Dirk Katstra was named the executive director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation in 1996 after serving for four years as director of annual giving for the Foundation. In 2003, his role expanded in the athletics department to include supervision of Marketing and Promotions, the Ticket Office and the Media Relations.
Katstra, from Stilwell, Kan., is a 1991 graduate of UVA with a degree in sports management. A member of the Cavalier basketball team from 1987 to 1991, Katstra played on three NCAA Tournament teams at Virginia and was a senior captain on the 1990-91 squad. The Cavaliers advanced to the finals of the 1989 NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament against Michigan during Katstra's sophomore season.

We have launched the John Paul Jones Arena campaign, and this year's annual campaign is especially critical for the overall growth and stability of the program. Our goals for 2005 are ambitious. Rick Wolff was drafted after his junior year at Harvard and played in the Detroit Tigers minor league system. He also was the head baseball coach for eight years at Mercy College (Dobbs Ferry, NY) where several of his teams were nationally-ranked and several of his players went onto professional careers. From 1990 to 1995, he worked as a roving coach for the Cleveland Indians, where he specialized in performance enhancement skills and the mental approach to the game of baseball.
Wolff's degrees are in psychology, both from Harvard and Long Island University. A popular speaker to community and school groups on sports parenting, he and his wife, Trish, have three children, all of whom play sports in school. His latest book, COACHING KIDS FOR DUMMIES, was being published in Spring, 2000.

Preventing Kids' Sport Injuries

(CBS) Team sports are a great way for kids to get fit and have fun at the same time. But with kids' sports and injuries on the rise, the question is: Are we pushing our kids too much?
Certified athletic trainers and orthopedic surgeons have observed an alarming increase in adult-type athletic injuries among children and adolescents. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 3.5 million sports-related injuries in children under age 15 were treated in the U.S. in 2003.
And the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons are taking this topic pretty seriously. They've just launched an ad campaign. Their public service announcement says: "What will they have longer: their trophies or their injuries?"
Just how serious are sports injuries among kids?

Team Makita Suzuki's Broc Hepler will be a guest instructor at the March 6th event; curriculum will cover training, nutrition, mental preparation, riding tips and concussion management Murrieta, Calif., (February 22, 2005) – UPMC Sports Medicine will host its first Motocross Training Mini-Camp on Sunday, March 6th. The mini-camp is one of several motocross-specific activation activities for Broc Hepler's 2005 endorsement deal with the sports medicine and performance leader. The curriculum for the mini-camp will include motocross-specific training techniques, injury management and prevention, deconstructing current motocross training myths, nutrition, mental training, riding tips and techniques and concussion management. “I'm really excited to participate in this mini-camp,” said Hepler. “This is the first mini-camp of its kind for motocross, and I think people will definitely learn a lot from the professionals at UPMC Sports Medicine. Bryan Finch Bryan graduated from University of Oklahoma in 2000 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Therapy. In college, he was very active in Oklahoma's intramural program, serving as IM chairperson for dorm teams. He worked as a physical therapist in sports and outpatient setting for Oklahoma Center for Athletes in Oklahoma City, OK where he treated athletes from high school to college and professional levels. Bryan volunteered at the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial Marathon, as well as coordinated and coached company basketball teams for the city-wide Corporate Challenge Competition.
