There have been 21 All-Americans, 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the College World Series. With all of this illustrious history, you can imaginee that there have been several "special" players on "The Banks." Ten of those players have been selected to the Rutgers University Olympic Sports Hall of Fame which honors the best of the best in Rutgers' Sports. The baseball program has been represented in five of the last six years - Eric Young (1999), Darrin Winston (2000), Matt Bolger (2001), Jim Monahan (2002) and Pete Zoccolillo (2004).
HALL is one of only two Scarlet Knights to twice earn All-American honors (1961 and 1962) in baseball. During his three letter-winning years (1960-62), the Scarlet Knights were 40-14-1. The former third baseman holds fifth place on the career batting average chart (.384) and second place on the career slugging average chart (.612) in the Scarlet Knight record book. Hall was a 1961 draft pick of the New York Yankees. Hall was the Upstream Award winner in 1962. In 1961, he led the team in hitting (.397), runs (21), hits (31), RBI (30) and made just five errors in starting every game.

Latest: Sunday October 01, 2000 08:35 PM SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Lee Seung-yuop drove in two runs with a double with two out in the eighth inning to lift the South Koreans to a 3-1 win over Japan in the baseball bronze medal game. The win gave the Koreans their first medal in Olympic baseball. Lee, a 6-foot, 187-pound first baseman, set South Korea's single-season home run record last year by hitting 54. His double off tough-luck pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka became the biggest hit in his country's meager Olympic history. South Korea failed to qualify for the tournament in Barcelona and finished last in the eight-team field in Atlanta. The Koreans shut down their major leagues so they could field a better team in Sydney. It worked. They not only won their first medal, they also beat rival Japan twice - once in the preliminaries, then again with the bronze on the line.

Summary:
This week, Japanese baseball. How has the quintessential American game been transformed to project a Japanese view of life and sport? Baseball's been played in Japan for well over a hundred years, but an American ballplayer once said of the Japanese version: "This isn't baseball. It only looks like it".
Details or Transcript:
THEME
Amanda Smith: On the Sports Factor this today, and a week out from the Big O for Olympic opening ceremony, we’re going to reflect on previous Games openings, and the pressure on Sydney’s to be bigger, glitzier, better.
Also coming up on The Sports Factor: Japanese baseball, and how the quintessentially American game of baseball has been transformed to fit in with a Japanese view of life and sport.
Before that though, to Olympic opening ceremonies. Alan Tomlinson is the Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Brighton, in the U.K. And he’s written critically on Olympic ceremonies, particularly on the way that the narratives presented in some recent openings, have tended to reduce history to a childish sort of level.
Well that may be so, but it seems to me that it’s the opening ceremony that really distinguishes and makes memorable one Olympic Games from another. After all, once the competition starts, the events and the venues are really pretty similar from one to the next.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Discuss with students why they are held, how they originated, when they are held, the participants, the events, and the medals. Ask students to watch some of the Olympics on television. What kind of sports did they watch? Do students think that the sports played today are the same ones played in the very Games? Instruct students to research the very first Olympics in ancient Greece and then hold a class discussion in which students can present their findings to the class.
