Baseball Steroid Hearings

"Since steroid use is not illegal, you would think that these athletes and baseball executives would have no problem testifying."

Former baseball star Jose Canseco, who admits to using steroids for most of his career, has agreed to testify before Congress. (CBS)
New York Yankee Jason Giambi is one of several baseball players who's declining an invitation to appear before Congress. (AP) (CBS/AP) With Congress and Major League Baseball embroiled in a fight over steroids, the chairman of a House panel said Thursday that all major U.S. sports leagues should work toward a single testing plan. "Our elite athletic organizations, both professional and amateur, should establish uniform, world-class, drug-testing standards that are as consistent and robust as our criminal laws in this area," said Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla. "Nothing less should be tolerated." Stearns' comments came at the opening of a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee he chairs. Labor lawyers from Major League Baseball and the National Football League were to testify later.

Professional sports are currently going through a transition (much like professional wrestling did in the 90’s) where it is good to be bad. Recently, it has become marketable for professional athletes to have a bad attitude and go against the grain. Controversy creates publicity, which generates revenue for all parties involved. Often this profitability grants the troublemaking superstars immunity to the consequences of their actions.
Anyone who follows the NFL or professional sports in general should be well aware of the recent situation with Keyshawn Johnson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To summarize, Keyshawn (known by his teammates as Me-shawn) was de-activated by the team as a result of a myriad of actions that have become commonplace throughout the career of this highly talented wide receiver. Among those actions were missing team meetings, missing workouts, and declaring directly to coach John Gruden during the season his preference to play elsewhere the following year, basically putting his own needs and wants ahead of those of the team. Well, he got his wish, just a little sooner than expected. In an unprecedented move and one that I hope encourages other teams to do the same, Gruden and GM Rich McKay basically fired Johnson from his job as their starting wide receiver and resident troublemaker.
