An early civil rights organizer and leading confidante of Martin Luther King Jr. , he was pastor of the West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. throughout his civil rights career (196190). He was King's chosen successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (196877). Although he was a competent leader, the SCLC never regained the influence it had under King. He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for Andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.

Biography Downhill skier Wade Bishop was on skis at age 3 while growing up in Winter Park, CO. Twenty years later, he came back from two broken wrists and a smashed nose to win the ’03 NorAm Cup DH title. Last year he committed himself to improving his Super G skills and ended up on the NorAm Cup podium twice in SG. He also made his first start on the World Cup last season. Bishop likens skiing to one of his favorite sports: golf. “One little hitch in your technique and it’s over,” he explained.
Update
"It was an up and down year. I look forward to skiing more World Cups," Bishop said, referring to the frustrations of last season. He won a NorAm downhill after being third the previous day at Lake Louise, and raced in a half-dozen Europa Cups in addition to his first World Cups. His preseason goal was to boost his overall conditioning ("a level of fitness that I haven't had in the past - Bigger, Stronger, Faster") so he's better equipped to deal this winter with the big hills of the World Cup.

Baseball qualification gets extra round
Added phase would have given U.S. another chance for Athens
LAUSANNE, Switzerland - A new round was added to baseball's qualifying tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a system that would have given the United States a second chance to get to the Athens Games. Qualification for the eight-team Olympic baseball competition will now take place in two phases, the International Baseball Federation said Thursday. Also, qualification will now be based on the results over an entire tournament, with single-elimination games no longer part of the format. This is a significant change in light of the U.S. loss to Mexico in the quarterfinals of the Olympic qualifier in Panama in 2003. The United States was ousted from the tournament despite having a 3-0 record at the time of the game while Mexico was 0-3. "We believe it is more in keeping with traditional baseball competition where advancement in a tournament is built upon the overall strength of your team, not just the ability to win or lose a single game," USA Baseball executive director Paul Seiler said. "We also believe it will produce the strongest Olympic baseball field to date." In the first phase of qualification, two teams from the Americas, one from Asia and one from Europe will qualify through continental competitions to be completed by October 30, 2007. Those four countries and host China will qualify automatically. The remaining three spots will be decided by an eight-team event after the first round of continental qualifying.

U.S. domination in Athens may not have helped sport's case

The U.S. softball team, led by pitcher Lisa Fernandez, steamrolled through the competition in Athens.
ATHENS, Greece - The story going around is that softball's place in the Olympics is in jeopardy and that the Americans made things worse by coming to Athens and beating everyone in sight. International Softball Foundation president Don Porter has heard it often, but shrugs it off. He knows the people saying it aren't the ones that matter most - and what those folks are saying is a lot more encouraging. "In talking with IOC members and others that are a lot closer to the situation, I think our sport is in good shape," Porter said. "I'm optimistic." The softball-is-in-trouble notion began two years ago, when the sport was among three called on the carpet by the International Olympic Committee. Along with the federations of baseball and modern pentathlon, softball's governing body went to a meeting in Mexico to explain why the sport should remain in the Summer Games after Athens. But the IOC changed gears. Earlier this summer, they decided instead to re-evaluate all 28 sports, each facing the same criteria. A vote will be taken at a general session in Singapore next July.

This delay is due to the following: 1) extended winter patterns in the weather; 2) poor field conditions; 3) a large increase in registrants (we are up to 150 kids); and 4) Easter being next week. As for the 5th/6th grade boys, we need to get them going as they have a demanding set of games with the first one on 4/2. Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron One of the greatest hitters of all time, Henry Louis Aaron (1934- ) made baseball history when he broke Babe Ruth's longtime record of 714 home runs. Aaron began playing sandlot baseball as an adolescent in Alabama and later played shortstop for one of the best Negro League teams, the Indianapolis Clowns. A quiet, self-assured superstar and unshakably consistent player, Aaron eked out his record, run-by-run, throughout his career with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. When his scores threatened to obliterate Ruth's record, Aaron endured racial abuse and heated media attention. He maintained absolute composure under the tremendous pressure and steadily closed the gap for a major statistical triumph. When he retired from baseball in 1976, he had 755 home runs to his name. Ernie Banks With the addition of Ernest Banks (1931- ) to the roster of the Chicago Cubs in 1953, this cornerstone franchise ended its long policy of segregation. A U.S. Army veteran, Banks was discovered by major league scouts shortly after completing his military service. He proved himself to be an invaluable team member with strong fielding and superlative hitting skills. Between 1955 and 1960, the amiable "Mr Cub" hit more home runs than any other player in the major leagues and became the first man to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. With 512 career home runs, Banks is one of the top home run hitters in the history of the National League. By the end of his 19-year career, he was voted "The Greatest Cub Ever" by adoring fans.

U.S. gets another strong pitching performance
Click here for more on this story Latest: Wednesday September 20, 2000 12:08 AM Kurt Ainsworth allowed a run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. AP BLACKTOWN, Australia (AP) The best thing about the U.S. Olympic baseball team? All of those high draft picks in the rotation. Though not yet ready for the major leagues, they're getting the United States ready for some medal-round games. Kurt Ainsworth settled down after a shaky first inning and shut down a lineup spiced with former major leaguers, leading the unbeaten United States to a 6-2 victory Tuesday against the Netherlands. "People are treating us as the underdogs," said Ainsworth, who added that this was the most important game he has pitched. "All the teams are good, but we are here to win gold." Ernie Young, a 31-year-old outfielder, doubled home a pair of runs and hit a solo homer, the best part of an offense that had trouble with a junkball pitcher.
