All sources seem to agree that the blue shade is lighter then the standard blue used in the UJ (and in the Governor General of Barbados flag) and yellow is in all representation dark, almost orange. [ ] designate the flag as CSW/CSW, but since BB has no navy and since (as it seems) the white ensign was introduced in the mean time ( Naval and Coast Guard Ensign ), the usage designation seems to be all right as shown in Album 2000.

The major political problems facing Barbados today are in promoting economic growth: creating jobs, encouraging agricultural diversification, attracting foreign investment, and promoting tourism. The ruling BLP was decisively returned to power in May 2003 elections, winning 23 seats in the Parliament with the DLP gaining seven seats. The Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, who also serves as Minister of Finance and Minister of Culture, has given a high priority to economic development and diversification. The main opposition party, the DLP, is led by Sen. Clyde Mascoll, who was elected President of the DLP in 2001, as part of a party reorganization.

HEALTH-BARBADOS: Government to Make AIDS Drugs Free to HIV Infected Persons Inter Press Service - December 15, 2000
George Alleyne BRIDGETOWN, Dec 15 (IPS) - Propelled by an alarming growth in the incidence of HIV and AIDS, the Barbados government has decided to make free to all infected persons, anti-retroviral drugs that check the spread of the disease within the body. This move means that the HIV/AIDS budget will increase significantly, from its current 600,000 dollars to over 12 million dollars annually. Officials are unable to say exactly when the programme will begin, but it is expected to provide some financial relief for those infected with HIV (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV patients spend 800 dollars a month on AIDS medication. Currently such drugs are available without cost only to pregnant women. Prime Minister Owen Arthur, who made the announcement recently, spoke of an ambitious drive to cut by half the number of deaths attributed to AIDS, within one year. According to Dr Roland Knight of the environmental health department of the health ministry, in Barbados there is a short survival rate of 10 to 12 months for persons who have moved from the stage of HIV infection to full blown AIDS.

Canada has continued its reckless policy of besmirching its formerly good name throughout Latin America by recklessly aping U.S. policy toward Haiti. Ottawa used its good offices to pressure CARICOM to move on and embrace the IGH. Minister of International Cooperation Aileen Carroll emphasized that such a decision would be in the interest of the Haitian people and the advancement of security on the island, ignoring the fact that, in truth, the situation has sharply worsened since Washington, with the connivance of Canada, France and Kofi Annan, installed Latortue at the head of the IGH.

Under the constitution of 1966, legislative power is vested in a parliament consisting of an upper house, the Senate, and a lower house, the House of Assembly. The Senate has 21 government-appointed members; the 28 members of the House of Assembly are elected by universal suffrage (all citizens over the age of 18). The British monarch, nominally the head of state, is represented by a governor-general who presides over a privy council appointed after consultation with the prime minister. A cabinet, composed of the prime minister and other ministers responsible to the parliament, directs and controls the government. search this website :: site map privacy legal

History101/051, Professor Seenarine, April 13, 1999 Walking through Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, one could see the remains of colonial history. Lord Nelson (a British soldier) dwarfs Trafalgar Square with authority, yet his contribution to this small nation is non existent. Trafalgar Square, Drax Hall and other popular street names pay homage to the country that once colonized it. The buildings still preserve their English architecture like they are scared to cut loose, Barbados is still obedient to the crown. The country has changed and its inhabitants are more autonomous than their ancestors but they too, are still brain washed in the ways of the English. Many still like to boast of their connection to the "Mother Land", shouting that she has set them free like it was not their right as humans to be free. England had freed Barbados yet a lot of the 18 th th century a woman’s place was in the home, her obligations were to her husband, children and lastly herself. Marilyn French states, "When women have attempted to gain something the oppressors themselves needed or wanted, they have been seen as willy, calculating and deceitful, when they insisted on their own needs and desires they have been seen as willful bitches, selfish monsters and demonic castrators"(1986,p.131). Women were not allowed to express their need to walk from behind their husband’s shadow. The movement in the U.S. spread its wings like a bird and it reached Barbadian shores however it was not received with enthusiasm like it did in the U.S. As a matter of fact it created a lot of animosity, however, one woman who was influenced by the movement was Carmeta Frazier.

    Monday, May 22, 2005
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Prime Minister Owen Arthur is being pressed to retract immediately the Barbados government's policy to engage fully with the Gerard Latortue regime in Haiti.
President of the Clement Payne Movement, David Commissiong says his organisation is also pushing for Mr. Arthur publicly to insist on the unconditional release of former Haitian Prime Minister, Yvon Neptune as well as all other political prisoners.
Mr. Neptune has been held in a prison in Haiti's capital, Port-Au-Prince, for almost a year without charges or any evidence having been presented against him. He has been on hunger strike since mid-April and, while family members and other visitors say he is weak and nearing death, interim Prime Minister, Latortue is reported as saying there is absolutely no risk of death.
In an open letter to the Prime Minister dated May 20th and which was sent after a 'Solidarity with Haiti Rally' held on that day, Mr. Commissiong said the movement is concerned that the Barbados government’s policy of fully engaging with the Latortue regime has given comfort and confidence to "human rights abusers who now occupy the corridors of power in Haiti".
