There have been 21 All-Americans, 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the College World Series. With all of this illustrious history, you can imaginee that there have been several "special" players on "The Banks." Ten of those players have been selected to the Rutgers University Olympic Sports Hall of Fame which honors the best of the best in Rutgers' Sports. The baseball program has been represented in five of the last six years - Eric Young (1999), Darrin Winston (2000), Matt Bolger (2001), Jim Monahan (2002) and Pete Zoccolillo (2004).
HALL is one of only two Scarlet Knights to twice earn All-American honors (1961 and 1962) in baseball. During his three letter-winning years (1960-62), the Scarlet Knights were 40-14-1. The former third baseman holds fifth place on the career batting average chart (.384) and second place on the career slugging average chart (.612) in the Scarlet Knight record book. Hall was a 1961 draft pick of the New York Yankees. Hall was the Upstream Award winner in 1962. In 1961, he led the team in hitting (.397), runs (21), hits (31), RBI (30) and made just five errors in starting every game.

The IOC is a Bunch of Commie Bastards!
Friday the International Olympic Committe canceled baseball and softball as Olympic sports! At first, like any true blue, red blooded American, I was pissed! Damn commie pinko bastards! Sonsabitches cancel Baseball?! BASEBALL! Then I read that softball great Lisa Fernandez (Three Gold Medals) laments" I feel one person, the president of the IOC, a person from Europe, has taken it upon himself to ruin the lives of millions, actually billions of women. Millions? Billions? Lives ruined? Oh, please. Now I don't care. Posted by JamesPh. at July 10, 2005 08:48 PM
Comments Yeah, you could see this one coming. The girl's fast pitch games is totally, and I mean TOTALLY, dominated by the Americans. Every other country is competing for silver. Unless your American, there is no interest in watching our girls stomp yet another team into the diamond. I mean really, in the warmup to the olympics, the best college teams in the US were lucky to even score a run against our olympic team. (many of the best were shut out). Our women should have thrown a few games I guess.

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Baseball and softball dropped from London Games
Baseball and softball will not feature in the 2012 London Olympics after they were wiped from the program in a controversial vote on Friday. The two sports failed to win a majority of votes in a ballot of members at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Singapore and became the first sports to be axed from the Games since polo in 1936. Australia won silver medals in both sports at last year's Athens games. The 26 other sports from the Athens 2004 program did poll enough votes, and will remain on the program in London. Baseball and softball's ejection opens the door for two of golf, squash, karate, rugby sevens and roller sports to be added. Baseball Australia's chief executive Don Knapp slammed the decision to dump his sport and questioned the merits of any of the replacement sports. "I would like to see it be a sport that is recognised as a legitimate sport," he said.

... Archives Diamond cutter: IOC drops baseball, softball for 2012 02:53 AM CDT on Friday, July 8, 2005 From Wire reports Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. That decision will be made Saturday. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936. The United States won a gold medal in softball in each of the three Games (Atlanta, Sydney and Athens) it has been a medal sport. The U.S. baseball team did not qualify for the Athens Games. Baseball has been vulnerable because it doesn't bring top major league players to the Olympics. Softball has been in danger because of a perceived lack of global appeal and participation.

October 25, 2002 "This is the first time baseball has been united around the world," said Notari, an Italian whose English is good enough that USA Baseball president Mike Gaski, the head coach at UNC Greensboro, only occasionally had to translate. "One nice letter from MLB and the union, saying in Beijing the best players will be participating, and problem solved," Notari said. "A dream team from America, Japan, Cuba, everyone, will give (NBC Sports president) Dick Ebersol a big TV audience in America. One (Olympic baseball) game on TV with major league players will be more important to help baseball (spread) than any money (MLB) could spend on baseball around the world." Baseball America

Baseball Eliminated From Olympics After 2008 By John Manuel
July 8, 2005 Jacques Rogge finally got what he wanted: baseball and softball out of the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee, following the lead of its president, had secret-ballot voting on all 28 sports on the Olympic program Thursday, and baseball and softball were the only two that failed to receive the majority of votes needed to stay in the Games. So the 2008 Beijing Olympics will likely be the last Games with baseball and softball for the foreseeable future. They are the first sports dropped from the Olympic program since polo in 1936. Baseball became a demonstration sport in 1984 and has been a medal sport since 1992. Cuba has won three of the four gold medals since then, with the U.S. claiming gold in 2000 with a team of minor leaguers led by current Brewers righthander Ben Sheets. And in a surprising follow-up to the vote to drop baseball and softball, the IOC decided not to add any sports to take their place. Golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports were on the waiting list, and squash and karate were the only sports to make the first hurdle and get nominated for inclusion. Both were soundly rejected, however.

Official Announcement From The IOC Regarding The New Olympic Programme For The 2012 Olympic Games In London, England Baseball and softball will not be on the programme for the 2012 games.
July 8, 2005 The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted on Friday to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games. The IOC Executive Board will convene on Saturday to decide whether any of the five candidate sports (Roller Sports, World Squash, Golf, Karate or Rugby) should be put forward to the Session, who will then vote on whether the sport(s) could be added to the list of Olympic sports and then potentially be included on the programme of the 2012 Games. Official Statement From USA Baseball Regarding That Decision "We are obviously disappointed in the decision reached by the General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Singapore," said Mike Gaski, President of USA Baseball. "Our sport has worked tirelessly over the course of the last three years to address the concerns expressed by the IOC in 2002, and felt as though we had done a good job of doing so."
