The USA are the team to beat Softball was born when baseball players decided to play their sport out of season and took it indoors towards the end of the 19th century.
Slight changes were made and the game has evolved into one of the most popular world-wide sports. Softball's international federation estimates there are more than 50 million registered players around the world. It is rare in the sporting sphere in that men and women can compete on the same side in any of the game's three forms - fast-pitch, slow-pitch and 16-inch slow-pitch. With women unable to take part in the Olympic baseball competition, softball was introduced at the 1996 games in Atlanta in its fast-pitch guise despite never having been played as a demonstration sport. Cynics suggested it was simply to guarantee the USA yet another gold medal and they have not been disappointed.

Olympic Baseball History
On October 13, 1986, The International Olympic Committee gave baseball official sport status, beginning with the 1992 Games in Barcelona. When the first "official" pitch was thrown, on July 26, 1992, at L’Hospitalet Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, history was made and more than 80 years of hard work by amateur baseball officials worldwide had finally paid off. On that day, baseball made its debut as an official Olympic sport. No more demonstration games. This time it was for an official gold medal. The Early Years
Baseball was first introduced as part of the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. In this competition, as well as the next four Olympic appearances, baseball was a one-game exhibition played by athletes already competing at the games in other events. On July 15, a team from the United States downed the Swedish Vesteras Club 13-3, and Olympic baseball was born. After a 24-year hiatus, baseball reappeared as part of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Although other countries had planned to send teams for the tournament, none of them did, so the USA squad split into two teams and played a night game before a world record crowd reported to be 125,000. The World Amateurs defeated the USA Olympics by a score of 6-5.

Olympic Baseball
History
Baseball was a demonstration sport at the Olympics six times: At Stockholm in 1912, Berlin in 1936, Melbourne in 1956, Tokyo in 1964, Los Angeles in 1984, and Seoul in 1988. That's an Olympic record. It finally became a medal sport in 1992. Because the Olympics conflict with the major league season, American teams have been made up primarily of college players. Eight teams enter the Olympic tournament. The host nation qualifies automatically, while the other seven teams qualify through regional tournaments. Two are from the Americas, two from Europe, two from Asia, and the seventh is the winner of a playoff game between the top teams from Oceania and Africa. Olympic competition begins with a round robin tournament. The four teams with the best records then advance to a single-elimination tournament, in which the first-place team faces the fourth-place team and the second- and third-place teams meet in the first round. The designated hitter is used in Olympic competition. In both the round robin tournament and the medal tournament, if a team leads by 10 runs or more after seven innings, the game ends with that team declared the victor.

Just wondering. Did the New York Knickerbockers wear knickers? Was that the origin of baseball's knickers?
Good question. Spalding's Americas National Game suggests so, saying "There is no photo of the players of that team on field, but one almost unconciously uniforms them..." Not compelling. The place to look, I'd guess is Bill James' wife's sections of the Historical Baseball Abstract . I'll have a look when I get home... User:GWO
OK, I've checked, and the answer is no. The Knickerbockers wore normal trousers, and their name derives from the fact that "Knickerbocker" was a generic term for New Yorkers, particularly those of Dutch descent. Kudos to Susie James... User:GWO
Thanks. Good to know that. Of course "knickers" are named after the kind of funny looking trousers the real Dutch Knickerbockers wore, but that would have nothing to do with the baseball team.

1. Politics at the Olympic Games
Grade Level: 3-5
Subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies In August 2004, the world will be watching the summer Olympic Games. Ask students what they know about the Olympics. Discuss with students why they are held, how they originated, when they are held, the participants, the events, and the medals. Although the Olympics are intended to bring the world together in the spirit of sportsmanship and friendly competition, inevitably the Games have also been an arena for political statements and important historical events. For a homework assignment, ask students to write a research paper, make a class presentation or create art project about how sports and politics have melded together and affected the Olympic Games, the United States and the rest of the world. Specific examples include:

The event was a success and what is now the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars was born. In 1994, the event moved to Evansville, Indiana. Pine Bluff, Arkansas hosted the event in 1995 and 1996. The NAABT called Chicago, Illinois the home of the event in 1997 and 1998. Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, a Major League Baseball sponsored organization to promote baseball in metropolitan areas, joined the team in 1998. Beginning in 1999, the NAABT became the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars. Orlando, Florida was the site of the 1999 tournament. The home of the 2000 event was Cooperstown, New York. Joplin, Missouri hosted the 2001 event after hosting the USA Baseball Junior National Team Trials in 1996, 1997 and 2000. Beginning in 2001, USA Baseball combined the function of the Junior National Teams Trials with the Tournament of Stars.

USA Baseball has been operating and selecting our National Team since the mid-seventies, and the team first came into full fruition at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Legendary USC & Team USA head coach Rod Dedeaux was instrumental in organizing the first ever Olympic Baseball Tournament, as eight countries participated at Dodger Stadium. Baseball was given "Demonstration Sport" status, and Japan defeated the heavily favored Americans for the Gold Medal. Every summer since then, USA Baseball has held an invitation only trials at their training facility, to select that year's National Team. Approximately 35-45 of the top collegiate players from the country are invited for a 3-4 day process. New York Olympic History
NewYorkGames.org Report Like its World's Fairs , New York's Olympic bid had its focus outside of Manhattan. With too little space to properly host the world, Flushing Meadows in Queens was the centerpiece of the serious bid for the 1984 Olympics. It was the focal point for other potential bids as well. NYC2012's Manhattan-centric approach is well outside the historic pattern. Indeed, this is only the first effort to host a world event in Manhattan since the disastrous 1892 World's Fair bid . New York was considered the heavy favorite to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas, but the financial backers insisted on using Central Park. The controversy fatally wounded New York's chances, and Congress gave the fair to Chicago. The only event of this nature held in Manhattan was the 1853 Crystal Palace Exposition, though this smaller event (if fit on today's Bryant Park) is not considered a proper World's Fair.

Baseball Often referred to as America's national pastime, baseball made its debut as an official Olympic sport on July 26, 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. Before 1992, baseball had often been seen in various exhibition and demonstration games throughout modern Olympic history. In time, baseball became so popular that it was scheduled to become an official sport at the 1940 Olympic Games in Japan. However, due to World War II, the Games were canceled and baseball was overlooked as an official Olympic sport for the next 52 years. The Olympic Committee formally decided baseball would be an official sport in 1992. Click a link to
