82. Religious Freedom, Baptist Perspective
Religious Freedom from the baptist Perspective. By Tony Cupit So, from abaptist perspective what does freedom of religion mean?

Religious Freedom from the Baptist Perspective
By Tony Cupit (This paper was first presented to attendees of the U.N. NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion and Belief, Church Center for the U.N., New York City, October 23, 2003.) Baptists trace their origins to a period and environment of religious persecution in Britain in the early 17 th century and for much of their history Baptists have been, in many parts of the world, a persecuted minority. There is a measure of self interest when Baptists underline the need for freedom of religion. As a historically persecuted people it will be understandable that religious freedom is high on the Baptist agenda. One of the reasons that Baptists engage in international theological conversations with Christian world communions is because we anticipate that by engaging in conversations with sister denominations the difficult situation for our people in countries where they face oppression will be alleviated. So there is a mixture of theology and pragmatism in our approach. freedom to change his or her religion or belief Let me give an illustration. Mother Teresa recently has been beatified by Pope John II in Rome. Indian dignitaries were present and indeed the country which is predominantly Hindu with a large Muslim population genuinely respects and reverences the memory of this saintly Catholic nun. Compare the treatment given to Christian missionary and charity worker Graham Stains, an Australian who spent 34 years serving leprosy victims in the Indian state of Orissa and who with his two sons Philip (10) and Timothy (7), was burnt alive by religious extremists in the country of Mother Teresa. Graham Stains and his sons were denied the right to practice their religion without being subject to coercion and abuse, and indeed death, just a few years ago.

The Lost Baptist Ark
by: Rembert Truluck
I n the climactic scene in the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Indiana Jones and his girlfriend are tied to a pole to watch as the Nazis open the ancient Ark of the Covenant. This holy symbol of Israel's religion has been captured and is being taken as a trophy for Hitler. When the Ark is opened, beautiful light and colors and faces appear then suddenly turn into scenes of horror as shafts of light strike through the onlookers killing them while the faces of those who opened the ark melt and explode! Indiana Jones and his friend survive, because they do not look at the desecration of the Ark. Bapitst Beginnings In 1610 a small group began to meet with John Smyth in London to celebrate their belief in the priesthood of all believers, complete religious freedom for each individual, the separation of church and state, and responsibility of each individual to make his or her own decision about their faith in Jesus Christ. This led to the practice of believers, baptism. Smyth's little group was the first known church that is basically the same in beliefs as modern Baptists, until the falling away from freedom that began at about the same time as the Stonewall rebellion in 1969 in New York. These people were called Baptists. They practiced the same basic beliefs as the Baptists who help to begin the United States of America and who led in the fight for religious freedom for all and the separation of church and state in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights.

" The Jews are a nervous people. Nineteen centuries of Christian love have taken a toll. " Benjamin Disraeli
Southern Baptist prayer guides:
"The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has published a series of prayer guides tied to non-Christian religions and their observances. The guides are intended to assist Baptists to pray for the salvation of all persons through the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to learn about other religions in order to reach their adherents for Christ." The Southern Baptist Convention teaches that personal salvation is only possible through trust and belief in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thus, they believe that followers of other religions are lost. These beliefs motivate them strongly to try to convert "the lost" to a saving knowledge of Jesus. Each of these guides is written about a specific religion. They are generally printed in advance of that religion's major seasonal holy day(s). For example, perhaps the most controversial " prayer guide was designed to help Southern Baptists to pray for the conversion of their Jewish friends and neighbors as the Jews observe Rosh Hashanah.

It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.

Resources > Sermons The Christian American Citizen By J. Brent Walker Matthew 22:17-21, Romans 13:1-5, Acts 4:13-20
These days the public square is not naked; in fact, it is "dressed to the nines." We are one of the most religious and certainly the most religiously diverse nation on this planet!
    I. The scriptures give us some guidance, but no easy answers. Jesus told us to "render unto Caesar, the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's." (Matt. 22:15-22) He affirmed the two kingdoms and our dual allegiance, but he didn't tell us what belonged to whom, did he? He did not say how many taxes to pay to Caesar!
And then we turn to the writings of Paul. In Romans 13 he speaks glowingly of the state. Paul affirms not only allegiance to the state, but he plainly says that the authority of the state is divinely ordained. Civil government is good. God created it to keep order, and to provide for the general welfare. And if Paul's teachings applied to the heavy-handed Roman rule in the first century, how much more should they apply to us living in a robust constitutional democracy. This is the passage we just love to read on the 4th of July.
So we have both of those strains in the Bible. The state is good, but not the ultimate good! And that should not surprise us. The Bible is full of tensions and seeming paradoxes on a variety of scores. These two views of the state also pick up on the theme of "priest" versus "prophet" that we see throughout scripture.
