Settlements and farmsteads
Most of the rural inhabitants live in their own detached houses. There are a lot of prefabricated houses, turned out by the Alytus construction plant, which look very much alike. Recently, however., farm houses have become more varied, a considerable number of them being built according to individual and rather original projects. As a rule, in rural settlements dwelling houses face the street or the road. There is usually a front garden planted with decorative shrubs and flowers. Sometimes we can also see a drive leading to a garage under the house, but this is only in houses built quite recently. At the back there is usually a fenced farmyard with an outbuilding where the farmer may keep a cow, several pigs, some poultry and the fodder. More often than not there is a chain dog, the traditional guard of one-family houses. While traveling along the roads of Lithuania one can often see lonely oaks or groups of untended fruit trees growing in the middle of a vast field. They are the remnants of the former farmsteads abandoned by their owners many of whom have forcibly been moved to the settlements against their own free will. Here and there one can still spot a lonely house the owners of which, for better or worse, have been allowed to stay in their old place of residence. Today typical specimens of ethnic farmsteads can be seen in the open-air Country Life Museum at Rumsiskes, founded in 1966 off the Vilnius-Kaunas highway. There are also several old villages and farmsteads which have been conserved and protected by the state. There we can see the traditional Lithuanian scenery which has been cherished and cared for by several generations and without which we could not understand the spiritual and material culture of the Lithuanians.

Photo by Neil Larson. The town fortunate enough to have all three schedules is New Paltz in Ulster County. There has been no secret to its existence. It is a town document and a copy of it has been used for years by local historians and Realtors at the Huguenot Historical Society Library. However, to my knowledge, it was not until the current project to recover and analyze the research value of the information contained in the assessment lists that this extraordinary data was looked at in a systematic way. Many interesting things were discovered about the architecture of these towns and the region, but you will have to wait for the upcoming publication of the book to read about it. I am going to use the space here to reveal what the assessments made in the Direct Tax have to tell us about Dutch barns. The immediate thing to recognize on the New Paltz B Schedule is that it actually refers to certain barns as "Dutch barns." Since plan dimensions are included in the entries (due to the fact that the 88 barns so classified all have the square footprint on which we now rely to distinguish Dutch barns), we can be confident that historic and current usage refer to the same buildings. This early occurrence is significant on at least two levels. First, it documents the use of the term to the late eighteenth century. This is a wonderful thing to see in print, to discover that the term goes back before John Fitchen's

Economics of Farm Storage Buildings
John Worley, Extension Engineer and William D. Givan, Extension Economist It is widely accepted that storing farm equipment under a shelter is better than storing it outside and that hay stored in a barn is better than hay stored in the field. But how can we determine just how much a farm storage building is worth? The answer is different for every individual operation, but there are some guidelines that will help you make an intelligent decision about whether or not you can afford a building (or afford not to have one). The following is a discussion of the costs and benefits of owning a building, along with some example calculations. In each example, you are given the opportunity to substitute your figures, which might more accurately reflect your local markets and conditions.
Cost of Owning A Building
The cost of a building depends on many factors including the amount of side enclosure, type of floor, height, and type of construction. Costs also vary depending on steel and wood prices. For an example calculation, we will use a pre-engineered steel building 50 by 100 feet with 14 foot eave height (vertical clearance). The building is open sided and has a dirt floor. It would be suitable for storing equipment or hay.
Example: 50' by 100' open shed.

MEMORANDUM: Individual Permit Flexibility for Small Landowners
In order to clearly affirm the flexibility afforded to small landowners under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, this policy clarifies that for discharges of dredged or fill material affecting up to two acres of non-tidal wetlands for the construction or expansion of a home or farm building, or expansion of a small business, it is presumed that alternatives located on property not currently owned by the applicant are not practicable under the Section 404(b)(1) Guidelines. Specifically, for those activities involving discharges of dredged or fill material affecting up to two acres into jurisdictional wetlands for:
  • the construction or expansion of a single family home and attendant features, such as a driveway, garage, storage shed, or septic field; the construction or expansion of a barn or other farm building; or

Materials and General Instructions For boxes erected outside the best materials are 1" thick rough-cut western cedar, cypress or redwood. All these withstand weathering. Boxes, which are placed inside buildings, can be made of less expensive pine or plywood. If a wood preservative or paint is used, apply it only to the exterior of the box. When constructing closed boxes, the size of entrance holes and their height above the floor of the box are important and the dimensions given should be used. Proper hole size and placement will allow the birds to come and go freely and still keep a raccoon from entering or reaching the young. Closed boxes should have the roof, or one side, hinged, providing access to the inside for cleaning and maintenance. Roofs can be shingled for added protection from the weather. Be sure nails and screws used in construction do not protrude inside the box. Generally, boxes should be mounted so the holes face southeast. In new or freshly cleaned boxes a layer of pine shavings should be applied to the floor which will help contain the eggs and make incubation easier. Use only a one-inch thick layer, no more, as eggs can get lost in shavings that are too deep. DO NOT use cedar shavings or sawdust. If ingested along with food, cedar oil can be dangerous and sawdust can be harmful to nostrils and eyes of the young birds.

The Farm Building Plan Service provides drawings for the construction of structures and equipment used in Alberta's Agriculture industry. Plans and design information are available for a wide range of livestock production building, storage structures, building components and equipment. Most plans are produced by the Canada Plan Service, a co-operative venture of the federal and provincial departments of agriculture. A few additional plans have been developed by Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development for specific Alberta requirements.
Each plan is described in a leaflet that outlines the main features of the plan, including a pictorial drawing of the floor plan, management information and some construction details. For some items the leaflet contains all the construction information, in which case large plans are not provided. The Edmonton office has a complete set of these leaflets as well as the more popular plans.
The large scale plans are available in limited quantity. They can be ordered by mail from Edmonton, but it is also preferred to contact an agricultural engineer in any of the offices listed on the order form. The agricultural engineer can offer planning and design assistance, or explain construction details or modifications to a particular plan.

A farm storage building is a good investment for many agricultural operations. The building can be used to store hay, machinery, or both. As a result, the value of these commodities will be worth more than if left in the field. However, does the increased value of stored hay or machinery offset the cost of owning a building? The following discussion examines the costs and savings of owning a farm storage building. Return to Table of Contents
    Cost of Barn Storage
Barn storage is the best method for preserving hay and protecting machinery. However, a storage structure can be expensive to build. Initial building cost depends on several factors including building style, material costs, and labor costs. Initial cost of construction can range from $4.00 per square foot for an open-sided barn to over $6.00 per square foot for a fully enclosed barn. Example 1.

The researchers are working with the Environmental Protection Agency , the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Pork Board to ensure that animal farms are as odor-free as possible and safe for animals and people, said Brian Richert, animal sciences professor. The studies revolve around testing different diets and management practices to determine how they contribute to aromas and other air and water pollutants from animal waste. "Large livestock facilities don't fall under current emissions standards because no baseline data exists for such operations, and there is even less information on the odor issue," said Richert, one of the people leading the studies. "This is because it's very difficult to do measurements." Richert and his co-investigators, including agricultural and biological engineering professor Albert Heber, said the 15,500-square-foot, 12-room Swine Environmental Research Building can hold 720 hogs and replicate actual conditions at a working farm. The only facility of its kind in the United States, the Purdue farms barn began operation this summer. The scientists said it will solve the issue of gathering emissions data.
