T HE A MERICANIZATION OF THE B ARN THOMAS C. HUBKA A barn is a farm building for sheltering, processing, and storing agricultural products, animals, and implements. Although there is no precise scale or measure for the type or size of an agricultural building that constitutes a barn, the term barn is usually reserved for the largest or the most important structure on any particular farm. Smaller or minor agricultural buildings are often labeled sheds or outbuildings and are usually used to house subordinate activities. Each immigrant group that settled in America brought an agricultural heritage, and most groups brought some form of barn-building tradition. Depending upon the number of settlers, the region they occupied, and, most importantly, the date of settlement, each immigrant group contributed to the development of American agriculture and left its individual mark on the cumulative record of the American barn. The barn-building heritage of most groups, such as the Dutch, Swedes, and later Ukrainians and Italians, was quickly absorbed into a larger American mixture to become a national tradition. The absorption of the various European building techniques into a national tradition was not uniform, but was dominated by English and Germanic ideas. From the earliest settlement period until the late nineteenth century, the combined influence of English and German traditions dominated the malting of the American barn. The second major barn-building tradition was imported by German settlers, primarily to southeastern Pennsylvania. While never as numerous as the English, the Germans refined their previous Old World traditions to create various forms of the Pennsylvania forebay and bank barn. Even before the American Revolution, the Pennsylvania German barn represented the most advanced type of barn construction and farming system and became widely publicized and influential throughout America. The large size of the Pennsylvania German barn differed from the smaller English barn system primarily because it centralized multiple agricultural operations under one roof instead of scattering operations in multiple barns. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the English and German building traditions were blended together and largely defined the major developmental trends in American barn building.

http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/buildings/new-england/connected-farm/barn/barn.htm
Finally, the Barn that terminates the connected building complex and, as on most American farms, is the functional center of the farming operation,, On the New England farm, it primarily sheltered farm animals and their food.
Although this four-part arrangement might sometimes appear haphazard, most nineteenth-century New England connected farm buildings shared similar patterns of spatial organization and usage. Most farms were aligned at right angles to the road with the major facades of the big house and the barn facing the road. Farmers then oriented their line of connected buildings to shelter a south- or east-facing work yard, called the door yard, from north or west winter winds.
Thus the formal front yard was an extension of the architecturally formal big house, the working door yard was an extension of the workrooms in the little house and the back house, and the animal barnyard was an extension of the barn. Learn more about the ENGLISH Barn ( click) Learn more about the New England Barn (click) A barnyard was usually located on the south or east side of the barn for similar reasons. Many farmers also added a formal front yard between the front door of the big house and the road. This three-yard system was the dominant pattern for connected farms during much of the nineteenth century and reinforced the functional organization of the farm.

The original Iowa State barn was built in 1860, along with the Farm House, as the first two buildings on the new campus following establishment of the College and Model Farm site. These structures were razed in the Fall of 1928 or Spring of 1929. A new cattle barn (described below as the Beef Barn) had been constructed in 1924-25. Cattle Barn (Beef Barn), 1924-1980s. The building came to be known as the Beef Barn but was designated in University documents only as Cattle Barn. The cattle barns in use at the time were known as Old and New Cattle Barns both of which were razed about three years after this barn was completed. Previous cattle barns housed both beef and dairy cattle; however, the new Dairy Barn was completed on Mortensen Road in 1908 and the dairy animals relocated at that time. Records do not reveal whether the barn ever served as a site for dairy production. However, the west wing did contain a number of stanchions of a type that could be used for milking. These stalls and stanchions were used for many years for Holstein nurse cows for steers being fitted in the Beef Barn for exhibition at the International Livestock Show in Chicago. Three International grand champion steers were developed in the facility. The Cattle Barn was generally known over the years as the Beef Barn. George Edwards, long-time herdsman, and students developed three International Grand Champion steers here.

Rural Architecture and Material Culture
A Bibliography by Tom Isern and Tricia Velure
You can get information on historic architecture and architectural styles from many sources. For instance, this site has links to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and that site includes a helpful bibliography. Working in rural Bowman County, however, we realized that we often were dealing with structures that had little to do with high architecture and were not much treated in the standard sources on architectural style. So we began compiling a list of good sources for the interpretation of rural architecture and material culture, which we offer here. This bib is by no means exhaustive, but we post it because others might find it useful, and because we welcome suggested additions. One more caveat: This bib emphasizes the material culture of the plains, and is less concerned with other regions. The photo at right, incidentally, is from the Fred Hulstrand Collection in the NDSU Institute for Regional Studies. It depicts that classic vernacular dwelling of homesteaders on the northern plains, the tarpaper shack.

Gutwein, who grew up on an Indiana farm, recently spent several days in Northwest Indiana, painting pictures of old barns, including a century-old round barn at the farm of Amy and David Dance in rural Crown Point. She is hoping her focus will help place importance on historic structures that may soon be missing from the state's landscape.
"I focus on one county on a time. I drive around the state and am looking for barns that are old and historic or are architecturally unique to the farm heritage," she said.
While in the area, Gutwein also painted renderings of barns at Buckley Homestead County Park near Lowell and one outside Hebron in rural Porter County.
She said her goal, once completed with her collection of paintings from all 92 counties, is to have a statewide exhibit of her work to bring attention to Indiana's historical barns.
"I want the project to draw awareness to the fact we're losing our barns. They're our heritage, and they're literally falling into the ground," she said.
