Department History
Athletics at St. Thomas College had an early and precarious beginning. On Thanksgiving Day 1892 St. Thomas College defeated Carbondale high school in the first recorded football game. In 1893 a college Dramatic Society production was held to raise money for the library and to buy football uniforms. There appears to have been a couple games played in 1893 as well, but there was no regular schedule.
Right before WWI Bill Moor e effectively became athletic director at the College. For 12 years he coached all sports and organized a few. A basketball team was organized, after a few false starts, in 1916-1917. The team went undefeated during the 1921-22 and 1922-23 seasons and had a 40 game winning streak that ended in January 1924. A base ball team had been fielded for one game in 1907 but quickly dissolved. A few similar one game seasons followed until Moore organized a team in 1916. The team went undefeated in 1917 but was then dropped until the 1920s.
In 1942 The University passed from Christian Brother hands into Jesuit control. St. Thomas College had become the University of Scranton in 1938 but the athletic teams retained the names of Tommies or Tomcats.

The first full football schedule occurred in 1898 when the “Tommies” went 8 and 1 and shut out all of their opponents, after losing the first game of the year 6-5 to Keystone Academy. In 1908 the Tommies went undefeated and unscored upon. But in 1911 football was dropped. It was reinstalled in 1916 and remained a full time sport until 1960. Softball Coaching Participants JENNIE FINCH
USA Softball
Jennie Finch, softball's Olympic gold medallist and heartthrob, spends a lot of time in airports these days. Between pitching for the Chicago Bandits, traveling overseas with the U.S. softball team and visiting family members across the country, she hardly has a minute to relax. But it's all part of her longtime dream to play (and dominate) professional women's softball.
The star pitcher made People magazine's 50 most beautiful people list in 2004 and was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in July. She has become the face of softball, a role model for young women and a sex symbol to rival Anna Kournikova.
Finch has been a superstar softball player since she started playing the game and has been honored with many awards including in her early career being named the number one high school recruit by Jump Magazine. She is one of the most decorated players in NCAA softball history. A two-time recipient of the Honda Award, presented to the nation’s best softball player, Finch holds the NCAA title for consecutive wins, with 60. A two-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, she was a three-time first-team All-American. Her blazing fastball and dangerous rise ball aided her to a 4.21 strikeout to walk ratio as a Wildcat. In addition to being one of college softballs most dominating pitchers, Finch also ranks seventh in Arizona history with 50 career homeruns. Finch was a member of the 2004 Olympic Softball team that won gold in Athens. She also won gold with Team USA at the 2003 Pan American Games, and competed with the team at the ISF World Championships, and the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier.
