Barbados is the most easterly piece of land in the Caribbean Sea. Its geographical location allows the northeasterly trade winds to envelope the island and keeping it cool yearlong. This delightful climate, the big blue sea and the brilliant white sandy beaches cause tourists to visit repeatedly. The island has a number of historic sites; gently rolling landscape and dramatic scenery in hidden caves and gullies. The capital city is Bridgetown, which is in the south-western part of the island. There are a number of plantation houses there dating back to colonial times, places like St. Nicholas Abbey and Francia.

, you will want to book early or look up the friend you made at the last Carnival if you want to catch the highlights on the Grand Weekend. Conga-line from April 22 - May 01 begins with the longest Congaline in the Caribbean and features a series of concerts at the Malibu Congaline Village. May 1 is the finale, where bands, floats and Carnival goers take part in the May Day Parade,
The Caribbean's largest summer Carnival begins on the first Saturday with the and Gala Crop Over Opening . This parade begins at Bridgetown Independence Square in the early afternoon and finishes at the National Stadium. Here, the opening ceremony takes place with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and the Crowning of the King and Queen of the Festival followed by an excellent night of entertainment and socializing.
The festival, revived in 1974 following a 30-year hiatus, continues to grow and evolve with the culture. Unlike most Carnivals whose roots are in Spring, Crop-over is a harvest festival dating back centuries to the end of the sugar cane season. The end to all the grueling and arduous work was marked by the final delivery of canes to the mill. Surely a cause for song, dance and general jubilation, as such, the workers would begin the festivities by boisterously telling each other "CROP OVER." Folk Concerts celebrating the emancipation from slavery are popular events during the Carnival season

Why Don't Other Bajans Accept That? By Stephanie Hinkson Every Labor Day, I celebrate my Bajan heritage at the Carnival on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. It's fun to see the different West Indian islands of the Caribbean coming together at this annual celebration-displaying costumes, performing music, and enjoying each other's food and cultures. I always wear something representing Barbados. Once, I wore a shirt with the Barbados flag on it and drew the flag on my jeans. Another time, I got a big flag and my grandmother made it into a dress.

My Tips and Advice: Barbados Vacation
Tip: Yell 'FORE' Across the Ocean While some people wouldn't think of putting golf and Caribbean together, most golf aficionados travel to a Barbados resort several times a year to get in a few rounds. Barbados has four golf courses (amazing for an island of its size).
The most famous of these courses is the Royal Westmoreland. A Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design, the Royal Westmoreland course offers a challenge with breathtaking views of Barbados' natural surroundings. Staying at the Royal's Country Club is not cheap, but if you are heading out to the Caribbean to play golf, chances are you can treat yourself the luxury.
Tip: The Basics When you are planning your Barbados vacation, you will need to know not only the name of your resort, but you'll also want to know your travel time, the distance between your resort and the airport, and other logistical information that will help you plan. You don't want to be without cash and in need of a cab!

Take off on an undersea excursion and discover a rainbow of exotic fish on this glass-bottom submarine cruise ship that delves into the watery deep surrounding Barbados. The Atlantis Submarine, located five minutes from the island's capital city of Bridgetown, offers tours, night diving, and snorkeling trips.
Tap your toes to the beat of bongos and steel pans, and let the energy of the Plantation Band and limbo queens move you as you dine, and feast your eyes on a cultural extravaganza. Bajan, Roots, and Rhythm, the only dinner and stage show on the island, is located at the Plantation Garden Theatre in Christ Church, Barbados. It's a must-see!

Because of this unbroken dominion, the stoic British influence courses through every day life and the infrastructure of the island. Yet the more flamboyant African sway pervades local life as well, and the blend of the two makes for an unmatched cultural disposition. This fusion ripples through all facets of daily living, from the foods and music to the house styles and street names. Even the language is affected, with Queen's English being the official 'language' while the colourful local dialect remains in common usage. More than 70 per cent of the island's 260 000 people are direct descendents from the forced mass Africa migration of the late 1600s and 1700s-the slave trade. The island also has a peaceful blend of European (primarily British) settler blood with the Afro descendents, as well as small but vibrant Hindu (India), Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) and Jewish communities. African influence is readily seen in the art, craft and literary works produced on the island, as well as many of the foods and figures of speech. Bajans are a quick-witted, fun-loving people and their gift for the double entendre or turn of phrase is most visible through calypso and literature. Local festivals, particularly the island's biggest national festival

Bajans, as the islanders call themselves, are as West Indian as any of their neighbours, and have tended to appropriate rather than adopt English customs. You'll notice this the first time you check out a local cricket match, since the gentlemanly English game has a totally different rhythm here. Nonetheless, there are old stone Anglican churches in every parish, horse races on Saturdays and portraits of Queen Liz hanging on walls.
