Baseball, Softball Dropped From the 2012 Olympics
By Stephen Wilson Associated Press Friday, July 8, 2005; Page E01 SINGAPORE, July 8 Baseball and softball were dropped Friday from the Olympics for the 2012 Summer Games in London. Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained.

Italy was the European champion and has baseball roots dating back to World War II.  But they were dominated by potent Japan 12-0 in the Games.
ATHENS, Greece - Greek fans have cheered heartily, despite shaky knowledge of the game, but nonetheless the Olympics are proving that baseball has far to go before it can truly claim to be a global sport. The best teams from South America and Africa were too weak to qualify, and the European teams - supposedly improving - have been battered by more powerful rivals from Japan, Cuba and Australia. Boosters of international baseball hope the glaring gap won't heighten skepticism among some Olympic officials who already question the sport's future in the games. Italy, the European champion with baseball roots dating to World War II, lost to Japan 12-0 and Australia 6-0. The Netherlands, No. 2 in Europe, lost 22-2 Saturday to Australia, and finished the tournament Sunday with a .197 batting average and 7.02 ERA. Worse off, in some ways, was host nation Greece, which has only 1,000 or so serious players and recruited Greek-Americans for the Olympics. Even with U.S. minor leaguers on the roster, the Greeks finished 1-6, beating only Italy.

Official Statement From USA Baseball On The New Olympic Programme For The 2012 Olympic Games Baseball and softball will not be on the programme for the 2012 games.
July 8, 2005 Official Announcement From The IOC Regarding The New Olympic Programme For The 2012 Olympic Games In London, England The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted on Friday to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games. The IOC Executive Board will convene on Saturday to decide whether any of the five candidate sports (Roller Sports, World Squash, Golf, Karate or Rugby) should be put forward to the Session, who will then vote on whether the sport(s) could be added to the list of Olympic sports and then potentially be included on the programme of the 2012 Games. Official Statement From USA Baseball Regarding That Decision "We are obviously disappointed in the decision reached by the General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Singapore," said Mike Gaski, President of USA Baseball. "Our sport has worked tirelessly over the course of the last three years to address the concerns expressed by the IOC in 2002, and felt as though we had done a good job of doing so."

This did have the same effect as allowing professional basketball players to play in the 1992 games, as Major League Baseball was in the middle of the pennant race when the games took place. The United States, however, won the gold medal in 2000.
    Did You Know?
Baseball was a "demonstration" sport seven times between 1912 and 1988. In 1912, the versatile Jim Thorpe led the United States to a victory over Sweden.
Though still regarded by many as an American sport, baseball has taken tremendous strides over the last few decades to become more international. Dominican superstars like Sammy Sosa, Manny Ramirez, and Pedro Martinez dot each major league roster and an increasing number of Japanese, Koreans, and Cubans are thriving in what once was a league with only Americans.

IOC cuts baseball, softball in '12
July 8, 2005 SINGAPORE Baseball and softball were dropped today from the Olympic program for the 2012 Summer Games in London. Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. ''I think they've made a big, big mistake," said Tommy Lasorda, the former Dodgers manager who managed the 2000 US team to the gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Games. ''Baseball is played by all countries now and softball, too. I think that's really going to hurt the Olympics. I don't want to knock the other sports, but I think this is a big mistake. I am very disappointed. ''I was fortunate enough to coach the US Olympic team in Australia. The parks were full at all times. How can they take away a sport like that?" The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five: golf, rugby, squash, karate, and roller sports. That decision will be made tomorrow. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936.

The shortcomings used to justify the removal of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon three years ago exist to varying degrees in 11 other sports: canoe-kayak, archery, rowing, wrestling, shooting, judo, handball, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo and fencing. Even more are still open to question.
There is right now in the IOC a massive lobbying effort underway as federations plead with IOC members to support their sport in Singapore. This is far more than Jacques Rogge ever bargained for when he started this process. More on that later.

Each of the 28 sports contested at the Athens Olympics last summer are busy justifying their existence to the International Olympic Committee in anticipation of a July vote, which could determine their appearance at future Games.
Any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics. Golf, rugby, karate, squash and roller sports are waiting to get in, but no sport will be added unless one is voted out.
