Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Women's basketball was among the first three sports the college adopted when it went "fully-coed" in 1980-81. The founding coach was Julie Soreiro, who moved on to head coaching positions at Philadelphia U. and Penn before her current assignment at Colorado College. The program grew throughout the 1980's under such mentors as eventual U.S. Lacrosse coach Sue Stahl, and had many fine players, though lacking a consistent scorer. That description was finally appropriated by Amy Taylor '92, who became Haverford's first 1,000-point scorer. Taylor was a two-time all-Middle Atlantic Conference performer and Haverford captain, a three-time basketball MVP, and the 1992 winner of the Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic award. In her junior season, the program reached .500 for the first time under new head coach Dick Wiseman. Besides Taylor '92, other Fords who found success in life after basketball include Beth Chittick '91, who battled back to play with torn ACLs in both knees to play and is now a veterinarian, and all-Centennial selections Koren Miller '95, Claudette Pirwitz '96, and Colleen Leonard '98. Only injuries kept Claudette and Colleen from reaching the 1,000-point mark, and very few teams could contain these talented and dedicated players.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Many historians believe that the first intercollegiate men's basketball game in the East was Haverford's 6-4 defeat of Temple in 1895. The college did not have a varsity, however, until 1918-19 when intramural player Ben Cooper '18 inspired the program after his graduation. The Fords' men's basketball MVP award is named for Cooper, who later served Haverford as alumni secretary. Playing home games in the friendly confines of the (now Ryan) Gymnasium, Haverford produced its first 1,000-point career scorer in slashing guard Phil D'Arrigo '56, who once scored 100 points (48 and 52) in successive games against excellent opponents.
Alumni Field House opened in 1957 to chants of "Roll, Fords, Roll" as former Penn star Ernie Prudente built a fast-break offense around quality big men. Larry Forman '60, an acrobatic 1,000-point scorer, led HC to wins over Delaware and Navy. Haverford regularly qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs behind 6'8" Hunter Rawlings '66, who was MAC South MVP, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar, and former president of the University of Iowa and Cornell University. The program awakened after a sluggish decade in 1995-96 when senior 1,000-point scorers Jamal Elliott and Chris Guiton helped the Fords advance to the Centennial Conference semifinals. Guiton, a great long-range shooter who later played professionally in Europe, and Elliott, a magical playmaker, both earned first-team all-Centennial during their careers and were co-recipients of The Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic honor.

With a double championship in the 2002 Big West Tournament the UCSB men and women's basketball teams have entered the sports history books. It is the first time with the present Big West lineup that one university has taken both titles in the same basketball season. The men's 60-56 win over Utah State on March 9 was also the first time in the tournament's 27-year history that the Gauchos have claimed that title. On the same day, the women's team took Pacific 64-53 to clinch their side of the Big West competition for the sixth year in a row. As conference winners, both teams received automatic bids to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments, also known as "The Big Dance." The men, who were last invited to the dance 12 years ago, were paired with Pac-10 winner Arizona. The women drew Louisiana Tech. At press time, the men's team had lost to the Wildcats 86-81, and the women were awaiting their game with the Lady Techsters.

In 1990, former All-American University of Utah player, Soni Adams took over the head coaching position at SLCC and guided the Bruins for the next four years. During her tenure she won 77 games and lost 37 while finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and twice as the Region 18 conference tournament runner-up. She helped to develop six All-Conference players, including 1994 Conference Player of the Year, Kami Siddoway. She challenged her players in the classroom as well, coaching five Academic All-Americans. In 1994, Adams left SLCC to coach at Brigham Young University. After three years at BYU, she returned to Salt Lake Community College where she is presently an associate professor and the Department Coordinator in the Health and Lifetime Activities Department.
A former point guard and assistant coach for the University of Utah, Monica Starrett took over the helm in the fall of 1994. In her two years, Starrett won 75% of her conference contests, finishing with two 3rd place finishes and an impressive conference record of 27-9. Her overall record at SLCC was 38-18, and in that time she coached four players to All-Conference status and one Distinguished Academic All-American. In 1996 Starrett left SLCC and is presently the head coach at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, PA.

Irvine Valley College's men's basketball team made a name for itself long before its first game by announcing that Southern California coaching legend Bill Mulligan would head the inaugural 1992-93 team. Mulligan, who is the winningest coach in UC Irvine history, came to IVC just five victories short of 500 career collegiate wins. Mulligan's squads improved each of his three years at IVC. He led IVC's first team to a record of 14-17 and a berth in the Southern California Community College playoffs. The 1993-94 team finished with an 18-15 record. Mulligan's final year at Irvine Valley was the breakthrough season for the young program. All-state center Keon Clark, who later played at UNLV, led the Lasers to a 22-12 record. Mulligan's departure following that season led to an extensive search for a capable successor. Jerry Hernandez, who had been an assistant on Cerritos' 32-2 team, was named the new head coach. In his first year, Hernandez led IVC to a record of 16-17 and the first road playoff win in the program's history. Hernandez made some more history the following year, capturing the program's first Orange Empire Conference title. The Lasers finished the year ranked ninth in the state and fifth in Southern California and had a record of 26-8 overall and 12-2 in conference.
