Banking on Strong Bones
Bones. You probably don't think much about them, unless perhaps you break one. But strong bones are important and now, as a teenager, is the best time for you to build those bones. "Later" May Be Too Late It used to be that information about healthy bones focused on what could be done late in life to prevent osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease that causes the bones to become brittle and fragile, leading to bone fractures and a curved spine. But now, new research shows that the calcium added to bones while you are a teenager is actually the foundation for a lifetime of strong bones. Unfortunately, many teens (especially girls) don't get enough calcium. Teenagers often choose sodas instead of calcium-rich milk, and sodas are double trouble for teen bones. Not only do sodas not contain calcium but research shows that the phosphates in sodas interfere with the body's absorption of any calcium that you DO consume.

    The Geography of
    the Renaissance Class: Social Studies
    Theme(s):
    Background Renaissance Florence
    The artistic, economic and social changes that are associated with the Renaissance first began in the Italian city of Florence. In 1425, Florence was a self-governed, independent city-state with a population of 60,000. Surrounded by land, the city had no sea trade, but artist guilds and banking made Florence a money-making success. Many of Florence's families also built their fortunes on banking. The gold coin of Florence, called the florin, was so consistently pure that it became the standard currency of Europe. Medallion with a portrait of Cosimo de Medici The construction of a dome on top of Florence's cathedral, called the church of Santa Maria del Fiore, marks the beginning of Renaissance architecture. Filippo Brunelleschi received a commission to build the first dome in Florence on a cathedral built in the Gothic style over one hundred years earlier. Brunelleschi went to Rome to study ancient Greek designs and proportions, and he borrowed ideas from what he saw there to create a new architectural marvel - the dome. Brunelleschi's achievement in Florence became a symbol of the Renaissance; blending old Greek designs with modern engineering and artistic ideas to create a new Renaissance style. The Medici family, originally farmers, made their fortune in banking, in Florence, in the beginning of the 15th century. Cosimo de Medici (1389-1464), Florence's wealthiest and most influential citizen, delighted in discussing humanist issues and was extremely generous in his support of scholars and artists such as Brunelleschi. He founded the famous Medici Library and organized the Plato Academy, where intellectuals would gather to discuss ideas concerning the Greek classics. The academy continued even after Cosimo's death.

    http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/parents/lesson_plans/making_money.html
    "Making Money" Estimated Time of Completion: One to two classroom periods. I. Summary:
    For grades 3-7. Students this age should understand the value of money and how to manage it, as well as how to identify ways to make money. A clear delineation of wants and needs helps directs students to set goals and strive for something they may want. II. Objectives:
    • Students will be able to evaluate ways they can earn money.
    • Students will be able to investigate areas of interest and possible jobs.
    • Students will be able to convey their knowledge of making money through a culminating activity.
    III. Materials Needed: IV. Procedure:
  • Use an introductory anticipatory set. Ask the students: “If you could earn some money, what would you save for, and what would like to purchase?” Ask students to write down their answers and have them share with a partner. Next, create a T chart on the board. On one side, list “Wants” and the other, “Needs.” Ask students to share what they would like to purchase and as a group, create a list of wants and needs. Typically, the “Wants” column will be significantly longer than the “Needs.” Delineate for the students the difference between wants and needs. For instance, for this age group, parents take care of the majority of needs.
