    Let the Games Begin
This year the Olympics take place in Sydney, Australia. As anyone with a
rudimentary knowledge of British colonial history knows, Australia began as
a penal colony for the British Empire. To make room for its outcasts,
Britain attempted to clear the land of its inhabitants, human and
otherwise. Just as the indigenous Americans were slaughtered and pushed
from their lands, so were the aboriginal peoples on the fifth continent.
Likewise, many of those who survived the various assaults on their lands and people were "resettled" and their children were stolen. Once stolen

    http://www.dodgers2001.com/multimedia/3d_tour/stdmhistory.html
It began with Dodger President Walter O’Malley’s vision nearly four decades ago and remains one of the crown jewels in professional sports and a landmark to West Coast expansion in Major League Baseball.
The 2000 season will mark the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 39th campaign at Dodger Stadium. Throughout its history, the beauty of the ballpark has awed spectators with a breath-taking view of downtown Los Angeles to the south; green, tree-lined Elysian hills to the north and east; and the purple San Gabriel Mountains beyond.
The 56,000-seat Dodger Stadium has parking for 16,000 automobiles on 21 terraced lots adjacent to the same elevations as the five different seating levels. More than 3,400 trees cover the 300 acres of beautiful landscape, which is maintained by a full-time staff of seven gardeners. Dodger Stadium is one of the better maintained stadiums throughout the country since it is kept in immaculate condition by a full-time grounds crew and maintenance staff. In January 1999, the Dodgers announced a program of investment and limited renovation of Dodger Stadium to help make it more economically competitive with other ballparks across the nation. After the 1999 season, the Dodgers added new field level seats down the foul lines beyond the dugouts and a new expanded dugout section with an adjacent club area. In addition, suites were added on the Club Level to provide amenities that are now available at virtually every other major league ballpark. Original Concept From 1958 Yearbook.

    Summary:
This week, Japanese baseball. How has the quintessential American game been transformed to project a Japanese view of life and sport? Baseball's been played in Japan for well over a hundred years, but an American ballplayer once said of the Japanese version: "This isn't baseball. It only looks like it".
    Details or Transcript:
    THEME
Amanda Smith: On the Sports Factor this today, and a week out from the Big O for Olympic opening ceremony, we’re going to reflect on previous Games openings, and the pressure on Sydney’s to be bigger, glitzier, better.
Also coming up on The Sports Factor: Japanese baseball, and how the quintessentially American game of baseball has been transformed to fit in with a Japanese view of life and sport.
Before that though, to Olympic opening ceremonies. Alan Tomlinson is the Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Brighton, in the U.K. And he’s written critically on Olympic ceremonies, particularly on the way that the narratives presented in some recent openings, have tended to reduce history to a childish sort of level.
Well that may be so, but it seems to me that it’s the opening ceremony that really distinguishes and makes memorable one Olympic Games from another. After all, once the competition starts, the events and the venues are really pretty similar from one to the next.

Baseball at the 2000 Olympics By Joe Clark Australian baseball approached the 2000 Olympics with excitement and anticipation. Together with their astonishing 1999 Sydney Intercontinental Cup success and Major League experiences, many Australian baseballers could claim solid experience at the international level. Dozens were now professionals in numerous nations, but not their own. A formidable obstacle to create a solid Australian defence was for the Australian Baseball Federation to attempt releases for a number of leading pitchers playing in the major league system in the United States. In a process starting the year before with Dave Nilsson arranging to be a free agent for the Olympics, Director Don Knapp and other Australian team officials worked meticulously to ensure the best pitchers Australia had to offer were available and free from their major league clubs to represent their country. 26 August would be the major league club deadline for retaining any players requested for the Olympics. Don Knapp received a fax dated 27 July, 2000, from the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, signed by John Scotti, stating in part: Dear Mr. Knapp:

    Indiana University's Olympic Participants:
IU's Olympic heritage is continuing in terms of competing and coaching. In Athens, six individuals with ties to IU represented the United States, while one former IU athlete represented the host-country, Greece. Here is a brief recap of how each individual fared at the 2004 Olympic Games:
    • Cassandra Cardinell along with former Hoosier All-American Sara Hildebrand finished seventh overall after faltering on their first dive of the finals of the synchro 10-meter event. The tandem scored only a 31.80 on their first dive of the evening before rebounding to finish seventh with a score of 302.22. The tandem scored an 80.58, their top score of the Olympics, on their most difficult dive.
    • Sara Hildebrand wrapped up her Olympic Game competition in the finals of the 10-meter platform with a 10th-place finish overall. She scored 62.37 points on a 2 1/2 reverse somersault in the tuck position on her first dive. Hildebrand then netted 69.12 points on her second dive with an armstand back double somersault with 1 1/2 twists in the free position. In rounds three and four of the finals, Hildebrand missed with scores of 46.53 and 55.68. Once again, the former three-time Big Ten Diver of the Year scored her best dive on her last attempt. In the fifth and final round of the finals, Hildebrand did a back 2 1/2 somersault with 1 1/2 twists in the pike position for 6.5s, 7.0s and 7.5s. Her fifth round total was her only dive over 70 points at 70.38. She finished the event with a score of 484.77.

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Page Updated History of Baseball HISTORY OF BASEBALL WORLDWIDE Baseball is one of the oldest and most popular spectator sports. The game as it is known today developed during the early 1800s amongst children and amateur players. Modern baseball developed in North America, it was influenced by the English game of rounders, which was eventually played in rural and urban communities throughout North America. The first organised Baseball Club was formed in 1842 by a group of young men in New York and called the Knickerbocker Baseball Club. The Knickerbockers developed a set of rules, first published in 1845, which became the foundation of modern baseball. On June 19, 1846, the first official modern baseball game was played between the New York Knickerbockers and a New Jersey team. The Knickerbockers lost, 23-1. The game spread rapidly during the Civil War, as thousands of Union soldiers brought the game to places where they traveled. By the end of the war in 1865, the game had become popular throughout the country. The first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, began in 1869. Touring the country, playing before thousands, Clubs soon formed across the United States. In 1876, eight Baseball Clubs formed the National League and in 1901 the American League began its first season. In 1903, the National League agreed to recognise the American League, and championship teams from each league met in the first World Series.
