INTRODUCTION
Background: The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance. TOP OF PAGE

Church to present Barbados government with alternative plan to combat HIV/AIDS
Thursday, March 17, 2005 BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The battle between Barbadians who want to see homosexuality and prostitution legalized and those taking a firm stance against the move is continuing with the church now saying it's willing to prepare and present alternative proposals to government for use in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Discussions surrounding the question of HIV/AIDS have recently resurfaced since a report, written by Professor Mickey Walrond to address the scourge, was made public.

Barbados government denies turning back Guyanese visitors
Friday, July 22, 2005 BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The Barbados government has denied turning back a plane load of Guyanese from Grantley Adams International Airport. But Chief Immigration Officer, Gilbert Greaves has been giving reasons why several people from that country were sent back home when they tried to enter Barbados earlier this week. Reports in the Guyanese press indicated that the Guyanese who came for the Crop Over Festival were arbitrarily deported and given no reason for the action.
