Patrick Wormald
Oxford historian of Anglo-Saxon Britain who championed the study of early and medieval law codes
The Anglo-Saxons are his most accessible publication. He always enjoyed controversy and recently wrote an article in The Times Literary Supplement NI_MPU('middle'); Ecclesiastical History of the English People From Balliol Wormald won a prize fellowship to All Souls College at the age of 22. This was a glittering prize indeed, as the fellowship entitled him to a living in the college for seven years in the company of the cleverest men in England (there were no women fellows in 1969). Like the Scholars at Eton, All Souls was devoted to intellectual competition and aristocratic living. Wormald was not an aristocrat, but he took on some of the colour of these institutions and, when roused, was reminiscent of Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited.

CHURCH HISTORY
The Entrenchment of the Roman Catholic Church (590–800)
Medieval Church History, part 1
By Dr. Jack L. Arnold
  • INTRODUCTION
  • The stage had been set for the complete development of the papal system which dominated western civilization for almost 950 years, from 590 to 1517.
  • Apart from the providence of God, there were many secular and religious events in history which gave the Roman See such great power.
  • THE CONDITION OF THE CHURCH IN THE WEST AFTER THE FALL OF ROME
  • There was political chaos in western Europe, for the influence of the Roman culture was lessening and new forms of thought were becoming prominent because of the intermingling of Teutonic and Roman ideas.
  • War and famine were commonplace and the Lombards, Germanic barbarians, were threatening to capture all of Italy, which had just been captured by the Goths. The Lombards had very little respect for the Bishop of Rome and used him mainly for political purposes.
  • The Church outside of Italy had lost much prestige. The influence of the Roman pontiff had become very weak in Spain, Gaul and Illyria, and almost vanished in Africa.

Tue Jan 13 21:40:58 CST 2004 http://www.historychannel.com/ Similarly The Barbarians (interesting looking ads keep running all the time showing great mobs hacking violently at each other) begins Monday the 19th-Tuesday the 20th on the History Channel at 9 e.s.t./8 central. There are four programs - Vikings, Goths, Huns, and Mongols. Vikings and Goths on the 19th. Mongols and Huns on the 20th. Two Parts - Four Hours. One gets the impression that they would run out of actors very quickly in all the mayhem. It looks worse than a bunch of Drunken Irish Butchers in Gangs of New York. http://www.historychannel.com/barbarians/ You can pre-order this thing (and a lot of Viking programs, and Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, etc. from the webpage.) I think I'd wait and see it myself. I seem to be noticing some massive differences in VHS and DVD prices recently (like in the Acorn catalog I get on English Programs) with DVDs being much cheaper all of a sudden. Of newer interest are some new programs coming to the theaters between now and summer. Braveheart/Gladiator/ LoTR fever has struck in a massive way indeed. Troy starring many heartthrobs, I've seen the posters and website only so far. But the website looks impressive. http://troymovie.warnerbros.com/index_flash.html

The library also has multiple copies of the first edition on long loan at PO.A. The second edition offers far more than the first. This is a challenging but rewarding book which positions western Europe in the wider context of events throughout 'Christendom', and revises many of the ideas first floated in Brown's The World of Late Antiquity (London, 1971). These three-hundred years demonstrate, from Britain all the way to the Adriatic Sea, the shift from Roman order to bloody and lawless disorder. Indeed, while the eras of Republican and Classical Imperial Rome were full of revolts, military difficulties, and economic downturns, it is when studying Rome's last generations that we can fully understand the nostalgia that people of the Middle Ages and Renaissance held for the glorious vision of Rome that died along with Marcus Aurelius. In effect, then, Roman history beginning with Constantine, as the historian Bury puts it, is European Medieval history. By Constantine's time, the historical circumstances that were to mark the years up through 600 and beyond were already in evidence: Barbarian tribes were seeping into Britain and Western European lands; Emperors as semi-deified, withdrawn, and absolutist kings; involuntary peasant labor on lands not their own; personal bonds and personal law beginning to replace impersonal law common to large expanses of territory; and, of course, the Catholic Church, which would provide spiritual and moral direction, as well as temporal leadership and material support, during the darkest times of the early Medieval period.
