The IISOH is seeking donations to the Library and Museum on the subject of BASEBALL
The IISOH is a Pennsylvania non-profit educational, literary and research corporation
under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue code.
Donations are tax deductable of course.

The goal is to obtain a $1 million (one million Dollar) donation from a benefactor in order to establish an endowment for the sport of BASEBALL. This is a naming opportunity for the benefactor to have perpetual identification with the sport of Baseball and the Institute's educational mission. The endowment would be named by the benefactor with the approval of the IISOH Board of Directors.
The Baseball endowment is a permanent trust fund the principal funds are invested by the Institute with only the quarterly earned interest used in the development of the Baseball collections in both the Library and Museum.

Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

OLYMPIC HISTORY Jim Thorpe The star of Olympic baseball has been Orestes Kindelan Olivares, of Cuba, a member of the winning 1992 and 1996 teams who in Atlanta established a Games record of nine home runs in nine games. One of those home runs was a 159 metre (521ft) hit that helped to dictate that aluminium bats will not be allowed in Sydney; the hit was the longest home run ever at the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, home of one of the top US teams. Cuba, despite the introduction of professionals, remains the team to beat, having won every world championship title since 1974. Much, however, will depend on which professionals from the likes of the US and Japan make themselves available to play for their national teams in Sydney.

Australian baseball coach Jon Deeble maintains his team can still win an historic Olympic medal despite being thumped 11-0 in its final preliminary match. Australia will face Japan on Tuesday for the right to play the gold medal match on Wednesday after qualifying in fourth position for their maiden appearance in the Games play-offs. Australia lost to Canada in a largely meaningless preliminary round match on Sunday night after both teams went into the game with 4-2 winning records and certain semi-final positions. What needed to be determined was the finishing order behind joint gold medal favourites Japan and Cuba, who had secured the top two places. Canada's victory meant they finished third to book a showdown with world champions Cuba in the second semi-final. Australia will be hoping to repeat their surprise 9-4 victory over Japan in the preliminary rounds last Wednesday, and Deeble said the landslide loss to Canada would not be on his players' minds come finals time. Deeble had rested star catcher David Nilsson and other key players from the Canada game to freshen them up for the play-offs.

History of Baseball in the Olympic Games Baseball first took the mound in an Olympic competition as an Exhibition Sport in the 1912 Stockholm Games.
It remained as an exhibition sport at Berlin (1936), Helsinky (1952), Melbourne (1952) and Tokyo (1964).
Throughout its formative years on the Olympic scene, Australia only ever sent a contingent to the Melbourne
games where a reported record crowd of 114,000 witnessed its home country take on the United States of America. In Los Angeles in 1984, Baseball became an Olympic demonstration sport. It made its second appearance
as a demonstration event in Seoul in 1988 where Australia was represented. Becoming an Official Olympic Sport in Barcelona in 1992, it was the Cubans who took the honour of winning
the first ever Olympic Gold Medal, defeating Chinese Taipei in the final. Japan took the bronze medal ahead of
the USA. Puerto Rico, Dominicana, Italia and Espana made up the respective minor placings.
atop the podium with Japan second and the USA third. Nicaragua finished a credible fourth while the
Netherlands, Italia, Australia and South Korea made up the remaining places.

The USA enjoyed a rare victory in Sydney in 2000 Baseball had to bide its time before joining the Olympic family of sports.
The basics of bat and ball date back centuries, but the first record of a form of baseball was documented in 1839 when General Abner Doubleday organised a game for his troops. Within six years Alexander Cartwright had founded the first club - the New York Knickerbockers - and rival teams started sprouting up in the 1870s when the first professional league was formed. Baseball made its Olympic bow in 1912 but had to wait 80 years before it was granted medal status. In all the sport was played at demonstration level on six separate occasions - seven including the Finnish baseball exhibition in Helsinki in 1952. In 1912, an American team consisting of players from other Olympic disciplines took the honours.
