Interesting Facts
  • On a per capita basis, Bajans boast more world-class cricket players than any other nation. Barbados – the general consensus is that this was derived from the fascination of the Iberians with the pendulous, aerial roots of the Bearded Fig Tree (A Ficus) which are reminiscent of a long, thick beard. "Barba" means beard and "barbados" translates to the "bearded ones"...hence the Island of "Barbados."

The prosperity of the colony was gravely affected during the 18th century by wars between the British and French and by the American revolution. In 1834 slavery was abolished and this led to a substantial increase in agriculture production. Barbados gained full internal self-government in 1961 and became an independent state on November 30, 1966.

A GUIDE TO THE CULTURAL HEART OF BARBADOS
Barbados has fascinating and rich cultural traditions. In celebration of the history of the island and its Caribbean roots, Barbados has firmly established itself as the premier cultural and festive destination of the Caribbean.
Culture in Barbados
The annual Jazz Festival in January is the celebration of the world's greatest jazz legends. This year it featured world known artists Alicia Keys, Ellis Marsalis, Gato Barbieri, Tito de Garcia as well as Bajan legend Tamara Marshall and many more. Smooth sounds of jazz filtering through the swaying palms and with warm tropical nights - a perfect setting for a musical paradise experience called Barbados. The grand finale of the Jazz Festival at Farley Hill National Park is a celebration of the true Bajan spirit and its unique culture. Crop Over and Holetown Festivals are the most energetic and eagerly anticipated parties of the year in the whole Caribbean. Crop Over celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest season and takes place over 5 weeks from July to August while Holetown Festival celebrates the discovery of Barbados by the British in 1627 and takes place in February. Tropical colour costumes with sparkling bright trimmings, topped with feathers and decorated with paint make these annual events the ultimate Caribbean Party experience. You can just watch, participate or 'lime', the Bajan term for relaxing whilst sipping the national drink - Rum Punch.

Culture Aside from its Spanish name, very little Spanish (or other continental) influence remains on Barbados. Its position in the Windwards made the island relatively safe from invasion, leaving British culture to incubate here for nearly 400 years. The chief example of this is the Bajan national sport, if not the national obsession: cricket. On a per capita basis, Bajans boast more world-class cricket players than any other nation. One of the game's best ever all-rounders was Barbados native Garfield Sobers, who was knighted in 1975. Another local cricket hero, Sir Frank Worrell, appears on the face of Barbados' five-dollar bill. Despite the British influence, West Indian culture is strong in family life, food and music. Calypso artist the Mighty Gabby, whose songs on cultural identity and political protest speak for emerging black pride throughout the Caribbean, is from Barbados. It's not really surprising that Barbados is fertile ground for such voices since it still suffers from a history of racial segregation and discrimination by the white minority against the black majority.

Posted Sunday, October 15, 2000 Well, I went diving for the first time in my life today. I mean, we won't get into the fact that it was only yesterday that I went snorkeling for the first time but I went diving today. We didn't go very far since it was our first time but it was so amazing. Never mind that our SCUBA instructor calls us sea donkeys no one could have been as bad as I was. E-mail this page
