Island Geography arbados is the most easterly in the Caribbean chain of islands. Its splendid isolated location is at latitude 13 degrees north and longitude 59 degrees west. Measuring 23km(14miles) at its widest point, 34km(21miles) long and a mere area of 416 square km (166sq miles). The population is 267,900 and growing. Geographically Barbados is not a part of the arc of Caribbean islands since only the West Coast of the Caribbean lies in the Caribbean Sea. The North and East Coasts however lie in the Atlantic Ocean. For this reason, these coasts are known to be really dangerous with very high waves and strong currents but the South Coast has some decent swells making it excellent for any form of surfing. The island is largely surrounded by coral reefs extending in some places 3 m. seaward which results in the fine, white sand that makes up our beaches. These coral reefs also protect our coastlines. Before Barbados was settled by the British in 1627, numerous mangrove swamps surrounded the island and protected the reefs. Unfortunately, many of these swamps have been destroyed so hotels could be constructed. Fortunately 2 of them remain today and the more popular of the two is the Graeme Hall Swamp. Recently steps have been taken to preserve the precious coral reefs and several ships have been sunk at strategic points along the island to make artificial reefs.

    THE BARBADOS MUSEUM
The Barbados Museum, once a military prison, is one of several buildings that make up the historic Garrison area. Built between 1817 and 1818, the prison was leased to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society in 1933.
From the building's own structure to its many galleries, each displaying an element of old Barbados, the Museum is a fascinating visit. The Museum also hosts visiting exhibits of modern art among other temporary displays.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance. TOP OF PAGE

Most of the island is made up of soft marine deposits of coral limestone. This limestone cover gives way in the north-eastern part of the island to a terrain of clays and sandstones comprising the Scotland marine sedimentary formation. This area runs through the parishes of St. Joseph, St. John and St. Andrew and embraces about one-sixth of the island. Barbados has been described as flat and low lying, but in fact, it rises from west to east in a series of gentle terraces to its highest point of about 1100ft at Mount Hillaby in St. Andrew. The terrain dips in St. George to form the St. George Valley, separating the main limestone terraces from a lower limestone ridge in the Christ Church area. Temperature and Rainfall
Barbados enjoys a stable climate. The temperature rarely falls below 23°C or rises above 30°C. There is a definite "wet season" from July to November and a "dry season" with minimum rainfall recorded in February and March. Population
At the end of 2000 residential population stood at 267,900 with birth rate per thousand being 14.0 and population growth rate 0.2.
