The remaining 10 per cent is made up of whites and persons of mixed racial descent. Almost 30 percent of the people are Anglicans; other important faiths include various Protestant sects and Roman Catholicism. The people of Barbados lay strong emphasis on education, which has been made free and compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 16. Arts, Culture and Music of Barbados The culture of Barbados has visible traces of English culture, which had made its presence felt through more than three centuries of English rule. But the folk culture of Barbados clearly has descended from African origin, so ha the music and dances. Flag of Barbados The flag of Barbados is made up of three equal vertical bands - blue towards the hoist side, gold in the middle and blue at the bottom. Bridgetown - Culture Lord Nelson Statue Bridgetown capital and only port of entry of the island-state of Barbados, in the West Indies. It is on the southwestern end of the island, on the wide curve of Carlisle Bay. A built-up coastal strip stretches for several miles on each side of the town. The town, which was founded in 1628 and originally called Indian Bridge, provoked considerable criticism from early visitors because of its situation by a noxious swamp and its unplanned development. The name St. Michael's Town came into favour about 1660 and remained in use into the 19th century. Much of the town was destroyed repeatedly by fires, and in 1854 a cholera epidemic killed some 20,000 people. Bridgetown is a crowded and picturesque mixture of the old and new. St. Michael's Anglican Cathedral was built of coral rock, largely from the proceeds of a lottery to replace a building destroyed in a hurricane of 1780. Across Trafalgar Square (with a statue of the English admiral Lord Nelson) lies the Careenage, a narrow basin of the sea (also called the Constitution River) that houses dry docks and wharves. The Constitution River and the remnants of the swamp were filled in during 1962 and replaced with a canal. A deepwater harbour for commercial shipping, lying 0.75 mile (1.2 km) to the northwest, became operational in 1961. Government House dates from the early 18th century, and large modern ministerial buildings are by the shores of Carlisle Bay. Other notable landmarks include the Savannah, once the garrison parade ground, now used for race meetings and other gatherings; and Queen's Park, with its tropical vegetation. Bridgetown is the seat of Codrington College (affiliated with the University of Durham in England).

Christ Church - Culture C hrist Church lies on the South Coast of the island Barbados. The island is the eastern-most of the Caribbean islands; with the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is a curious mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic. This coast is more lively than the West Coast but calmer than the East or North Coasts. There are rollers for surfing with buggy boards and surfboards and some of the best windsurfing in the world. Annual surfing competitions and international surfing meet ing s are held on both the South and East Coast. Silver Sands, at the southern most tip of Christ Church, is an extremely popular spot for windsurfing. South Coast is a refreshing and relaxing pleasure with its cooling breezes, white coral sand beach and a wide range of activities It is therefore more of the liking to those who prefer excitement. The climate is wonderful ly warm and the people are friendly. Barba d ians will surprise you with their warmth, casual charm and sophistication. They are most spiritual and religiously conscious.

Barbados History and Culture
History When the Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos first found Barbados in the 17th century, he named it Barbados, which in Portuguese means “the bearded ones”. The Amerindian Arawaks were believed to be living on the island before the English first settled in 1627. Soon, thousands of African and European slaves were shipped over to Barbados to maintain the sugarcane industry which was flourishing. Barbados was the only island in the Caribbean to remain under British rule for more than three centuries without any interruptions. The island finally achieved its independence within the Commonwealth in 1966.

A snippet of Bajan culture: In Barbados, part of the culture comes from learning not to stare when you pass a cow grazing in the median (or on the side) of one of the island's busiest highways. Because many Bajans don't have much land of their own, it's a more-or-less accepted practice for people to "tie down" their cows wherever the grass is. The Bajan leads the cow out in the morning, ties a heavy rock to the cow's horn by a long rope, and leaves the animal till nightfall. The cow eventually provides meat (and sometimes milk, if the owner breeds the cow) for a Bajan family at a lower cost than buying the meat at market.
