter physical education classes. He had 2 fruit baskets nailed to both ends of a gym, found a soccer ball and set out some rules witch are some of the basic rules today. Dr. Naismith was born in Canada in 1861, and lived long enough to see the game he invented for the first time. The first game was played in a basement gymnasium. There was a stepladder to retrieve the ball from the fruit basket. Fun Stuff Resources Mail Guestbook Please visit our contest sponsor page http://www.thinkquest.org/ This page last changed on

Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us basketball how it began FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE GAME A game that started with 18 men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Mass., has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith. Under instructions from the head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers, Naismith was given 2 weeks to invent an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. His creation didn't come easily. His first intention was to bring outdoor games indoors such as soccer and lacrosse. These games proved to be too physical and cumbersome. After brainstorming some new ideas, Naismith developed basketball's original 13 rules and consequently, the game of basketball. The new indoor game was played with a soccer ball, peach baskets and nine to a side. This first contest is believed to have been played Dec. 21, 1891.

Basketball History
Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was born from his school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a "duck" off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After serving as McGill's Athletic Director, he moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891 where the sport of basketball was born. In Springfield, Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength. He needed a game that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals.
