Now entering her eighth year as the only head coach in the history of Wisconsin softball, Karen Gallagher has most recently led the Badgers to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002. Gallagher has compiled a 192-190-2 record since Wisconsin first took the field in 1996.
UW is coming off its second-straight NCAA tournament appearance and third-straight Big Ten tournament. UW finished the 2002 season with a 31-20 record and 11-6 Big Ten mark. The Badgers’ fourth place finish in league play was a program high.
The 2001 Badgers, seeded fifth in the Los Angeles region of the national tournament, gained an opening-round win over No. 2 seed Fresno State, but fell from contention after losing a pair of contests to San Diego State.
During Gallagher's tenure, several Badger athletes have earned outside recognition. Five of Gallagher's players have garnered All-Big Ten honors while three Badgers have earned All-Mideast Region honors. Pitcher Andrea Kirchberg became the program's first All-American, earning recognition on the Easton All-American squad in 2000. In 2002, Kirchberg earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and second-team All-Region honors.

Rick Hartzell Position:
Director of Athletics
Now entering his seventh year as Director of Athletics at the University of Northern Iowa, Rick Hartzell has overseen unparalleled success and growth for the Panthers athletics program. He was named the university's fourth full-time director of athletics since joining the Division I ranks on August 9, 1999. Take some time to talk to Hartzell, and his passion for UNI athletics - and college athletics in general - comes across loud and clear. His love for the Panthers should be no surprise, as he was a UNI student-athlete during the mid-70s, and was able to come back home in 1999 to lead his alma mater's athletic program into the 21st century. He also believes strongly in the "student" part of the term student-athlete, and understands the importance of shaping well-rounded individuals for a life after competitive athletics are over. In addition, the Panthers have finished in the upper half of the Missouri Valley Conference's all-sports standings each year under Hartzell's direction, including a best-ever finish of second in the 2000-01 campaign. Prior to his arrival, UNI had finished in the upper half of the league all-sports standings just once. UNI has also consistently finished in the top 90 in the annual Director's Cup standings since Hartzell's arrival, a ranking that measures a school's success in various sports in NCAA championships during that athletic year. In 2003-04, UNI finished 80th nationally, tops among schools in the Missouri Valley Conference.

    Director of Athletics
    Sixth Year
(Colorado State '83) The arrival of Mike Thomas on The University of Akron campus in the fall of 2000 launched a five-year overhaul of the look, feel, and pace of the department of athletics. Thomas, one of the nation's most productive young Division I administrators, has directed his attention to the major advancement of every facet of Akron Athletics, all in a successful effort to elevate UA's stature in the Mid-American Conference and on the national scene. Under Thomas' direction, from 2000 to 2004 Akron rose from last place to second among MAC schools in the Sports Academy Division I Director's Cup standings, and simultaneously vaulted UA to second in the MAC Academic Achievement Award rankings, also up from last place in 2000. Akron currently ranks fourth in the conference in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR). Externally, UA also has experienced tremendous growth and greatly maximized revenue opportunities under Thomas, increasing corporate sponsorship levels by 500 percent in four years, and attaining the highest annual giving levels in school history.
