BASIC programming language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
BASIC is a family of high-level programming languages . Originally devised as an easy-to-use programming language, it became widespread on home microcomputers in the , and remains popular to this day in a handful of heavily evolved dialects. It was devised in by Profs. John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz of Dartmouth College BASIC's name, coined in classic, computer science tradition to produce a nice acronym , stands for B eginner's A ll-purpose S ymbolic I nstruction C ode , tied to the name of an unpublished paper by the language's co-inventor, Thomas Kurtz (the name thus having no relation to C.K. Ogden's series " Basic English "). Several versions of the popular Jargon File once claimed that BASIC is a backronym created in the (recent versions have corrected this). Evidence from the original Dartmouth BASIC manual ( ) show this to be untrue, but numerous online dictionaries and reference works on the Internet have now proliferated the earlier Jargon File's error.

Please visit the Blogger Help for more info. true Carl Gundel tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9257415.post-112103187406784724 Someone recently mentioned a new up and coming BASIC language product called KBASIC and asked me what I thought. I went to Google and found the site. What I discovered there was so complicated that it reminded me of programming in Java using the Eclipse IDE. Eclipse is an excellent IDE, at least in the sense that it makes programming in Java practical (possible?). You need all the power of Eclipse because Java is a big, heavy and complicated way to write software. KBASIC seems to emulate Java. Even the style of object orientation presented is very Java-like or C#-like and some syntax is borrowed directly from Java. Why do this? BASIC shouldn't need an industrial strength IDE that is as complicated as the cockpit of an F-15. This is the sort of thing I am trying to avoid with the new BASIC programming language I'm working on. Java is a mountain of rules and exceptions that the programmer must navigate, never forgetting to dot i's and cross t's. Why make a BASIC that emulates Java? This is the sort of thing that caused outcry when Microsoft did away with Visual Basic and replaced it with VB.Net.

History
Basic is a very powerful language as a tool for the novice programmer. Basic allows for a wide range of applications, and it has many versions. However, as long as the emphasis is on the techniques of programming and problem solving, the specific syntax is easy to follow.
Significant Language Features
Basic is a multi-platform language because many basic compilers use the same types of routines. Basic allows:
  • Loops
  • Input from the keyboard
  • Menu Driven Applications
  • System Commands - These are words that make the system perform a specific task immediately.
  • Structured Programming
  • Subroutines
  • Built-In Functions
  • User-Defined Functions
  • Arrays, sorting, and searches
Areas of Application
Basic has many strong points, such as:
  • Easy to learn for beginners
  • Adds powerful additional features for the advanced user
  • Is designed for interactive use rather than batch work
  • Lends itself to learning by hands-on practical use
and is therefore suitable for both the professional and non-professional.
