History : Little is known of the early history of Barbados ? it was probably occupied by Arawak Indians from South America up until the arrival of the Spanish, in the region in the early-16th century. The earliest European arrivals were the Portuguese - also in the early-16th century - although the British established the first settlements in 1627. Barbados was declared a British colony in 1663. Slaves were brought to the island from Africa, to work on the sugar plantations until the abolition of slavery in the mid-19th century. Barbados joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 and was granted internal self-government three years later. Full independence within the British Commonwealth was achieved in 1966.
Politics on the island have since been dominated by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) ? formed by Grantley Adams in 1937 ? and the rival Democratic Labour Party (DLP), which began life after a split in the BLP. The two parties have alternated between government and opposition since independence. The DLP's most recent term of office ended in 1994, after eight years in charge. Since then, the BLP has been pre-eminent. At the most recent general election, held in January 1999, the BLP won an overwhelming victory, taking 26 of the 28 House of Assembly seats.

Over the last seven years, while being conscious of a mandate to attract visitors to the island, an attempt was made to ground the event as a Barbadian festival. This was done by encouraging the participation of local and Regional artistes to share the stage with international acts. Opportunity was also given for the showcase of other areas of artistic expression such as dance and mime.
Leading exponents of Barbadian Gospel music such as Joseph Niles, Sis. Magarita Marshall, Promise, Tony Lowe, The Miracalets and Gratitude have graced the Gospelfest stage and contributed to the success of the event, while venues such as Farley Hill National Park, the Jackie Opel Amphitheatre and Heroes Square have added a uniqueness to the festival and brands it as distinctly Barbadian.

Family history and world history
This paper is to encourage a closer association of family history and world history, with a focus on the early modern era. I argue that there exist global patterns of family development and interaction, and that historians are now in a position to begin identifying and exploring them. Studies of the family in history have achieved major advances in the past two generations, thanks to work by historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and demographers. Studies in family reconstitution, genealogy, and lineage structures have added depth and detail to the literature on social history for many and perhaps most regions of the world. Most of these studies have been micro-histories, treating families as localized units. Indeed, the family is an intimate and private unit, and does not automatically lend itself to world historical analysis. Nevertheless, some broad and comparative studies have addressed such topics as European fertility.

BRC History Sometime towards the end of 1956, David Massiah and Maurice Hutt were on a bird watching drive to Long Pond. On the way back to Sion Hill, by way of Rock Hall Hill, they conceived the idea that Barbados had some prime rally country, and it could be quite possible to organise a rally. Later that night over drinks at Sion Hill, David and Maurice were joined by Bill Mallalieu and Sam Ward and discussion of a rally became serious. Early in 1957, a group of 12 met at the Hotel Royal and began serious planning. The 12 were: Maurice Hutt History Teacher - Harrison's College. Part time Ornithologist Hazel Hutt Housewife David Massiah Engineer Builders Ltd. Wilfred Massiah Teacher - Lodge School Sam Ward Planter, Manager - River Plantation Bill Mallalieu Estate Agent Dennis Bannister Manager - ABC Motors David McKenzie Manager - McEnearneys Frank Hutchinson Chelsea Garage Graham Wilkes Teacher - Lodge School. Later Founder and Principal of Mapps College Geoffrey Manning Planter - Golden Grove Fred Mallalieu Banker - Barclays Banks Eventually the rally was held over 110 miles, starting at Applewaites factory and finishing at Vaucluse. It was highly successful. It must be noted that there were no cell phones or communication of any kind. Every detail of the rally had to be planned in advance and timed to the second. The calculation of the results was a major undertaking.

SPANISH GOVERNMENT BRITISH COMMONWEALTH PROFILE
BEFORE THE SPANIARDS occupied Jamaica in the early sixteenth century, the island was inhabited by the Arawak Indians, who called it Xaymaca, meaning "land of wood and springs." Lying on the trade routes between the Old and New Worlds, Jamaica served variously for centuries as a way station for Spanish galleons, a market for slaves and goods from many countries, and a prize for the Spaniards, the British, buccaneers, and entrepreneurs. By far the largest of the English-speaking islands in size and population, independent Jamaica has played a leading role within the Commonwealth Caribbean and has been active in international organizations. Jamaica's story is one of independence that began in the seventeenth century with the Maroons, runaway slaves who resisted the British colonizers by carrying out hit-and-run attacks from the interior. Their 7,000 descendants in the Cockpit Country have symbolized the fervent, sometimes belligerent, love of freedom that is ingrained in the Jamaican people as a result of both their British tutelage and their history of slavery. Independence came quietly, however, without a revolutionary struggle, apparently reflecting the lasting imprint of the British parliamentary legacy on Jamaican society. Despite its people's respect for the rule of law and the British Westminster system of government

The Barbados Defence Force
In the late 1980s, Barbados was one of only two Eastern Caribbean states to maintain a standing military force (Antigua and Barbuda was the other). The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) was established in 1978 as a force completely separate from the RBPF. It has played a leading role in the RSS. Within the RSS framework, Barbados contributed the highest percentage of the system's budget, provided BDF headquarters as the RSS base of operations (and the BDF chief of staff as RSS coordinator), and informally earmarked the BDF as the primary regional reaction force in crisis situations. This understanding may have been abandoned, however, when the BLP government was voted out of power in May 1986. Domestically, the BDF was a somewhat controversial institution insofar as its existence underscored the Barbadian (and, one might well say, the Caribbean) ambivalence toward established military organizations. The circumstances that led then-Prime Minister Tom Adams to create the BDF were unsettling and worrisome to the government and to many Barbadians. Adams's October 1976 announcement of an aborted attempt by two United States nationals to seize power with the aid of mercenary forces (and the explosion five days after the announcement of a Cuban airplane at Grantley Adams International Airport) exposed the vulnerability of small island governments to destabilization by outside forces (just as the 1979 overthrow of the Eric Gairy government in Grenada displayed the susceptibility of such states to takeover by domestic dissident groups). The establishment of the BDF was subsequently justified, at least in the eyes of Adams and his supporters, by its successful December 1979 intervention on Union Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which quelled an uprising by militant Rastafarians (see Glossary; Regional Security Threats, 1970-81, ch. 7).

Regional Security Threats, 1970-81
The relative stability characterizing the Westminster-style democracies of the Commonwealth Caribbean began to crumble in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago were shaken by political violence. Until they began achieving independence, the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had been relatively immune from subversion because of the efficient protection provided by British security and defense guarantees. The Black Power movement (see Glossary) was behind much of the social disorder, although criminal violence also rose to unprecedented levels. Black Power activists almost succeeded in overthrowing Prime Minister Williams in Trinidad and Tobago in 1970, but government troops finally suppressed the revolt with the assistance of a planeload of arms and ammunition purchased from the United States and Venezuela (see Political Dynamics, ch. 3). Another small Marxist group continued to carry out terrorist attacks on the island for a few years. The leaders of most of the Marxist-Leninist-oriented opposition groups in the region were known to have had close contact with Cuba. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were particularly concerned about Cuban involvement in the indigenous Black Power movement. Virtually all of the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had at least one small extremist group that was an occasional security threat.

The Caribbean Practices

Our practices in the Caribbean date as far back as 1909 and the establishment of an office in Guyana by the British accounting firm, Fitzpatrick, Graham, Greenwood. Two years later a new practice was formed in Trinidad. The first partner was Albert Kerr.
Milestones
First female auditors:
In the 1950's the staff at the Trinidad practice numbered just about 80 and was mainly male. Women, were hired primarily for secretarial and minor book-keeping positions until the early 1960's when the firm started targeting girls about to leave high-school as possible recruits and the first female auditors were brought on staff. The Barbados office hired it's first female auditor in 1977 - and she became one of the firm's first female Partners in 1990!
First local Partners:
In 1971, Gerald Sancho became the first Trinidadian to be made a Partner in the firm. Over the next two years he was joined by three more - Paul Anthony Buxo (1972), then Tommy Evans and Chanka Seeteram in 1973. In 1976 the Trinidad practice became entirely locally owned with financial and professional links with smaller practices scattered throughout the region, from Guyana to the OECS islands.
Caribbean Standards:
During the 1970's, prior to the establishment of the International Accounting Standards Committee, the Caribbean practices were actively involved in the development of accounting standards for the region and the creation of a common audit pack. Partners from throughout the Caribbean would gather for annual conferences, building the camaraderie that underlies the profession in the region to this day.

B arbados has been one of the best Caribbean models of how to convert your economy to tourism. The build out began in the 1960s and for some has completed a cycle that other islands are only now beginning as they face severe drop off in banana exports. Barbados is a mature and flourishing democracy with excellent infrastructure and first-rate schools and transit. Bajans are as literate and articulate a people as you will find any where and they take great pride in their island nation of 265,000 people.
S ometimes called the most British Caribbean republic with a reputation as the home of some of the most talented pan-Caribbean business people the island is most distinctively West Indian. Afterall the rum shops are more important than tea time and the top bands in Barbados like Square One and Krosfayh tour year round to support the thriving West Indian Carnival culture spread which has so visibly spread to metro centers throughout Europe and the Western hemisphere.
B ridgetown, the capital, is a true City with many centuries of history The nightlife most mentioned is elsewhere at the famous tourist strip called the Saint Lawrence Gap which also host important Cropover Carnival events. The tourists in Barbados come from all over the world drawn by the agreeable climate, brilliant sandy beaches and broad tourist infrastructure which can accommodate most tastes and needs. There is surprisingly plenty to see and do beyond the typical beach getaway and this guide to the guides will get you there.

Portuguese explorers probably landed on Barbados in the 16th century, but the first settlement was not established until 1627 and then by English colonists. It was made a Crown possession in 1663. The prosperity of the colony was gravely affected during the 18th century by war between the French and the British and by the American Revolution. Slavery on the island was abolished in 1833, leading to a substantial increase in agricultural production. Severe riots, resulting in bloodshed and loss of property, occurred in 1876, when the British government proposed a confederation of Barbados and the Windward Islands, about 160 km (about 100 mi) to the west. In the following decades the African and mixed majority slowly rose to political power, eventually outnumbering the white landholders in the legislature. In 1937 poor economic conditions caused serious unrest, and a British Royal Commission was sent to Barbados. As a result, social and political reforms were gradually introduced, and in 1951 universal adult suffrage was achieved. Barbados joined the Federation of the West Indies (1958-1962), which also included Trinidad and Tobago. search this website :: site map privacy legal

Since then, the OAS has expanded to include the nations of the English-speaking Caribbean, as well as Canada. The principles that embody the OAS grew out of a history of regional cooperation dating back to the 19th century.
  • In 1826, Simón Bolívar convened the Congress of Panama with the idea of creating an association of states in the hemisphere. In 1890, the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington, D.C., established the International Union of American Republics and its secretariat, the Commercial Bureau of the American Republics—the forerunner of the OAS. In 1910, this organization became the Pan American Union. In 1948, at the Ninth International American Conference, participants signed the OAS Charter and the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man, the first international expression of human rights principles.
