For it not only drew all produce to it, but also drained the Low Country of critical talent and leadership and held on tightly to political power. The Recruiting Officer Porgy and Bess Although Charleston was still small in comparison with the principal Northern cities, it was by far the biggest and most powerful city in the South. The 1800 census showed Philadelphia with a population of 69,403; Boston with 24,937; Charleston with 20,473; Richmond with 5,737; and Savannah with 5,166.

History The original inhabitants of Barbados were Arawak Indians, who were driven off the island around 1200 AD by invading Carib Indians from Venezuela. The Caribs themselves abandoned Barbados around the time the first Europeans sailed into the region. Although the conditions of the Carib departure are unclear, some historians believe the Spanish might have landed on Barbados in the early 1500s and taken some of the Caribs as slaves, prompting the rest of the tribe to flee to neighboring islands. Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos stopped on Barbados in 1536 en route to Brazil. Though he had no interest in settling the island, it's thought that he introduced pigs to Barbados with the intention of using them as a food source on return voyages. It was Campos who named the island Los Barbados ('the bearded ones'), presumably after the island's fig trees, whose long, hanging aerial roots have a beard-like resemblance. Captain John Powell landed on Barbados in 1625 and claimed the uninhabited island for England. Two years later, his brother Captain Henry Powell landed with a party of 80 settlers and 10 slaves. The group established the island's first European settlement, Jamestown, on the western coast at what is now Holetown. More settlers followed in their wake and by the end of 1628 the colony's population had grown to 2000.

    Money History
The History of Coins and Currency In Barbados
The story of money in Barbados contains many intriguing chapters which span three and a half centuries. For most of this period, the value of money depended on the Crown’s authority. It was not until 1951 that a regional currency with its own regulating board was introduced. In 1972 Barbados assumed control of its monetary system and established the Central Bank of Barbados.
Early settlement and the Barter System
The first settlers in 1627 brought prevailing English monetary systems with them, but there was very little actual money in the island. For a long time cotton, tobacco and sugar were legal tender. It was forbidden to export coins from Britain, and the English would not permit the colonists to mint their own. As a result, a wide variety of Spanish and Portuguese colonial coins were circulated in the West Indies. However, complaints about the shortage of circulating money in the islands continued. In an effort to keep the existing coins in the island, the colonial government deliberately over-valued the coins in circulation. The values of these coins were fixed at an official rate from time to time. They were not finally withdrawn from use until 1893.

meetings eligibility ... the silver club BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CARIBBEAN SHIPPING ASSOCIATION By Michael S. L. Jarrett The need to establish an effective, broad-based Association to monitor, discuss and share information in support of the growth and development of shipping in the Caribbean was accepted in the 1960s when shipping interests realized that there was much to learn and emulate from the initiatives and strategies employed in neighbouring Caribbean territories to solve similar problems. Specifically, the revolutionary achievements by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) in successfully negotiating with hostile unions for the mechanization of the Port of Kingston started a process where port interests across the Caribbean met to exchange ideas. Trinidad, Barbados and Bermuda were experiencing similar problems with their trade unions and delegations from the national shipping associations of these countries visited Jamaica within a short time of each other to discuss and learn from the achievements of the Shipping Association of Jamaica. These discussions forged a relationship between these national associations and in 1969 representatives from five national associations met in Port of Spain for an informal meeting to discuss labour contracts, labour practices and other problems affecting the shipping industry. The meeting was so useful, the group decided to meet again in six months.

I therefore take great pride and pleasure in welcoming all of you to Barbados on the occasion of the Thirty-Second Regular Session of the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States. I regret only that I cannot offer you the keys to the city of Bridgetown. We have no municipal form of Government in Barbados. Such keys as they are to our capital city are therefore firmly in the grasp of its elected Member of Parliament; the Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ms. Billie Miller, who will be your Chairperson at this meeting. She stands ready to extend to you every comfort and delight that Bridgetown has to offer to make this meeting held under her Chairmanship, and in her constituency, one of the most memorable in the history of this Organisation. This General Assembly is being convened in furtherance of one of nature's and history's great causes.

A ir Jamaica began operations in 1966 as the first Jamaican based international airline. It was governed by a tripartite agreement between the Government of Jamaica, BWIA, and BOAC (now British Airways). However, on April 1, 1969, Air Jamaica Limited was born with the Government of Jamaica holding majority shares in the airline. Air Canada held a minority interest and provided equipment, technology, training, pilots, and some top management. Then in 1984, the Jamaican Government acquired the airline through a “buy back” agreement with Air Canada. Ten years later, in 1994, the Government of Jamaica embarked on a privatization exercise. The Gordon “Butch” Stewart led Air Jamaica Acquisition Group (AJAG) acquired majority ownership of the national airline with the government retaining a minority stake.
I n 2004, after severe turbulence in the airline industry and massive financial losses, the Government of Jamaica reclaimed full control of the airline.
