Q:
can you tell me about the inventor of the basketball? How has the basketball changed since it was first made? How has the game changed since it was first played?
Jason (age 12)

A:
Hi Jason,
According to The Basketball Hall of Fame's history page , basketball began in 1891 at what is now Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (it used to be called the "School for Christian Workers", and they used a YMCA gymnasium). The inventor was James Naismith, and his original 13 rules of the game can be found on the web site. He was given "14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an `athletic distraction` for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter."
You can browse the NBA's rules on the web (there are too many to inlclude here) at the NBA's rules of basketball page . Lots of things like having a special rule for players who shatter backboards probably didn't occur to Mr. Naismith.
The basketball itself has changed only a little over time. The original balls I believe were made of a leather covering over an inflated rubber ball, perhaps with a layer of cloth for stiffness in between. These days you can still buy balls made like that, but there is now a large variety of imitation leathers and plastics that balls are made of. I just went shopping for a basketball a couple of months ago and found a dizzying array of all different models at all different prices at the local discount store.

One team was chosen from each of the eight NCAA districts. Four of them competed in a western tournament and four in an eastern tournament, the western and eastern champions then played off. This system continued until 1950. The championship was expanded to 16 teams in 1951, with 10 conference champions automatically qualifying and 6 at-large teams selected. The move to the "Final Four" came the following year, when the number of regional tournaments was increased from two to four. In 1954, the number of teams increased to 24, with 15 NCAA conference champions and 9 at-large teams. The number varied a little until 1975, when a 32-team bracket was adopted. It has increased twice since 1975 to 48 in 1980 and to 64 in 1985. The number of conference champions automatically qualifying is subject to change from year to year, but under NCAA rules they can make up no more than half the teams in the tournament.

The History of basketball A game that started with 18 men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Mass., has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith. Under orders from the head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers, Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. Naismith's invention didn't come easily. His first intention was to bring outdoor games indoors such as soccer and lacrosse. These games proved too physical and cumbersome. After brainstorming some new ideas, Naismith developed basketball's original 13 rules and consequently, the game of basketball. The new game was played with a soccer ball, peach baskets and nine to a side. This first contest is believed to have been played Dec. 21, 1891.

No other city in the United States can boast its array of basketball history like Lawrence. Although the game was invented in Springfield, Mass., Lawrence is where the game of basketball "came of age." KU has the only college basketball program to be founded by the inventor of the game. With 13 Hall of Famers, 12 Olympians, 11 Final Four visits and two NCAA National Championship teams, it's safe to say that Lawrence is embedded in basketball history. Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball on December 21, 1891 to fill the need for an indoor winter sport. In 1898, he brought the sport to the University of Kansas, becoming the school's first basketball coach. Incidentally, Naismith is the only coach in the school's history with a losing record. Forrest C. "Phog" Allen became KU's second basketball coach when he replaced Naismith in 1908. Allen served for 39 seasons at KU, and to date is the fourth most successful coach in the history of college basketball. In addition, Allen is KU's winningest coach of all time. He was instrumental in the movement to bring basketball to the Olympic games. While Naismith is often called "the father of basketball," he reportedly coined Allen the "father of basketball coaching." Today, Naismith and Allen's presence can be felt each time one enters Allen Fieldhouse, where KU plays its games. Students and fans alike come alive as the "Rock Chalk Jayhawk" chant resonates in the air. In 1996

Commands and Districts were to organise tournaments and planning began for Inter-Service and Inter-Allied Competitions. In 1946 the first Inter-Unit Competitions took place with the finals being held in Fox Gymnasium in Aldershot. March 1949 – the first Inter-Services took place at RAF Halton and the Army were the first winners. The RAF won from 1951 – 53 due to the large amount of US servicemen still present on RAF Stations. The Inter-Services was suspended until 1960 and the RAF continued to win until 1962. 1962 – An Extraordinary General Meeting formed the Aldershot Warriors. Their aim was to play in the London League, enter the National Championship and form the nucleus of the Army squad. WO2 (QMSI) JW Beasor APTC was invited to be the first Coach. The first team included two civilian England Internationals from RAE Farnborough. 1963 – The Army win the Inter-Services and the Warriors win the Southern Area Championship, reaching the National Quarter Finals.
