About this page

The Westboro Baptist Church, of Topeka, Kansas, is a hate group masquerading as a Christian church. Lead by the Rev. Phelps, members of this church target homosexuals with messages of hate.
The church's website, www.godhatesfags.com, is listed as a hate site by many internet watchdog organizations. Its content is the verbal equivalent to what you would find in any other sewer. The same is true for its companion site, http://www.godhatesamerica.com/.
Needless to say, the despicable teachings and practices of this extremist group fall outside those of historic, orthodox Christianity
This group of pseudo-Christians can be considered to be a cult of Christianity

The Bible clearly tells Christians to a) respect the government and b) pay all taxes due. The Indianapolis Baptist Church refused to do either, reflecting a lack of wisdom, insight and spiritual maturity on the part of that church's leadership. Christian orthodoxy (sound theology) leads to orthopraxis (correct behavior.) Aberrant behavior, as demonstrated by the Indianapolis Baptist Church, may therefore indicate the presence of unsound theology. Bad doctrine produces bad fruit behaviorally (e.g., Mark 7:7-13; Col. 2:20-23; 1 Tim. 4:1-5; 2 Pet. 2:1; Rev. 2:14-15, 20, 24), which is as true for Christians as it is for cultists. As Van Baalen stated, 'If practice follows from theory, if life is based upon teaching, it follows that the wrong doctrine will issue in the wrong attitude toward God and Christ, and consequently in warped and twisted Christian life.' Alan Gomes

This sign posted in front of Danieltown Baptist Church has sparked debate in Rutherford County about religious tolerance. (Josh Humphries/Daily Courier) By JOSH HUMPHRIES Daily Courier Staff Writer A sign in front of Danieltown Baptist Church, located at 2361 U.S. 221 south reads "The Koran needs to be flushed," and the Rev. Creighton Lovelace, pastor of the church, is not apologizing for the display. "I believe that it is a statement supporting the word of God and that it (the Bible) is above all and that any other religious book that does not teach Christ as savior and lord as the 66 books of the Bible teaches it, is wrong," said Lovelace. "I knew that whenever we decided to put that sign up that there would be people who wouldn't agree with it, and there would be some that would, and so we just have to stand up for what's right." Seema Riley, a Muslim, who was born in Pakistan and reared in New York, was one of those upset by the sign. She moved to Rutherford County for the "small town friendly" atmosphere, she said. When she saw the sign on the side of the highway Saturday she felt angered and threatened.

Baptist churches are part of a Christian movement often regarded as an Evangelical Protestant denomination . Baptists emphasize a believer's baptism by full immersion, which is performed after a profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. A congregational governance system gives autonomy to individual local Baptist churches, which are sometimes associated in organizations such as the Southern Baptist Convention . In the late 1990s, there were about 43 million Baptists worldwide with about 33 million in the United States

: Freedom for the Journey "The journey of faith is not a smooth row across a placid lake. It is more like white-water rafting." Phyllis Rodgerson Pleasants guides her readers by examining the as mapped by early Baptists. In an engaging dialogue sprinkled with ideas for readers to ponder, Dr. Pleaseants charts several key freedoms characteristic of Baptists: Freedom to Assemble, Freedom to Study Scripture, Freedom to Follow and Freedom for Religion. She relies upon both ancient Baptist confessions and contemporary Baptist voices to offer a compass for the journey. She concludes with glimpses of the future's horizon. By James Dunn, Wake Forest Divinity School
Visiting Professor of Christianity and Public Policy
Past Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This address was delivered at the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission Annual Conference held on February 12, 2001, at Tarrytown Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. T here is an unbroken chain from the historical and theological starting point for Baptists: soul freedom, to religious liberty for all and its necessary corollary, separation of church and state.      See three concentric circles like the movement in water when a pebble hits a pond. The center circle is the point of impact, representing the experience of one person with the Divine, the central event of one’s life, an Act of God’s Grace, the immediate engagement of heaven with earth: soul freedom.
