Minnesota Baseball History By Stew Thornley
Author of On to Nicollet: The Glory and Fame of the Minneapolis Millers
for the Minnesota Twins Media Guide The Millers lasted a year longer than the Saints but were among four teams dropped from the league when Johnson finally reached his goal, turning the Western League (by this time renamed the American League) into a major league in 1901. Both the Minneapolis Millers and St. Paul Saints became charter members in a new minor league, the American Association, that began in 1902. Managed by Mike Kelley, who also played first base in an infield that included future Hall-of-Famer Miller Huggins at second, St. Paul got off to a good start, winning pennants in two of its first three years in the Association. The Millers had a rockier beginning in the Association, finishing seventh (out of eight teams) their first two years. But the Minneapolis club came alive in 1910. Under a new manager, Pongo Joe Cantillon, the Millers rattled off three consecutive American Association championships. Minneapolis and St. Paul played in the American Association for 59 seasons. The Millers ended up with the best winning percentage of all the teams to play in the league over that period. The Saints had the second-best record. In addition, the Minnesota teams shared the Association record with nine pennants apiece.

By Heather Baggett
TALLADEGA - Catching a homerun ball at a baseball game is always a thrill for children. An even bigger thrill is catching one hit by a legendary player.
One local woman has a ball hit by arguably the greatest player of all time.
Jeanette Kelly has a homerun ball hit by Babe Ruth. Her late husband Joseph caught it in Yankee Stadium in 1934. He was only 7 years old.
Kelly’s father, who was a performer on Broadway, got to know Ruth because they frequented the same places, Ms. Kelly said. Since his father was a big Yankees fan, he went to a lot of the games and oftentimes took his son along.
In 1934, the young Joseph Kelly was fortunate enough to catch a ball hit by debatably the most notable player to ever play the game. Kelly’s wife said she did not know who the Yankees were playing or the date of the game at which he caught the ball.
Kelly kept the ball, and his father had Ruth and other players sign it later. Since Kelly has passed away, his wife now has the ball.

Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Ron Kline for his first career four-bagger on this date in 1959. Stretch would finish his career with 521 career home runs, 469 of them as a Giant (fourth in franchise history behind Ott). Twenty-seven years and a day later, McCovey was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
August 3
Clark Drives in Six in Win: Despite only two hits, Will Clark delivered six RBIs that powered the Giants to a 12-7 victory over the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium on this date back in 1993. The Thrill hit a 3-run shot in the fifth inning off of Padres starter

The earliest known mention of baseball in the United States is a Pittsfield, Massachusetts bylaw banning the playing of the game within 80 yards of the town meeting house. The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the Knickerbockers of New York City . The club was founded on September 23 , as a social club for the upper middle classes, and was strictly amateur until its disbandment. The club members, led by Alexander Cartwright , formulated the "Knickerbocker Rules", which in large part deal with organizational matters but which also lay out rules for playing the game. One of the significant rules was the prohibition of "soaking" or "plugging" the runner; under older rules, a fielder could put a runner out by hitting the runner with the thrown ball. The Knickerbocker Rules required fielders to tag or force the runner, as is done today, and avoided a lot of the arguments and fistfights that resulted from the earlier practice. Writing the rules didn't help the Knickerbockers in the first competitive game between two clubs under the new rules, played at Elysian Fields in

In the earliest days, the American version of rounders was known as 'Town Ball'. Rules varied from town to town and there was no widely accepted way to play. The slow evolution of rounders to today’s game of baseball, as we know it now, became evident in 1845 when Alexander Cartwright published the first set of rules. Several of these rules are still used in baseball today.
Town Ball– The Predecessor of Baseball Town ball slowly evolved into the game of baseball, as we now know it. Town ball is a direct descendent of the British game 'rounders' which is a descendent of English cricket
During the early 1800's the game of town ball was played everywhere in America. Town ball started as a schoolyard game for children that eventually grew into a sport for adults as well. The rules of town ball were made up by the locals of each town and varied widely from one location to another. In formal town ball play, wooden pegs were used for bases . In informal play, rocks or anything that was available were used for bases.

The 1919 Chicago White Sox were, undeniably, a great team. But as they faced the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, rumors swirled that a fix was in. The Sox lost the best-of-nine series, five games to three. A year later on Sept. 29, 1920 Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte told a grand jury that the series was fixed. The Chicago Herald and Examiner reported that after Jackson left the courthouse, "one little urchin in the crowd grabbed him by the coat sleeve.
" 'It ain't true, is it?' he said.
