    Government of Barbados Information Network
global As Barbados moves towards the Year 2000, it recognises that its relations with the world are critical to its development. One way that this can be achieved is by the exchange of information. The development of a Government of Barbados Information Network is therefore an important step in this information exchange, providing as it does, a mechanism for information on Barbados which is available to the world community.

General and Historic Information The Barbadian Flag is representative of our independence from England. Neptune's Trident appeared in the Seal when the island was still a colony, the broken Trident on the flag is thus representative of the break with our past, and the step towards independence. The blue panels are for the sea and the sky, while the centre gold panel is for the sand of our beaches. The Barbadian Coat of Arms carries the National Flower in each corner (the Pride of Barbados) of its Golden Shield, as well as the Bearded Fig Tree (the tree from which Barbados derives its name). Though the English were the first to settle the island, it was actually found by the Portuguese, who, upon seeing the Bearded Fig Tree named the island 'Los Barbados', meaning 'The Bearded Ones'. Later the English dropped the 'Los', calling the island simply Barbados. Above the Shield and the Helmet a hand holds two peices of sugar cane (the main crop of the island) in the shape of St. Andrew's Cross. Independence day is celebrated on St. Andrew's Day, the 30th of November.

But while this has given it a higher living standard than most Caribbean countries, it also presents it with the twin challenges of finding ways to lessen its vulnerability to world downturns in tourism and of distributing its wealth more equitably. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA A former British colony and a member of the Commonwealth, Barbados is an island with a dual heritage: English, as is evident from its stone Anglican churches and horse races on Saturdays, and African, as manifested in its music and dance. At times these overlap harmoniously, as in the Barbadian appropriation of the English game of cricket. But at other times they brim with latent tension - between the affluent white community, which owns and controls the economy, funds political parties and exercises an indirect influence on government policy, and the majority black Barbadians. To meet these challenges, the Barbadian government has sought to boost the country's offshore banking services and to encourage investment in information technology. The country has offshore reserves of oil and natural gas.
