(AP) The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, now known as Minor League Baseball, was formed on September 5, 1901 from a meeting of Minor League executives at the Leland Hotel in Chicago. The President of the Eastern League, Patrick T. Powers, was elected as the first President of the NAPBL. Fourteen leagues and 96 clubs were members during the first season in 1902. The first NA office was established in Auburn, NY, under President Powers and successfully run by Secretary-Treasurer John H. Farrell. By the time Powers left office in 1909, there were 35 leagues and 246 clubs. In 1910, Michael Sexton became President. In his first few years, wars between the Major Leagues and the outlaw Federal League hurt the Minors. The Federal League raided top Minor League teams, as well as National and American League teams, for players and territory. Sexton led a fight at the 1914 Winter Meetings to fight off a bid from radicals for the Minor Leagues to desert the Major Leagues and back the Federal League. For 22 years, Sexton presided over the Minor Leagues, leaving at the height of the Depression in 1932. But during his time, peace was restored and the Minor Leagues began to flourish.

is the recognised National Governing Body of Baseball in Ireland and is responsible for the development and promotion of baseball on the island of Ireland.
Adult Baseball
Adult level Baseball in Ireland began to formally take shape in 1995. Visiting coaches from Major League Baseball International (MLBI) provided the much needed instruction to adult players, most of who had only played recreational softball but wished a greater competitive and athletic challenge.
In 1996, with the assistance of MLBI coaches, Ireland played in its first international competition, the European Championships held in Hull, England. This international experience generated a great deal of interest in Baseball and has ultimately resulted in a ten team Adult League being formed with seven teams in Dublin, two in Belfast and one in Greystones, Co. Wicklow.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Various versions of baseball were played at Haverford almost since its founding in 1833. In the 1880s, teams began to play a couple of games a year against outside opposition and once defeated Villa Nova College, as Haverford's Main Line neighbor was then called. During this period, Haverford's only full-fledged major-leaguer, Bill Lindsay '06, graduated and went on to play for the Cleveland Naps, precursors of the Indians. Not until after World War I did America's National Pastime become a full-fledged varsity sport at Haverford, its formal recognition delayed by the great focus on cricket at Haverford and in Philadelphia long after most places had abandoned it.
Haverford broke into varsity baseball in a big way with an inaugural victory over the mighty University of Pennsylvania in 1916, behind hurler George Haines Buzby '18, whose name graces the Haverford's baseball MVP trophy today. The sport flourished in the 1920's under the leadership of Roy Thomas, a former Philadelphia Phillies regular. In the late Twenties, pitchers Ken Kingham '29 and Henderson Supplee '30 regularly blanked opponents. Supplee skipped his senior year to join Connie Mack's world champion Philadelphia A's as the team's "26th Man."

By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's "national pastime." Alexander Joy Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders become popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball. The first recorded baseball game in 1846 when Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club. The game was held at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1858, the National Association of Base Ball Players, the first organized baseball league was formed.
